Police: Amanda Berry visits Seymour house before Castro sentencing

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CLEVELAND -- On Thursday we may hear some of the first details about what happened inside 2207 Seymour Avenue as Ariel Castro is sentenced for his crimes.

Castro pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, kidnapping, rape and other crimes for a total of 937 charges Friday, agreeing to a minimum sentence of life in prison without parole, plus 1,000 years time.

His sentencing hearing is likely to be a window into what a trial might have looked like, a chance for both sides to present to Judge Michael Russo what they believe are the facts and determining factors in this case.

Read Castro plea agreement

"You have not seen the evidence yet of what took place. We'll make a presentation on that next Thursday," said Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty, in a news conference following the plea hearing.

McGinty says the state will call witnesses to the stand to explain Stockholm Syndrome and other coping mechanisms that allowed the women to survive captivity.

Detectives will also testify on some of the horrors they faced inside.

"He's a manipulator. He has no remorse, and we will elaborate on that at the sentencing," said McGinty.

Castro himself seemed to be searching for a chance to explain Friday.

"My addiction to pornography and my sexual problem has really taken a toll on my mind," he told the court. "I would like to state that I was also a victim as a child and it just kept going," he said, before Judge Russo interrupted him.

"That's certainly something you can bring up at your sentencing hearing," said Russo.

Castro, his family members or other defense witnesses are likely to discuss the alleged abuse and sexual addictions he mentioned out of turn. His victims get that same chance to speak.

But sources close to the family of Gina DeJesus tell us that neither she nor Amanda Berry or Michelle Knight is likely to be in the courtroom.

Prosecutors or a victim's advocate can deliver a statement on behalf of the victims, if they so choose.

An officer on duty on Seymour Avenue told Channel 3 News Amanda Berry visited the house Tuesday afternoon, spending about 15 minutes outside talking to neighbors.

The house is scheduled to be demolished "as soon as possible," according to McGinty, once it's in the hands of the Cuyahoga County Land Bank.

One thing is certain: theree's no set witness list required to be presented to the court before the sentencing begins. Who will or won't be appearing could be changing even throughout the day on Thursday.

Russo expects a long day of evidence from both parties. Channel 3 News will have gavel-to-gavel coverage on air and on wkyc.com beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Blog: Turning the page on the Plain Dealer

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

Between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Wednesday, Plain Dealer journalists will learn if they still have their jobs. Layoffs will reduce the newsroom by about one-third of its staff.

Late Tuesday afternoon, editors, reporters, photographers and other staff were told to wait by their phones Wednesday morning.

That's when they will be told whether to show up for work or not. Harsh? Efficient? Is that any better than getting a pink slip in your paycheck?

Cuts in other departments have already occured. And staffers also learned Monday that more than a dozen more staffers will be added to the original list of cuts.

The loss of newspaper coverage in Northeast Ohio will be felt quickly. The owner of the Plain Dealer -- Advance Publications -- also owns the Sun Newspapers, where (in an effort of full disclosure) I was once a reporter.

I left Sun more than six years ago, right before they began the buyouts and downsizing there.

Sun has gone from 22 editions to 11, closed all of its satellite offices and I am wondering, since my Chagrin Solon Sun is delivered with my Thursday Plain Dealer, what will happen to its delivery because the Plain Dealer isn't making home delivery on Thursdays?

I am still a Plain Dealer subscriber and it will be hard to get used to not stepping outside every single morning while my water boils on the stove for my morning tea. It's a habit, a hard habit to break.

Despite the fact that I am primarily the reporter/producer for WKYC-TV's online website wkyc.com, and read the bulk of my news online, I still like the tactile feel of a newspaper in the morning.

I have been reading the Plain Dealer since I was in grade school and we had it delivered daily to our house. I also remember when the Cleveland Press published its last edition -- June 16, 1982.

That was just over 31 years ago.

Of course, that was long before we had the digital age where you could get your news, weather and sports online. I liked reading both newspapers -- one in the morning and one at night. I also liked the different editorial opinions.

But the loss of the Cleveland Press didn't leave a complete void because we still had the Plain Dealer. And though there will still be a few days of home delivery, it won't be the same.

Now we will become a large city without any daily newspaper and many hard-working journalists will lose their jobs. We always need good journalists to dig for the good stories and bring issues out in the open.

Of course, getting your news online is much faster than waiting for a paper to be delivered. Whether online or in print, we will get the news.

And it's no coincidence that other media -- radio and TV, for example --  have taken their message online long ago as well.

They still maintain their over-the-airwaves products but know full well that the habits of their listeners and viewers have changed from "appointment" TV or radio to "what-I-want-when-I-want-it."

It's just a shame that the Plain Dealer can't remain a seven-day-a-week home delivery for those who want it, instead of just Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The economy was the main reason the Cleveland Press stopped publishing. Advertisers were dwindling.

On the Save the Plain Dealer Facebook page, it was written:  Other newspapers are adopting innovative and far less disruptive strategies that allow them to continue to serve their readers and maintain journalistic excellence while confronting the challenges of the digital era.

That's just not what Advance decided to do. I'll be thinking about the PD staffers Wednesday morning.

Investigator: 'Dead' woman alive, tries to collect cash

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 30 Juli 2013 | 10.49

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

AKRON -- An Akron woman has been trying for 23 years to prove her existence to the government.

But the federal government, through Social Security, keeps telling her she's dead.

Linda Grimm is a retiree who lives in East Akron, where she volunteers as a neighborhood watch captain.

That is impressive, when you consider that she's been dead since 1990, according to Social Security records.

It was that year that she went to open a new account at her local bank, and when the teller called up her file, there was a note attached from Social Security that said she was "deceased."

The bank was told by a federal bureaucrat that Grimm's number belonged to a stranger who had died that same year.

