WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has been admitted to a New York hospital after the discovery of a blood clot stemming from the concussion she sustained earlier this month.

Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines says her doctors discovered the clot during a follow-up exam Sunday. Reines says Clinton is being treated with anti-coagulants.

Clinton was admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital so doctors can monitor the medication over the next 48 hours.

Reines says doctors will continue to assess Clinton's condition, "including other issues associated with her concussion."

Report: Browns expected to fire head coach and GM

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

PITTSBURGH -- The Browns are expected to fire Head Coach Pat Shurmur and General Manager Tom Heckert.

In a postgame press conference following a 24-10 loss to the Steelers, Shurmur had this to say about his job status:

"I'm looking forward to this team next year if that's the case.  If not, then what I'm going to do is help coach and help inspire a team to win games in some role. I have kids in college, I have mouths to feed - and this is my profession and this is what I choose to do. That's it. That is how simple it is in my mind."

The players have a meeting scheduled for Monday morning in Berea at the team's headquarters.  Afterwards, the locker room is open to the media at 10:30am.

Shurmur is scheduled to address the media at 11:30am in Berea.

In two seasons, Shurmur has an overall record of 9-23 including a mark of 2-10 against divisional opponents.

Jim Donovan reports a strong candidate to replace Shurmur is Indianapolis Colts Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians.

Arians has guided the Colts' offense and rookie quarterback Andrew Luck into the playoffs. He was also offensive coordinator with the Browns during the Butch Davis era.

Donovan also says another candidate is Arizona Cardinals Defensive Coordinator Ray Horton. Horton has been an NFL assistant coach for 18 years, including a stop with the Steelers during 2004-2010.

Autistic man discovers passion, success in painting

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 30 Desember 2012 | 10.49

WKYC Web Staff

A local man has overcome many obstacles in his life to become an accomplished artist, using his paintbrush to communicate with others.

"My son is just the most wonderful being in the world. His name is Seth, he's 28 and he's an artist," says his mother.

It was discovered that Seth was autistic around the age of two. He was sunny, he was happy, and he didn't talk.

When he was 12, his mother understood that he was not going to wake up and start speaking. Part of it was heartbreaking and part of it was liberating.

At age 18, Seth had a formal evaluation. He has an IQ of around 148 and doctors suggested dry-mopping but his mother decided to go with passion instead.

Seth took his first art class at 20 and hit the ground running. At 23, he was on The Today Show and his artwork is displayed all over the world.

When Seth paints, he is happy. He says his paintings can make people all better.

Flying high: Akron-Canton airport breaks record

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 29 Desember 2012 | 10.49

NORTH CANTON -- The deals are always flying by at Akron Canton Airport. Now more than ever, people are taking notice.

For the past three years, they've continued to break their own records on the amount of customers serviced.  Business is up 11 percent from last year.

Cleveland native Jennifer Johnson flies CAK.

"It's smaller but you can get through everything a lot quicker than Cleveland Hopkins," said Johnson. "Once AirTran started docking its station ,that's when I started going."

Turns out, a lot of people are getting to where they want to go from Akron Canton.

The 11 percent increase in traffic is greatly attributed to their low fares.

"Our average fare is $100 less than Hopkins, maybe $40 to $50 less than from Pittsburgh or Columbus," said VP of Marketing Kristie VanAuken.

For passenger Bradley Lemmon, it's all about convenience.

"This is closer, shorter drive... we walked all the way in, checked our bags ready for our flight," said Lemmon.

This year, about 1.8 million customers have flown in and out. Their traffic alone has sustained and created jobs throughout the hub.

For instance, Southwest Airlines "jumped from about 40 employees to 75, so nearly a 100 percent increase for people for Southwest Airlines here," VanAuken said.

President Obama calls for immediate action on fiscal cliff

Written by
Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama says "the hour for immediate action is here" on a deal to avert the fiscal cliff.

The president says he remains "optimistic" that an agreement can be reached in Congress before a looming year-end deadline to avoid tax increases and spending cuts.

If Congress can't reach a deal, the president says Congress should allow a vote on a basic package that would preserve tax cuts for middle-class Americans while extending unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless and working toward a foundation for a broader deal.

The president says an hourlong meeting Friday with congressional leaders was "good and constructive."

Senate leaders say they hope to reach a compromise that could be presented to lawmakers by Sunday, little more than 24 hours before the deadline.