To straighten out the mess, Social Security's Akron office had Grimm spend several hours going through a file that linked her work history with the dead man's.

They wouldn't tell her his name, though, or where he had lived.

Grimm spent three hours filling out forms that should have set the records straight, but didn't.

She did not know that, though, until six years ago, when she applied for widow's benefits from Social Security.

Again, they told her she was dead -- 17 years after she thought the confusion was cleared up.

"I was frustrated, yes," she says. "Upset, yes. Mad, extremely mad."

She filed even more paperwork to attempt to fix this ongoing error.

This month, however, she was told for the third time that she was dead. At this point, she has actually outlived some of the Social Security employees who first worked on her case.

Grimm isn't the first person who has been erroneously declared dead.

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown has worked with a number of constituents who have faced the same mix-up.

A spokesman for Social Security -- from the regional office in Chicago -- admits they dropped the ball and blames the mess on human error.

Dan Nguyen says someone incorrectly keyed in the dead man's Social Security number, making it the same as Grimm's.

Linda Grimm will turn 65 in a couple of months. For her birthday, she wants proof that she's alive -- and perhaps an apology for 23 years of aggravation.

Nguyen says Social Security won't put it in writing, but he passed along apologies on behalf of the government.

Elyria: Human trafficking victims find help in Lorain County

ELYRIA -- Human sex trafficking can and does happen everywhere, and that includes Lorain County.

That's why the Human Trafficking Collaborative of Lorain County started in 2009.

Since then about 40 women, men and children have been rescued and provided services to get their lives back on track.

"Even small Lorain County has the problem and we have some 60 motels in our area and near major highways which can be a problem," says Mindi Kuebler, executive director.

With the FBI announcing a nationwide sting that rescued 105 juveniles over the past three days, it's clear that many children are in danger.

"It's very scary there are more missing children out there, this is the tip of the iceberg," says Kristi Miller from the Human Trafficking Collaborative of Lorain County. These women are working on this project as volunteers.

This Saturday August 3, there is a pancake breakfast at Applebees in Elyria to raise money for the HTCLC from 8am to 10am.

Then from 10:30 to 2:30 they will go to local motels and hand out bars of soap with the national human trafficking hotline to help possible victims.

For help from the HTC of Lorain County you can call, 440-714-1380.

Grand jury indicts Michael Madison for East Cleveland murders

CLEVELAND -- A Cuyahoga County Grand Jury has indicted Michael Madison for the murders of three women whose bodies were found in East Cleveland earlier this month, Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty confirmed.

The Grand Jury charged Madison, 35, with two counts each of Aggravated Murder in the deaths of Shetisha Sheeley, Angela H. Deskins and Shirellda Terry.

The 14-count indictment also included three counts of Kidnapping, three counts of Gross Abuse of a Corpse, one count of Rape and one count of Having Weapons Under Disability.

In a separate case, Madison was also charged with a single felony count of Failure to Provide Notice of Change of Address.

As a convicted sex offender who pleaded guilty in 2002 to Attempted Rape, Madison was required by law to tell the Cuyahoga County Sheriff where he was living and if he moved.

Though listed in the sex offender registry as residing with his mother in Cleveland, Madison has in fact been living in East Cleveland.

Police found the first of the victims on July 19 after answering a complaint about odors coming from an East Cleveland garage. Two more bodies were discovered the following day.

All three were wrapped in plastic bags. Madison was arrested July 19 at his mother's home after a two-hour standoff with police.

On July 22, East Cleveland Municipal Judge William Dawson ordered him held on a $6 million bond, pending the Grand Jury's charging decision.

He is expected to be arraigned in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court this week.

Blog: Anthony Weiner or Cuyahoga County probe?

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

If the Cuyahoga County corruption scandals came out years earlier, before the trials convicted anyone, would you have re-elected or hired any of them?

While sexting led the seven-term Democrat Anthony Weiner to resign from Congress on June 16, 2011, his decision to run for NYC mayor, even as more post-resignation sexting and inappropriate behavior is revealed now, seems unfathomable.

His Congressional resignation came after discussions with his wife Huma Abedin, whom he had married just 11 months earlier. She continues to stand by her man but we are not sure if she is standing by Weiner or his nom-de-Twitter "Carlos Danger."

It is reminiscent of Lori Dimora standing by her man -- former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora -- throughout his two-month trial in 2012.

She was only absent two days and it's quite telling that those two particular days where when the prostitutes were on the witness stand to confirm their "experiences" with Dimora.

If his wife couldn't bear to hear about her husband's unfaithfulness, though certainly not criminal acts, how can NYC voters consider electing a man who was sexting and sending Twitpics of his private parts to women half his age?

How embarrassing, to say the very least, that Weiner now has people dressed as Carlos Danger showing up at his campaign events. It may be funny but I think these latest sexting recipients -- whom Weiner says he will not name -- will come forward.

While Weiner is not accused of steering county contracts to friends who had bribed him with meals, money or home improvements, his moral compass is so far out of whack that I would not want him representing me in any capacity.

The latest cover of The New Yorker magazine has Weiner straddling the tip-top of the Empire State Building while taking a picture of himself with a camera phone. There are helicopters buzzing him ala King Kong. Political cartoons are among my favorites but even thick-skinned politicians have their limits.

If Cuyahoga County voters had found out about then-Commissioner Dimora's dalliances with prostitutes at Stonebridge condominions, on a trip to Windsor Ontario casinos and in Las Vegas, or even his two trysts with Gina Meuti-Coppers, then 38, at the Holiday Inn in Independence, would they have voted for him had there been a re-election bid?

Meuti-Coppers is the daughter of the late Bedford Heights Police Chief Dominic Meuti, who was chief when Dimora was mayor there. Coppers asked Dimora to help get her a job at Bedford Municipal Court, something which she got.

And once Dimora was convicted in July 2012, voters that November voted 67 percent to 33 percent to remove Dimora's name from the Jimmy Dimora Community Center and it is now the Bedford Heights Community Center.

On Saturday, Weiner's campaign manager Danny Kedem, 31, quit after new revelations that Weiner continued to send salacious messages online to women, even after resigning from Congress.

Kedem worked on Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign and he quit Weiner's campaign because it was too much to handle with the sex revelations.

He stayed on a campaign for Hillary despite all of her husband Bill Clinton's White House/Monica Lewinsky baggage so that must tell you how bad Weiner's situation is.

One woman, Sydney Leathers, 23, of Princeton, Indiana -- near Evansville -- appeared on TV and said she was the recipient of sexting messages from the 48-year-old man which later progressed into phone calls where she says they had phone sex.

The Democratic mayoral primary is Sept. 10.  If no candidate gets more than 40 percent of the vote, a runoff will be held Oct. 1.

Forty-three percent of Democratic primary voters say Weiner should quit the race, while 47 percent say he should continue running for mayor, according to the survey released Thursday by NBC 4 New York, The Wall Street Journal and the Marist Instiitute for Public Opinion.

The tumult in Weiner's staff was first reported by The New York Times. Hours later, City Council Speaker and NYC mayoral candidate Christine Quinn repeated criticism on NBC's Meet the Press Sunday morning that Weiner has displayed "reckless behavior" and "immaturity."

Weiner has steadfastly rebuffed calls that he quit the mayor's race, despite calls to resign from top Democratic leaders such as national party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Now I haven't mentioned other Cuyahoga County corruption players who have pleaded guilty or been found guilty but I mentioned Dimora because the FBI always saw him and former Cuyahoga County Auditor Frank Russo as the big fish in the corruption scandal.

Russo entered into a plea deal and then testified in trials against other defendants. Russo was in it for the money -- about $1.5 million -- not the sex but one of the revelations soon after the this all became public was that Russo, who had been divorced from his wife for years, had a gay partner, Michael Calabrese.

Any media that dealt with Russo after his divorce were well aware of Calabrese and that he and Russo lived together. It was never alluded to, even in media coverage.

When the FBI investigation broke, Calabrese was described as housemate, domestic partner, best friend....not once did I see him painted as Russo's gay companion.

Russo himself described Calabrese as "...my partner...my life partner..." while on the witness stand Feb. 15, 2012.

As far as other defendants in the county corruption probe, many pleaded or were found guilty of felonies, something that would keep them from holding office again.

Those defendants who are attorneys themselves face uphill battles when they try and resume working again. And even if the counts are misdemeanors, anyone found guilty or pleading guilty may not be considered a good risk as an employee.

So while damaging revelations may come out after someone is elected to office, it would seem unconscionable for voters who have a normal moral compass to elect someone like Weiner.

It's even more unconscionable that Weiner decided to run for mayor at all. We'll see how the week plays out.

Cleveland: RTA drivers fight human trafficking

CLEVELAND -- The decision came coincidentally, just after Ariel Castro's three women victims were rescued from their captivity and abuse.

RTA chose to become the nation's first transit system to respond to a federal request to combat human trafficking.

RTA spokesperson Mary Shaffer said, "Because we have so many eyes and ears on the street, it may give us a chance to help somebody in need."

So far 1500 workers have taken the voluntary training which includes viewing a video.

The system plans to install placards with the theme "Look below the surface," to alert 200,000 daily commuters what the signs are for trafficking victims in trouble.

The program amounts to an extension of the existing Safe Place campaign. All buses and trains have yellow and black diamond- shaped signs alerting juveniles who are runaways or have problems they can ask the driver to help them get assistance.

Shaffer said, "We have a couple reports a month .... usually a juvenile will go up to a driver and say  'I need help' and we've been able to help them."

The agency is paying for the cost of the placards and training.

Shaffer said helping one person would be worth the modest cost.

Transit Union President William Nix thinks the program makes sense.

Drivers have been concerned about their own security lately with several incidents involving confrontations or incidents with passengers.

But Nix says they want to do all they can to protect the public.

Investigator: Ariel Castro pleads guilty, avoids death penalty

CLEVELAND -- Ariel Castro has accepted a plea deal sparing him execution but putting him behind bars for the rest of his life.

He has pleaded guilty to amended charges and the prosecution and defense have agreed to a recommended sentence of life in prison plus 1,000 years.

"I am fully aware and I do consent to that [plea agreement]," Castro told the court.

The plea deal was accepted in court during a pre-trial hearing before Judge Michael Russo.

The judge said before the hearing started that Castro will be sentenced at a later date.

After avoiding eye contact and remaining silent through the prior court hearings, Castro entered the court today wearing glasses and was alert and talkative to the judge during the hearing. He stared straight ahead and maintained eye contact with Judge Russo.

While answering questions about his understanding of the deal Castro offered details about himself to the judge. Castro made references to his "sex problems."

He also told the judge that he had an addiction to pornography which "took a toll on his mind."

As part of the agreement, Castro will be labeled a sex predator.

Judge Russo told Castro that he will be given the opportunity to allocute at his sentencing hearing and have family members speak on his behalf.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Thursday, August 1.

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight will also have the opportunity to address the court as well at that time if they choose to do so.

Judge Russo says the women can appear in person, have someone speak on their behalf, write a letter or send a video if they choose.

The hearing was interrupted due to clerical errors within the agreement pertaining to the numbering of charges.

Castro pleaded guilty to the charges but said repeatedly he disagreed with the wording.  Specifically, Castro objected to the characterization of him as violent in the description of charges.