No new details released in deadly police shooting investigation

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 28 Desember 2012 | 10.49

WKYC Web Staff

Photo from the night of the police-involved shooting in which two people were killed.

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath says he's hopeful a review of the fatal police-involved shootings on Nov. 29 will be complete by the end of January.

Their goal is to determine if the 13 officers involved in the incident acted in accordance with policies when they used deadly force against 43-year-old Timothy Russell and 30-year-old Malissa Williams.  The two were killed when officers fired 137 total rounds at the vehicle they were in following a pursuit that lasted more than 20 minutes.

A national organization called the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) reviewed Cleveland Police policies about the use of deadly force. According the Chief McGrath, the agency determined that Cleveland police policies are "sound and comprehensive."

Mayor Frank Jackson says if the officers are found to have acted "outside parameters that we have set, then there will be consequences." Those consequences were not defined.

If the review determines the use of deadly force was within the parameters, "we will support them and they will be protected."

Jackson also says he wants the investigation to remain transparent because it's important to keep the trust of the public, officers and the police department.

City leaders did not release information about gun residue tests. Those tests could determine if either of the suspects fired a weapon. They also did not comment on any details of the investigation. Police have said that no gun nor shell casings were found in the suspect vehicle.

AP source: Retired Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf dies

Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- A U.S. official says retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, who commanded the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait in 1991, has died. He was 78.

The official tells The Associated Press that Schwarzkopf died Thursday in Tampa, Fla. The official wasn't authorized to release the information publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

A much-decorated combat soldier in Vietnam, Schwarzkopf was known popularly as "Stormin' Norman" for a notoriously explosive temper.

He lived in retirement in Tampa, where he had served in his last military assignment as commander-in-chief of U.S. Central Command. That is the headquarters responsible for U.S. military and security concerns in nearly 20 countries from the eastern Mediterranean and Africa to Pakistan.

Cleveland Weather: Winding down

First came the blizzard and winter storm warnings from the National Weather Service office in Cleveland.  Those were canceled when the severe conditions subsided early, but in their place a winter weather advisory was issued.

The winter weather advisory has been canceled, too...well, most of it.

The winter weather advisory will continue for the lakeshore areas of Ashtabula county...only.

We still have scattered snow showers and flurries around much of northern Ohio for tonight.  Not expecting accumulations...maybe an inch or so.

It has been a big day of snow and brisk wind for northern Ohio.

Anywhere from 3" to 8" of snow have been reported.

By the time Thursday morning rolls around, total accumulations will range from 4" to 8" (with a couple spots possibly reaching toward 10") across northern Ohio.

The wind will remain brisk, and blowing snow will continue to be a problem for local roadways.

Looking ahead, we'll have lingering snow showers into Thursday.  It will still be breezy with wind chills in the teens and low 20s.

Tonight:  Scattered snow showers and flurries, otherwise mainly cloudy skies.  Another inch or so of accumulation is possible if some snow showers persist.  Breezy.  Mid/upper 20s

Thursday:  Mostly cloudy with scattered light snow showers and flurries.  If we can get some persistent snow showers to form, we could have another couple inches of snow in some isolated areas.  Breezy.  Near 30

Friday:  Partly sunny.  Upper 20s/low 30s

Saturday:  Mostly cloudy with scattered snow.  Low 30s

Sunday:  Early flurries, otherwise partly sunny.  Low 30s

Monday:  Partly sunny.  Near 30

Tuesday (Happy New Year!):  Mostly cloudy with scattered snow.  Upper 20s

Wednesday:  Mostly cloudy with scattered snow.  Upper 20s

Cleveland Weather: Wicked Wednesday

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 26 Desember 2012 | 10.49

Merry Christmas!

Tonight's weather is the easiest part...

We'll have cloudy skies and nearly steady temperatures in the low 30s.  Wind will be increasing through the night to 10-15 mph from the northeast.

A BLIZZARD WARNING has been issued for:  Lakeshore Ashtabula, Lake, Cuyahoga, Lorain, Erie, Huron, Sandusky and Ottawa counties from 11AM Wednesday to 7AM Thursday.  (Blizzard warning criteria are: wind greater than 35mph and visibility less than 1/4 mile for 3 or more hours.)

A WINTER STORM WARNING goes into effect for the rest of northern Ohio from 7AM Wednesday to 7AM Thursday.