He also told the court that he "missed his daughter very much."  He is referring to Amanda Berry's child, fathered while she was held hostage.

In a previous pre-trial, Judge Russo denied Castro's request to see the girl.

As part of the deal, Castro has agreed to turn his home over to the Cuyahoga County Land Bank and Prosecutor Tim McGinty told the court the house would be demolished "and soon."

Castro also forfeits more than $20,000 and other property.  He also agrees not to profit from his crimes.

Castro, who turned 53 earlier this month, faced 977 criminal counts including kidnapping, rape and aggravated murder.

The deal called for him to plead guilty to 937 of them.

His plea also spares his three victims -- Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight -- the trauma of testifying during a trial.

"Overall, the evidence was overwhelming," said Craig Weintraub, one of Castro's defense attorneys. "There are no winners, even though we avoided the death penalty in this case, which was our primary goal.

"My client understood that the last thing he wanted to do was to re-victimize these women."

The case was slated for trial Aug. 5. Castro was initially arrested in May after the three women escaped his Seymour Avenue home where they had been held for a decade.

Earlier this month, the three women released a "thank you" video that took the web by storm as they offered an update on their lives two months after being found alive.

WKYC was the first to deliver the news Thursday that Castro had been offered the plea deal as well as plans already being made to tear down the Seymour Avenue home where the women were held.

NBC News later reported the deal would take the death penalty off the table with Castro accepting a sentence of life without parole plus 1,000 years.

Truckers fighting back against human trafficking

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CLEVELAND -- A nationwide group called Truckers Against Trafficking is getting local support from Northeast Ohio.

The idea is to educate truck drivers, truck-stop workers and motorists how to spot victims of human trafficking.

TravelCenters of America has taken a very public stance against trafficking and that campaign extends to the truck stop in Lodi.

Debbie Shelton is the general manager at the Lodi Travel Center truck stop.

"I have a daughter and I would hope that, if she was in trouble, someone would help her too," says Shelton. The lounges for drivers have information on the red flags of human trafficking.

It's estimated that over 100,000 minors at prostituted in the U.S. every year, and they are trafficked along our highways and truckstops every day.

At Hamrick Trucking School in Medina, students are being made aware of the sex trade as well.

They are on the front line of stopping it and can save someone's life.

"If I see a former student of mine getting into a truck with a prostitute, I will come after you, after I call the police first," says Pat Welsh, Hamrick Trucking instructor.

The National Human Trafficking Resource Center is at 1-888-373-7888. Call if you see suspicious activity.

East Cleveland 'United in Tragedy'

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

EAST CLEVELAND - The families of the East Cleveland victims joined together Wednesday night along with members of the community for a rally aimed at stopping violence against women.

The rally took place near the intersection of Hayden and Shaw avenues where the three women's bodies were discovered.

Dozens of people, community leaders, and elected officials from all over showed up in solidarity for the event and pledged to work together toward change.

"We will take our streets back we will protect our families," shouted minister Tanya Robinson Williams as she addressed the crowd.

"Begin to question suspicious men and women, begin to ask people what are they doing in your neighborhood, begin to not just see but start to look, begin to recognize and make them feel uncomfortable in our neighborhoods."

Now joined together through tragedy, the families of Angela Deskins, Shetisha Sheeley, and Shirellda Terry share a bond only few can understand.

Yvonne Pointer, whose daughter's rape and murder went unsolved for nearly 30 years, offered the following words of consolation.

"I do want the families to know, I'm speaking to you directly now, that your children your loved ones are more than the way they died," said Pointer.

"Remember how they lived think about the good things that they did."

Several community leaders and elected officials also attended charging the crowd to be aware of suspicious activity in the neighborhood and put words into action.

"There's a lot of grief going on right now especially in the African American community and it's important that they see leaders like me standing by their side," said State Sen. Nina Turner.

"Just as a mother and a wife and a sister this pains me...we've had a lot of pain go on through greater Cleveland and it must stop."

It's a growing sense of awareness and community support the loved ones of Shirellda Terry hope will continue. "You don't really realize how many people are missing until it personally affects you and how it really gets tossed to the side," explained Melissa Minor, Shirellda's sister.

"Shirellda was like the match that lit the flames to make the awareness of the people so that change could start," said family friend and pastor Kevin Hannah.  "We want to keep the flame going so that not only is she remembered but other people are saved."

East Cleveland: Rally against violence

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

One by one they came to look in East Cleveland. The same area where the bodies of  Sheetisha Sheeley, Shirellda Terry and Angela Deskins were found.

Volunteers and the community group Black on Black Crime Inc. covered a lot of ground.

The call was for 300 men to join the search. About 30 showed up but the message was still strong.

Leonard Davis volunteered his time and said, "It is my duty as a man to help after these atrocious crimes. I need to get involved."

They searched woods and abandoned homes. The idea was for the volunteers be seen so others would join.

No new victims were found and this group hopes to drive some of the fear out of East Cleveland.

Akron: From child abuse victim to beauty queen

AKRON -- Sharnae Lathan's story is one of hope and resilience.

At 31 years old, the Akron mother has been through more in her life than most people can imagine.  Lathan was sexually abused for years by someone close to her.

While it's taken Lathan nearly her entire life to cope with the abuse she suffered as a child, she's turning that pain into helping others.

As Ohio's representative in the Triumph Over Tragedy: Ms. USA pageant, she has the chance to share her story on a national stage.

"I have nothing better that I could do with my life, than to turn the horrific events that took place in my childhood into a positive way that I can reach out to children," Lathan said.

Lathan says from the time she was four years old, she was abused by someone she knew well.

"I was lost for a long period of time. I experienced repressed memories. Sought therapy," Lathan said.

It took her decades of growing up and facing those memories to realize she was not to blame.

What began as a victory for herself quickly became a fight for others.

"When I'm at my weakest, I go do something for someone else," she said.

With her Akron-based organization, Through A Child's Eyes: Who Cares, Lathan now speaks in schools and churches and community meetings, to parents and kids.

"I have one simple message: No Secrets," she says of her effort to teach children that abuse is not something to keep to themselves.

This message won her the title of Triumph Over Tragedy: Ms. Ohio 2013.

The pageant promotes self confidence and social awareness.

In short, beauty within.

"Without these experiences that I've had, I would not be able to reach the children that I do," Lathan said of her program.

This weekend, she'll compete in the Triumph Over Tragedy national pageant.

Her goal is to become a national spokesperson for awareness of child sexual abuse.

Lathan says, after all she's been through, she already feels like a winner.

"The day I said I was a victim and now I'm a survivor--that's the most important title I could ever have," Lathan said.

Russo brothers: Cleveland natives who love their hometown

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 24 Juli 2013 | 10.49

A unique letter showed up in my WKYC station mailbox.

It would not be unusual for someone to send information on a family member's accomplishment, however, this came from the parents of two Hollywood directors talking about their sons -- Joe and Anthony Russo.

What I found endearing was the fact that these two Cleveland natives were directing "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" in their hometown.

Although they are backed by a major Hollywood studio with a public relations department, it was their mother and father who made sure WKYC knew the background on their careers.

There was no bragging.  It was information to help with any coverage the Hollywood production was sure to get in Cleveland.

Their accomplishments are extensive.

The Russo brothers won an Emmy for directing the pilot of "Arrested Development." They added to their respected reputations by directing the pilot episodes of "Community," "Happy Endings" and "Lucky."

Their love for Cleveland is so deep that the Russos have now filmed three of their four movies here.

The last day of filming for Captain America wrapped at 3:30 a.m. here in Cleveland. Anthony Russo was on a plane back to los Angeles within a couple of hours to oversee shooting.

Although there were plans for a family dinner, Joe Russo agreed to an interview.

We sat in his sister's backyard while his daughter played with her cousins who live in Cleveland. Hollywood has not jaded nor deeply altered the Russos. Their love of Cleveland firmly intact.

"We can't thank Clevelanders enough for their support," said Joe Russo. "It was the best experience I ever had filming outside of Los Angeles."

Bringing jobs to Cleveland is a priority for the brothers.

"It's the greatest feeling walking down the street when someone walks up and shakes your hand and says thank you for being here and working here," he said.

The directors were well aware that filming had its critics, especially when it came to the West Shoreway shutdown. They hope that -- long term -- the positives of having a local production outweighed the inconveniences.

The filming pumped at least $40 million into the local economy, providing paychecks to hundreds of crew members and thousands of extras.

Hotels, restaurants, bars, rental car agencies and local businesses all got a boost.

The Russos not only direct but also write and produce. Their ultimate goal is to bring more production to Cleveland. The pair has already written television and movie scripts based in Cleveland.

"At the end of the day, I love this town. My brother and I are sons of Cleveland. It's been a dream of ours to get production here," said Joe.

Police: Baby's body found in car trunk at repair shop

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

SHELBY -- A mechanic finds a baby's body in a box in the trunk of a car left for several days at a repair shop.

Police now tell WKYC that a 17-year-old girl has admitted having the baby in January or February. No word on the official cause of death.

The teen told police she put the baby in the box and put it in the car. She had been driving around with it in the car ever since.

The body was discovered in a car at Broadway Auto and Exhaust, at 211 N. Gamble Street.

As the mechanic worked on the car Tuesday, he smelled an odor. He investigated the cause of the odor, got into the trunk and found a box.

He set the box aside while trying to see if an animal had gotten into the trunk. He then realized that the odor was coming from the box.

As he was taking the box to the curb to dispose of it, he opened it and saw that it was not, in fact, an animal, but a baby.

Police were called at 2 p.m. Police have identified the owner of the vehicle and established that the 17-year-old drives the car regularly.

The Richland County Coroner's office is on the scene and the Bureau of Criminal Identification is enroute at 4 p.m.

East Cleveland: 1 of 3 victims identified; bond $6M

CLEVELAND -- One of three women found over the weekend wrapped in plastic has been identified. Charges have now been filed against Michael Madison, 35, in connection with the deaths.

PHOTOS | East Cleveland triple murder

East Cleveland's Mayor Gary Norton announced that the second victim found has been identified as Angela Deskins, 38, of Cleveland.

She had been reported missing June 7 and is listed on the Cleveland Police missing persons website.

Michael Madison is charged with aggravated murder and kidnapping in the deaths of Deskins and the two other victims.  He was arraigned Monday morning on the charges following a news conference with authorities.

Bond for Madison is set at $6 million. He did not enter a plea.

Earlier Monday, police exclusively told WKYC that Madison confessed to one of the murders.

The first body was discovered Friday in a garage at Shaw and Hayden, the two others were found Saturday.  Each body had been wrapped in plastic garbage bags.

Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson  says each body was in advanced stages of decomposition. Gilson says all the autopsies have been completed but cause of death hasn't been determined.

Fingerprints were used to identify Angela Deskins.

Dr. Gilson says one of the victims had a number of tattoos.  Anyone with information on the possible identity of the victims should call 1-800-CALL-FBI.

Madison is a registered sex offender. Police say Madison has been cooperative.

East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton says Madison indicated he might have been influenced by the earlier case of convicted Cleveland serial killer, Anthony Sowell

The Facts

People of East Cleveland are shocked after three bodies were discovered wrapped in plastic. The first was discovered Friday, followed by two more Saturday.

On Sunday, volunteers from the neighborhood were told to expect to find more remains in the area of Shaw and Hayden avenues.