PLEASE - Don't get caught up in the technicalities of a blizzard warning versus a winter storm warning. ALL of northern Ohio will have a nasty day Wednesday.  The wind will be a little higher in the blizzard warning areas and visibilities may be consistently lower, but we will have very tough driving conditions across all of our counties.

Here is the set-up:  A powerful winter storm system will move from the deep south to the New England/Mid-Atlantic coast.  As the storm moves northeast, a swath of very heavy snow will move into northern Ohio from the south.  It will also be quite windy.

The snow will start across northern Ohio by midday Wednesday.  A steady moderate to heavy snow will persist through the afternoon with very heavy, steady snow continuing in the late afternoon through evening.

When combined with the brisk wind, blizzard conditions are possible in all areas, but most likely in the blizzard warning area.

6" to 10" of snow will fall across ALL of northern Ohio through the day and evening.  An additional 2" to 5" will fall Wednesday night before the snow cuts down to light showers and flurries early Thursday morning.

Storm totals by midday Thursday will be 8" to 12" with the possibility of up to 15" of snow.

This will be a constantly evolving situation.

Things to remember:

- The snow will be wet and heavy, so use caution if shoveling.

- Driving will be extremely difficult.

-If driving south along I-71, expect heavy snow the entire drive through Cincinnati.

-If driving west on I-80/90, expect heavy snow showers in much of northern Ohio...tapering off to flurries and light snow in Indiana and Michigan.

-If driving south on I-77 or east on I-80/76, expect snow to change over to a wintry mix.

-If driving east on I-90 toward Buffalo, expect snow, but leaving earlier rather than later is a good idea.

- The airports will have problems with arrivals and departures.  So will other regional airports in Columbus and Pittsburgh.

-Bring in the pets and secure outdoor buildings and items.

-Consider telling your kids to wear bike helmets while sledding, tubing and/or skiing or snowboarding.

Here is a look at the rest of the forecast:

Thursday:  Scattered light snow showers.  Breezy.  Near 30

Friday:  Partly sunny.  Near 30

Saturday:  Mostly cloudy with snow likely.  Low 30s

Sunday:  Early snow showers linger, then partly cloudy.  Near 30

Monday:  Partly cloudy early, then scattered snow later.  Upper 30s

New Year's Day:  Mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers.  Upper 20s

Burton: Multiple fire departments battle house fire

Written by
Associated Press

BURTON -- Crews from multiple fire departments have been called to a structure fire on Park Way.

The fire started just after 8:30 p.m. It's not clear whether the home was occupied or not.

Due to the location of the structure, fire crews are having a hard time getting water and equipment close enough to battle the blaze.

Fire crews from as far away as Streetsboro have been called to help.

Some of the other departments on scene are Burton, Chardon, Middlefield, Troy Township, Aurora, Auburn and Chagrin Falls.

Route 87 has been closed in both directions until fire crews clear the area.

Malls packed with last-minute holiday shoppers

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

STRONGSVILLE -- On the final weekend of shopping before Christmas, crowds continue to grow and stores are packed.

Some people say shopping at the last minute is actually a strategic decision. They say you're still able to get good deals, and it's nothing like the crowds you see on Black Friday.

Shoppers are crowding more than just storefronts. Roads in the area surrounding the mall have been gridlocked with people trying to get in and out of the stores nearby.

Southpark Mall has extended hours and will remain open until 11 p.m. Some department stores, including Macy's, will stay open through the night to give shoppers a chance to find the perfect gift.

Other stores are open for longer periods of time. Toys R Us will stay open for 88 hours straight, closing its doors at 10:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Investigator: Sinking sidewalks downtown repaired

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 21 Desember 2012 | 10.49

CLEVELAND -- The city of Cleveland is making major repairs to Euclid Avenue, two months after a Channel 3 News investigation found hazardous sidewalks that caused injuries to pedestrians.

These are the same sidewalks that were part of a $23 million reconstruction completed only four years ago.

Repairs are also underway around catch basins on Euclid Avenue, between Public square and East 22nd Street. The city blames the collapse on underground tubing that belongs to Cleveland Public Power.

The city has targeted 75 locations along that stretch of Euclid Avenue for repairs. Some of the most hazardous sections of sidewalks have already been fixed, includng the so-called "OK Corral."

That's a term some downtown employees gave a 10-foot section of hazardous sidewalk outside the PNC bank building. It  had been sealed off with a picket fence for two years.

Patti Yanoviz is among a number of downtown employees who have tripped on sections of sinking sidewalks and injured themselves.

"It's still potentially dangerous, but this is a huge step in the right direction," said Yanoviz, who was told of the city's repairs.

The city estimates the work will cost $225,000.

Cleveland: 'End of the World' coffee a hot item

CLEVELAND -- A local coffee company is marking the Mayan calendar by selling an "End of the World" blend.

Phoenix Coffee Company, which operates three coffee shops in the Cleveland area, secured a shipment of coffee beans grown in Central America by the Mayans themselves.

"Mayan coffee, that's right, grown by Mayan farmers," proudly announced Christopher Feran, coffee and marketing director of Phoenix Coffee.

"They still exist, they still live, and they still produce the finest coffee in the world."

The blend will be offered only until the date the Mayan calendar predicts the world will end, that is, Friday, Dec. 21.

"It ends when the world ends. You've got until Friday," Feran said, of his End of the World Blend, which is marketed as "the best cup of coffee you'll never have again."

Some Phoenix Coffee customers have been buying several bags at a time this week, Feran told WKYC.

He did not know if they may have been planning to take it with them into the afterlife.

Exclusive: Cleveland Plain Dealer publisher discusses changes

CLEVELAND -- After weeks of silence, Plain Dealer publisher Terry Egger is now speaking about dramatic changes in store for the Plain Dealer, its readers, advertisers and Northeast Ohio.

He is Tom Beres' guest on Sunday Morning's Between the Lines that airs just after 10 a.m. during Channel 3 News Sunday Morning.

Egger denied rampant rumors that a decision's been made to have the Plain Dealer publish just three days a week.

"There will be changes coming. We're not going out of business. No decision's been made not to publish a newspaper seven days a week," he said.

He explained that recent ongoing negotiations with the Newspaper Guild that represents reporters, photographers and editors made it difficult to discuss looming changes.

58 Guild jobs are being eliminated or switched to the paper's website.

The resolution of a contract enables him to say more. He's held a batch of meetings with community leaders to update them on the paper's future and hear their ideas and concerns.

He admits the paper is still making money.

But Advance, the chain that owns it , has gone to a 3-day-a-week publishing with expanded websites at other papers it owns.

"We are still profitable at this point. If you have a position of strength, you've got to make a strategic investment and innovate. People are moving to digital consumption, not incrementally, but dramatically" he said.

Advance has been more agressive than other newspaper chains in pursuing this strategy. It's thus far declined to pursue charging for stories on its website.

The new labor agreement allows non-union web reporters' stories to appear in the paper.

"We are not union-busting," Egger said, in response to others' contention it is.

He claims the paper's goals remain covering the news, remaining a healthy business, and fulfilling its role as a civic leader.

A Guild campaign to Save the Daily paper is engaging readers and supporters but has not really caught fire with Greater Cleveland's business, political and civic leaers.

If the rumored changes happen, Cleveland would become the nation's largest city with no daily paper.

Egger had planned to step aside in January, after more than six years as publisher.

He now says, he will stay on through whatever changes are coming.  Those won't occur before summer, he said.

Egger's entire interview with Tom Beres, Mary Anne Sharkey and Dennis Eckart  can be seen Sunday morning on Between the Lines

Medina: Facebook support for Sandy Hook gunman leads to arrest

MEDINA -- As the nation continues to mourn last week's shooting tragedy in Connecticut, a local man finds himself in trouble with the law all over a post on Facebook.

Joseph Resovsky, 20, says he wanted to make a point with this Facebook post but it could cost him a $1,000 fine and 30 days in jail.

This case promises to test the limits of free speech and answer the question: At what point do hurtful words become criminal?

Joe Resovsky is now rethinking last Saturday's lunchtime Facebook post. He wrote, "I'm so happy somebody shot up all those little (expletive). Viva la School Shootings!!!!"

So what did he mean by his poison post? WKYC confronted Resovsky to find out.

What in the world were you thinking?

"I don't know. Honestly, like I say, mainly to prove a point," Resovsky said.

Do you own a gun?

"Ah, no."

Resovsky was asked why he hesitated answering the question.

"I used to own one. I don't anymore," Resovsky said.

Had you entertained thoughts of such things or violence?

"No."

Anything in your past?