Community members, alongside police, searched over 12 streets and roughly 50 abandoned homes for evidence of more victims that may be part of a serial killing spree.

During the search, cadaver dogs led investigators to a lot near the area where 2 other bodies were found. Other cadaver dogs also hinted at the same area.

Three crime scene trucks and an evidence recovery team were brought in to check the lot. Evidence technicians analyzed the area for hours but nothing turned up.

The search was called off Sunday night.

Investigator: Michael Madison's family says he is "not a killer"

Michael Madison is being described by people who know him as a sweet guy -- as someone not capable of killing another human being.

But he is the same man who police said in a 2001 report choked a woman, demanded sex and tried to rape her.

Michael Madison was convicted of trying to rape an 18-year-old woman in the back of an apartment building on Marloes Avenue in East Cleveland, just down the street from the police station.

She said he choked her, threatened to kill her if she screamed, and then tried to rape her.

Neighbors heard her screams in the pre-dawn hours and called police, who interrupted the attempted rape.

Madison's uncle, former East Cleveland Councilman Otis Mays, says that he didn't believe the charges back then. Madison and Mays lived together at that time.

He also doesn't believe the murder rap now. "I'm saying he's not capable of doing anything like that," Mays said, referring to the murders. "Not capable."

Mays, who was himself arrested for paying a homeless man to give him oral sex six years ago, was shocked to hear his nephew was charged with murder.

"I still don't believe it, I mean, that's not his demeanor," Mays said. "He's a more quiet, tranquil person."

Madison's criminal history goes back to 2000 when he was busted on charges that he peddled cocaine. He was convicted only of drug possession and did time at the Lorain Correctional Institution.

Kimberly Ferguson, a friend of Madison's, says that the man she called Ivan was like a big brother to her.

"He was always there when I needed him," she said. "I mean, he never came off nasty, he never came off weird."

"Ivan was a sweet person."

Blog: East Cleveland suspect the next Anthony Sowell?

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 22 Juli 2013 | 10.49

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

Just when you thought that convicted Cleveland serial killer Anthony Sowell was becoming an incident in Cleveland's past, his name pops up again in a search for bodies in East Cleveland.

East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton told the Associated Press Sunday that the suspect in 3 murders may have been influenced by Anthony Sowell.

To bring you up to speed, neighbors in the Shaw/Hayden avenues area in East Cleveland reported a foul odor Friday and police discovered a woman's body in a garbage bag in a garage. That led to a standoff a few hours later in Cleveland (near the City of Euclid border) on Chickasaw Avenue where convicted sex offender Michael Madison, 35, eventually surrendered.

Interviews with Madison and "lots of reasons" from what he said brought police back to East Cleveland Saturday, where they found two more bodies in garbage bags --- one in a backyard, the other in the basement of an abandoned home. The search continued Sunday.

Sowell's bodies were also wrapped in garbage bags.

Norton wasn't specific about what kind of "influence" Sowell may have had or what was referenced in the interviews. "He said some things that led us to believe that in some way, shape, or form, Sowell might be an influence," Norton also told The Associated Press.

Norton also said all of the bodies found were black women killed within the last 6-10 days.

On Oct. 31, 2009, Sowell was arrested after a woman escaped from his Imperial Avenue house weeks earlier and said she had been raped there. On Oct. 29-30, 2009, police found the mostly nude bodies of 11 women in garbage bags and plastic sheets throughout the home.

Two bodies were found in the living room, four other women were found throughout the home, buried in a shallow grave in the basement and in crawl spaces in the house.

After digging in the backyard, investigators found three more bodies and the remains of a fourth. Police also found a human skull in a bucket inside the house, which brought the body count to 11.

Sowell, now 53, was found guilty two years ago this Monday in 2011 -- July 22, 2011 -- and sentenced to death. He is appealing his sentence, saying he didn't get a fair trial because of extensive media coverage.

They are holding Madison as a suspect in all three murders but have yet to charge Madison formally.

The body count may rise but it still baffles me that anyone would be influenced by a serial killer except another wannabe. Now who in their right mind aspires to be a serial killer? Oh yeah, they aren't in their right mind. Very sad.

East Cleveland: 3 bodies found, search continues

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CLEVELAND -- Police called off search efforts for the evening in the area of Shaw and Hayden avenues for additional victims.

Community members, alongside police, searched over 12 streets and roughly 50 abandoned homes Sunday for evidence of more victims that may be part of a serial killing spree.

During the search, a cadaver dog lead investigators to a lot near the area where 3 other bodies were found. Other cadaver dogs also hinted at the same area.

Three crime scene trucks and an evidence recovery team were brought in to check the lot. Evidence technicians analyzed the area for hours but nothing turned up.

Afterwards, police called off the search for the night.

They are expected to hold a press conference Monday at 11 a.m.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty was also at the crime scene Sunday evening.

On Sunday, Police Chief  Ralph Spotts, told neighbors and media they think one to two more bodies maybe in the East Cleveland neighborhood.

Two dozen residents are combed the area where the first three women were found.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiners Office says it may take up to several days as they work to identify the women found. The condition of the bodies are in an advanced decomposition state.

On Saturday, police located two bodies, bringing the total up to three homicides in two days.

Investigators have expanded the blocked off the area and detectives are on the scene searching abandoned homes.

East Cleveland Police say that the cases are related. All three victims are female and were found in garbage bags.

One of the women had on a leotard top. The other woman had on a green sweatshirt/jacket and a green and pink orchid tattoo on her thigh.

Police believe the women were killed within the last six to ten days.

Police added that one of the women was found 150 feet from a garage in a field covered by a bush. The other woman was thrown through a window into an abandoned home's basement.

On Friday, police say they were involved in a standoff with a suspect in the homicide of one female found in an East Cleveland garage.