"No. I'm not a violent person," Resovsky said.

Resovsky says he was testing the theory that, no matter how outlandish the post, it would soon be forgotten.

It had the opposite affect.

Medina police were inundated with complaint calls and emails. They charged him with inducing panic.

"This is the modern day equivalent of yelling fire in a movie theater. He just does it through the internet," Medina Police Lt. Dave BirkBichler said.

Many communities across the country went on high alert after the Sandy Hook school massacre.

Concerned about copycats, Medina has reassigned a half dozen police officers to its elementary and middle schools. They've been guarding the campuses since Monday and will remain until the Christmas break.

Police say Resovsky made no direct threat but the timing and the fear in the community pushes the comment to a criminal level.

Resovsky says he apologized to the people who responded to his post.

The reaction was such that he deleted his Facebook page altogether.

Investigator: Easy money that Ohioans already deserve

With the help of Channel 3 News Investigator Tom Meyer, the state of Ohio is hand-delivering large amounts of cash to folks across the state.

The Director of the Ohio Department of Commerce paid a visit to Rosie Maxsym, of Parma, and presented her with a check for $75,845.

It may seem like an early Christmas gift, but the money she received is a life insurance policy her stepfather left to her ailing mother, who's now in a local nursing home.

"It's great. It's great. I really don't know what to say except it's a dream come true," said Maxsym, who says the money will give her the ability to bring her mother home for the holidays and provide and care for her.

A state database shows $73 million in benefits never claimed by beneficiaries either because they forgot about the policies, didn't know they existed, or were never told about them by the insurance companies.

The state has processed 13,000 claims worth $7 million. There's more than $1 billion still to claim.l

"This really came about because of your hard work," said Director Goodman, referring to the Investigator's attempts to reunite Ohioans with their money.

If you think you are owed money from an unclaimed life insurance policy, you can go to the Ohio Department of Commerce website and go to online treasure hunt'

You can also enter your name into the state database we've attached to this story to see if there's any money for you to claim.

To use the database (located above and to the left of the article) put in a name to search.  Click on the blue link in the search results to find out more details about a particular claim.

Shaker Heights: Two dead in morning fire were father, daughter

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 19 Desember 2012 | 10.49

SHAKER HEIGHTS -- Firefighters found the body of a 62-year-old father and 18-year-old daughter on the second floor.

The Shaker Heights Fire Department is still investigating how the fire started, while neighbors say a prayer for those who will never come home.

Flames spread quickly through the Daleford home --  chasing five family members out. Two others never made it.

It's a tragedy. It's tragic to lose anybody at anytime of the year. And to have two fatalities, it's difficult for all first responders, the family.

Heavy flames covered the entire first floor of the home just after 4 a.m. when fire crews from dozens of communities arrived.

Crews attempted to make an attack and were pushed out pre-flashover. All they could do was put out the blaze.

Once inside,  firefighters found the body of a 62-year-old father and 18-year-old daughter on the second floor.

Wadsworth: The 'Giving Dolls' being sent to Newtown

WADSWORTH -- The nation wants to reach out and comfort Newtown Connecticut and some of that comfort is coming from right here in Northeast Ohio.

"These kids are going through things that really shouldn't be in there young tender lives but they are," says Jan Householder, founder and executive director of The Giving Doll.

Householder is making a difference by weaving threads and cloths together to mend broken hearts -- dolls designed to comfort children in hard times.

Householder recieved an email from Connecticut with a special request -- "Help mend Newtown."

The request came after reading a blog about a child named Ty Louis Campbell, who died of brain cancer in New York.

The Giving Dolls sent the Campbells a doll of their own.

"I was so impressed by the impact of the doll and their grieving process. I would like to see if there is a way to get these dolls to the children at Newtown affected by today's tragedy," said the emailer.

In Wadsworth, Householder and her group of volunteers cancelled their holiday party to make the dolls.

"The doors have been opened and we are able to reach these children. Who would have thought that we would have a personal connection here in Wadsworth?" Householder added.

The personal connection is a preschool teacher who went to Sandy Hook Elementary and graduated from Newtown Public Schools.

In a room full of volunteers and one day of hard work and heart, over 60 dolls were made on Tuesday.

"I don't think we realize the impact these dolls will have but we give them with love and we just want these kids to feel love and feel some comfort," she said.

It's an Ohio comfort that will be delieverd by FedEx Custom Critical in Newtown by the end of the week.

Cuyahoga Falls: Changes in security coming

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 18 Desember 2012 | 10.49

CUYAHOGA FALLS -- The day started with a meeting of principals and police to review security in the Cuyahoga Falls School District.

"We realize that we need to deal with accessibility to our schools. We have older buildings and that is one issue we will address," says Superintendent Todd Nichols.

They will make sure there is one entrance only that is under surveillance during the school day. Monday, they also made sure teachers locked their doors while teaching class.

This week the district plans to continue with tight security. Medina and Willoughby-Eastlake Schools also had more of a police presence today, as did schools throughout the nation.

Cleveland: Newtown relaunches gun control debate

CLEVELAND -- Gun rights advocates and backers of more gun control are standing up for their respective viewpoints in the wake of Newtown schoolchildren shootings.

Does the country need to revisit all it's gun law? Should the ban on assault rifles be reinstated? Should there be a ban on large ammunition clips?

Should the mental health of prospective buyers be more vigorously reviewed?

President Obama promised to use his power to take actions that would make mass shootings less likely.

Gun rights advocates point out that the tragedy happened in a state -- Connecticut -- with some of the toughest gun laws.

In Ohio, the renewed debate is underway.

Tom Beres moderated discussions between Fairmount Temple Senior Rabbi Robert Nosanchuk, of the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence, and Philip Mulivor, spokesman for the group Ohioans for Concealed Carry.

Cleveland Weather: White Christmas?

It is the number one question of the week:  Will we have a white Christmas?

As great as forecasting skill CAN be, it is still too early to tell.  But I would say we have a 60-40 shot that it will be white ... just HOW white is the question.

You see, we have several strong storm systems expected to come through the Great Lakes region in the coming days.

The first will sweep into the area tomorrow morning, which may bring a mix of rain and snow that will be more of an inconvenience than anything (no accumulation).

The second will arrive Thursday and is considerably stronger than the Tuesday storm.  As of now, the center of the storm is expected to track over Chicago.  This means Thursday's temperatures will soar into the 50s as rain spreads over the area.  That rain will change over to snow Thursday night and snow will still be in the forecast for much of the area on Friday.

If we get a snow accumulations Friday (which looks likely), will that snow make it through the weekend into the Christmas holiday?

This is where things get complicated.

One set of forecast models keep us cool and dry, so any snow that we have on the ground will be partially melting.

The other set of forecast models plunges temperatures for the weekend and into Christmas, which would not only let the Friday snow stick around, but likely ADD snow (especially in the snowbelts).

For now, I am going to go with a middle-of-the-road kind of forecast for the weekend and into Christmas Day.

My hunch is that the colder air will win out, which will mean a white Christmas, but certainly there will be changes to the forecast before the holiday arrives.

Fingers crossed!!!

Tonight: Mostly cloudy with rain, which may mix with snow closer to dawn. Mid 30s  Winds: N 5-10 mph.

Tuesday: Morning light rain/snow mix or possibly snow showers, then mostly cloudy to partly sunny.  Low 40s Winds: SE 3-7 mph.

Wednesday: Partly sunny. Warmer. Mid/upper 40s

Thursday: Mostly cloudy start, then windy and rainy. Mild. Low/mid 50s

Friday: Snow showers likely. Cloudy, colder and windy. Mid 30s

Saturday: Mostly cloudy with a chance for snow showers. Mid 30s

Sunday: Mostly cloudy with a chance for snow showers.  Low 30s

Christmas Eve:  Mostly cloudy with a chance for snow showers.  Low 30s

Obama offers 'love, prayers of nation' to Newtown

Written by
Associated Press

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- A mournful President Barack Obama said Sunday that the nation is failing to keep its children safe, pledging that change must come after an elementary-school massacre left 20 children dead.

"What choice do we have?" Obama said. "Are we really prepared to say that we're powerless in the face of such carnage, that the politics are too hard?"

In a vigil for the fallen, in a moment of grief that spread around the world, Obama conceded that none of his words would match the sorrow. But he declared to the community of Newtown: "You are not alone."

For Obama, ending his fourth year in office, it was another sorrowful visit to another community in disbelief. It is the job of the president to be there, to listen and console, to offer help even when the only thing within his grasp is a hug.