The standoff was at Chickasaw Avenue and East 197th Street near the City of Euclid border around 4:30 p.m.

A police negotiator was seen on a bullhorn kept asking a man named "Michael" to come out of a home on Chickasaw Avenue.

Police arrested Michael Madison, 35.

Earlier Friday, East Cleveland detectives found a decomposing body inside a garage on Shaw and Hayden avenues.

Related story: East Cleveland: Body found in garage

Police used warrants to search the garage and the apartment across the alley, both of which are rented by Madison.

A car which he had access to was also towed from the scene.

A bystander at Sunday's search scene who knew Michael Madison says he knew him as Ivan Carter. Police haven't confirmed whether or not Madison has any known aliases.

The same bystander also says it seems as if Madison always "had something on his mind," but appeared to still be a normal guy.

The FBI, BCI and Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's office is also assisting East Cleveland Police with the investigation.

It's possible that Madison may face criminal charges as early as Monday morning.

Pepper Pike: Tornado damages homes, trees, buildings

PEPPER PIKE -- Neighbors who woke up this morning in Pepper Pike began counting the signs of damage to yards and homes.

On several streets near Lander Road, trees are split or bent in the direction the wind blew.

The National Weather Service confirms a high-end EF1 tornado, up to 200 yards wide, blew a path 1.3 miles from Ursuline College to residential streets.

The college was hardest hit. The gymnasium wall was ripped off in the 110 mph winds.

The science center and college library were damaged, too.

About four or five people were on campus at the time. On Friday afternoon, the college was full of summer campers earlier in the day.

"Nobody was injured. Nobody was hurt. We feel great blessings for that. God was looking out for us," said Sister Diana Stano, President of Ursuline College.

Much of the lush landscaping and age-old trees surrounding the pond on the campus were destroyed in the tornado's path.

"I've been president for 17 years and I've never seen damage like this," Sister Diana said.

Less than a mile away, neighbors on Plymouth Road spent the day counting blessings, too.

Large trees in Lorie Hollington Smith and Katie Outcalt's yards are littered about like twigs.

The first hole of The Country Club is covered in debris as well. Some power lines on Plymouth were brought down in the storm, but no one in the area was injured.

"A lot of really close calls," said Hollington Smith.

The winds sent one branch straight through the dining room wall of Lorie's home. Both women said, another five feet over, and the trees could have landed on bedrooms where parents and children were sleeping.

On Saturday, neighbors found what appeared to be pieces of insulation from Ursuline buildings in their yards.

"I think it picked up a prayer at Ursuline and put a bubble over our houses, because if you look how close these huge trees are to our homes. It's a miracle," said Outcalt.

CLEVELAND -- Police say they have ended the standoff with the suspect in the homicide of the person found in an East Cleveland garage earlier today.

Police tell Channel 3's AJ Ross that the standoff was at Chickasaw Avenue and East 197th Street near the City of Euclid border.

She says police say Euclid police got a call to assist around 4:30 p.m. and a police negotiator on a bullhorn kept asking a man named "Michael" to come out of a home on Chickasaw Avenue.

Police arrested Michael Madison, 35.

About noon Friday, East Cleveland detectives found a decomposing body inside a garage on Shaw and Hayden avenues.

Related story: East Cleveland: Body found in garage

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner has not yet identified the person because the body was badly decomposed. They do know the body was of smaller stature, possibly a female.

Police used warrants to search the garage and the apartment across the alley, both of which are rented by Madison.

A car which he had access to was also towed from the scene.

EXCLUSIVE: Aliza Sherman's brother says her killer will be caught

CLEVELAND -- Edward Czinn remembers his sister Aliza Sherman like many others: warm, humble, with a way of caring for everyone in the world around her.

She was a mother of four, and lover of all children, working as an in vitro fertilization nurse at the Cleveland Clinic.

Her death was a viciously sharp contrast from her life.

"I know Aliza would want us to keep the pressure on," he said. "I don't think she would want the person or persons that are responsible for this to be able to walk away from this without consequences."

March 24, a sunny Sunday afternoon, Sherman never made it to her divorce attorney's office. As she walked from her car, she was stabbed 11 times.

Cleveland Police say they have no suspects or persons of interest.

Aliza was scheduled for a trial just two days later.

Sources tell us her estranged husband Sanford Sherman was among several people questioned after her death.  He has hired a prominent criminal defense attorney, Nikki Schwartz.

Cleveland Police say although they have no suspects they are actively working leads and will not let the case go cold.

Who's responsible for her death? Czinn says someone knows.

"This was obviously well planned out, and we know that there are people out there that have information. I think that at this point, for any number of reasons, they don't want to come forward or are afraid to come forward," he said.

"We're confident that will eventually happen. There are enough people out there that have an interest in this case that its really only a matter of time."

Her supporters are in the thousands on Facebook, where Justice for Aliza, a campaign started by friends and family has organized events in her honor.

The next, a self-defense class for women, is scheduled for July 28th at noon at the Beachwood Community Center.

They've contributed $25,000 to a CrimeStoppers reward for information that leads to an arrest. You can contact them anonymously with any tips.

Blog: Will bankrupt Detroit sell 'Howdy Doody' for cash?

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

The City of Detroit filed for bankruptcy Thursday afternoon, becoming the nation's largest public sector bankruptcy and citing $18 billion in liabilities.

One of the ideas to get some ready cash to pay down the debt is for the museum of the Detroit Institute of Arts, to sell one of its prized possessions -- the original Howdy Doody marionette.

Howdy Doody was the star of his own 1950s-era children's show. It was acquired in 2001, according to the DIA's director of communications, and puppt experts say it could fetch $400,000 to $500,000 at auction.

Howdy Doody was created in the image of a freckled-face boy dressed in cowboy attire. "The Howdy Doody Show" ran on NBC from 1947 to 1960.

One of Muppet creator Jim Henson's Kermit the Frog puppets is also among the DIA's 800-piece puppet collection.

Now an opinion from the state's attorney general says the city can't sell Howdy, but he could still end up being sold, along with many of the other 60,000 DIA items.

The DIA was founded in 1885 and houses more than 100 galleries, a lecture and recital hall, an art reference library, and a state-of-the-art conservation laboratory, according to the museum's website.

DIA's collection is one of the finest in North American and when Detroit's emergency manager, Kevyn Orr, asked for an inventory of holdings, it set off alarm bells among residents.

I mean, it will come down to what the federal bankruptcy court decides is expendable to satisfy the debt.

Also, know that all of the city's creditors have asked about the DIA and whether it has been valued and some creditors have said everything that isn't nailed down should be sold to pay them.

Yikes.

Human actor Buffalo Bob Smith, a native of Buffalo, New York, died in 1998. There was also the mute Clarabell the Clown, who communicated by honking horns on his belt and squirting seltzer. He was first played by Bob Keeshan, who went on to play Captain Kangaroo.

And Chief Thunderthud, head of the Ooragnak -- kangaroo spelled backwards -- tribe of Native Americans and Princess Summerfallwinterspring.

But what will happen will happen and what I really want to know is where Heidi Doody -- Howdy's sister -- and Mayor Phineas T. Bluster, Dilly Dally, Inspector John J. Fadoozle, Sandra the Witch, Capt. Windy Scuttlebutt and Flub-a-Dub are.

First baby born on Put-In-Bay in 34 years

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 18 Juli 2013 | 10.49

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

SOUTH BASS ISLAND --  Crossing Lake Erie is the only way to get to Put-In-Bay, but on June 1, two midwives hopped into a boat and did something that hasn't been done here in 34 years.

"Having a baby born on the island is not the normal thing to do since there's no hospitals nearby," says Dustin Heineman, the new father.

Heineman Winery is the oldest, family owned winery in Ohio, celebrating 125 years this year. Eli Edward Hayes Heineman, vintage 2013, has a legacy to learn.

"He will learn it from the ground up, just like I have," his father says.

Mom Kira Hubner grew up on the island. It was her decision to have the baby here.

"My heart wants to be here on Put-In-Bay," Hubner says.

Escape plans were in place but the two midwives from the mainland delivered the baby without a problem.

"it was more than perfect. There was a beautiful rainbow the second he was born," Kira says.

She also understands the impact the birth has on the Heineman name.

"it couldn't have happened to a better family, if we're going to start something like this, you know a legacy," she says.

As the 6th generation Heineman, wine will definitely be part of his life.

"When he was in-utero, I was out in the vineyard picking grapes and in the spring I was tying vines, so hopefully, something is flowing through his veins," she says.

Investigator: Convicted murderer seeks to clear name

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CLEVELAND-- Anthony Lemons was paroled last December for a murder he says he didn't commit.  The Investigator Tom Meyer uncovered highly questionable evidence to support his claim.

Now that Lemons is out of prison, he's trying to clear his name and has asked for a new trial.  Judge Janet Burnside says she is considering his request and is working toward making a ruling, but can't say when that will happen.

Lemons is trying to put his life back together.  He's reconnecting with his family, including a daughter who grew up while Lemons was in prison.

He wants a more productive job than he has now which is cleaning machinery that hardens iron ore into steel.  But it doesn't help that he must state he's a convicted felon on job applications.

"I'm free, but I'm not free because this is hanging over my head," Lemons said.

Lemons is also dealing with his past.  He was 22 when he was found guilty of killing Eric Sims, whose bullet-riddled body was found at the Cliffview Apartments in Cleveland. He was convicted on the testimony of a crack-using prostitute, June Adamchick, who is now dead.

Lemons says prosecutors withheld key evidence  which included Adamchick's failure to identify Lemons during a line-up.  A juror on Lemons' case told the Investigator Tom Meyer she wasn't sure if Lemons committed the crime.

As Lemons awaits the judge's decision on a new trial, he is talking with juvenile inmates telling them a life of crime is no life at all.

"Stop wasting your life.  Life is not a game.  It's short," Lemons tells the inmates.

Lemons hopes for a new trial and for an outcome that will declare his innocence.  He is determined to lead the life he envisioned before he was locked up for murder.

Cleveland: Trayvon Martin rally draws peaceful crowd

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CLEVELAND -- The outrage and frustration over the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin shooting in Florida reached the streets of downtown Cleveland.

Monday afternoon, a crowd of about 150 protesters  demonstrated and heard a series of brief remarks from speakers, touching on the subjects of injustice, racism, equality, gun violence and respect.

Some wore hoodies. Many brandished and later threw Skittles in a show of solidarity with Trayvon Martin.

The crowd included many familiar faces at such protests. However, some were not regulars, but rather young men and women troubled by Trayvon's killing and Zimmerman's jury acquittal.

Charless Craggett, a 21-year-old college student from Cleveland, said he was often racially profiled.

"It's scary. It's something I deal with every day. I understand how Trayvon may have felt that night," he said.

He said he came to the rally to try to prevent more injustices.

NAACP member Ivan Williams urged the crowd to start greeting people by saying, " I respect you."

Some speakers connected the case to the still unresolved question of whether there will be criminal charged in the deadly Cleveland police shootings of two unarmed suspects following a citywide chase in November.

They urged the crowd to return if a grand jury fails to bring charges.

There were some tense pre-rally moment as protesters exchanged words with observers who accused them of trying to start trouble.

Sheriff's deputies watched the peaceful rally, which ended with a shower of Skittles thrown on the Justice Center steps.