The massacre of 26 children and adults at Sandy Hook Elementary on Friday elicited horror around the world, soul-searching in the United States, fresh political debate about gun control and questions about the incomprehensible - what drove the suspect to act.

Privately, Obama told Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy that Friday was the most difficult day of his presidency.

Obama to travel Sunday to Newtown, Connecticut

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 16 Desember 2012 | 10.49

Written by
Associated Press

WASHINGTON  --  President Barack Obama will attend a memorial service Sunday in Newtown, Conn., the site of Friday's deadly elementary school shooting.

Twenty-six people, including 20 children, were killed when a man opened fire inside the school.

Hours after the shooting, a tearful Obama said he grieved first as a father. In those remarks and later in his Saturday radio address, Obama called for "meaningful action" to prevent such shootings, but did not say what it should be.

Obama's visit to Newtown for an interfaith vigil would be the fourth time he has traveled to a city after a mass shooting.

The president had planned to travel to Maine on Wednesday for an event promoting his positions in "fiscal cliff" negotiations, but the White House canceled that trip because of the shooting.

Rockingham County Sheriff Michael Downing said Lanza's brother James Champion, a retired police captain in Kingston, N.H., and other relatives express their "heartfelt sorrow" and "the whole family is traumatized by this event."

Champion would not discuss what might have triggered his nephew to go on the shooting spree.

Nancy Lanza's family described her as kind, loving and considerate. She was once a stockbroker for John Hancock in Boston.

Chardon reacts to the Connecticut school shooting

CHARDON -- One Northeast Ohio community knows just what people at Sandy Hook Elementary School are going through after a horrifying school shooting.

You can still find red ribbons flying in Chardon, a winter season after the high school shooting that killed three and injured two others. Police say TJ Lane was the gunman. He faces trial in January.

"You know you think about it, then you hear something like what happened this morning, and it brings back all those memories again," said Cheryl Farley, a mom of the three. Her high school student daughter was at Chardon High on February 27.

"It's crazy anymore. You don't know what the world is you know. It's sad you know," said Jim Barnes, who lives nearby.

"Kind of opened up that break in my heart that I had here," said Chardon School Superintendent Joe Bergant. He's been a pillar of strength for a community in mourning.

"It's been an emotional rollercoaster since February," he said. "There are many days that are good days, and then an event will happen in the community or state news, or national news that will kind of throw us back down that roller coaster for kind of a quick ride to the bottom."

That's why he still encourages people to talk to their children, their family and use school resources to help those fragile even before the shooting stay strong.

"The last thing we need is for people not to talk to somebody," he said.

Bergant says he prays for those in Sandy Hook, and knows from experience, life won't ever be the same there.

"Not only is today going to be bad for them, It's going to be bad for quite some time. They need to talk to people. They need to use the appropriate counseling," said Bergant.

Farley says while it's challenging for her oldest daughter to move past the Chardon shooting, she can't imagine the fear in children barely older than her four-year-old daughter.

"You just can't understand why these people are doing this. Why, why would you take a gun and go and shoot elementary school kids?" she said.

She's heartbroken for the families.

"I don't know what I could tell them, there's nothing really you can tell them," she said. "It's going to hurt."

School security experts emphasize 'human element'

CLEVELAND -- Local school security experts say technology is necessary, but training and awareness are critical.

Ken Trump, of Parma, who runs National School Safety Services, was on his child's playground acting as a volunteer monitor on Friday when he got word of the kindergarten massacre in Connecticut.

He says proper training and awareness must be combined with the latest security technology.

"We can have the security equipment, but if we have that camera at the front door and somebody buzzes one legitimate person in and two or three people come in behind him," Trump says, "we need to make sure our school staff is trained and our parents to understand why they can't do that as well."

Trump says while such incidents are rare, they can happen, and parents should become involved in questions of security at their children's schools.

"Parents need to send their kids to school, not be alarmed, but have supportive and probing questions and conversations with their school officials to see what measures are in place," Trump counsels.

He says some incidents may never be prevented, when individuals with mental problems or other deep-seated problems are intent on murder.

"We're seeing the' lone wolf acto'r from movie theatres, places of worship, and our malls," Trump said. "It's unrealistic to think we couldn't potentially have the same things cross our schoolhouse doors. On a day to day basis, it's highly unlikely but we have to be prepared for the worst-case scenario."

Security consultant Tim Dimoff, of SACS Consulting in Akron, says such incidents have become a terrible fact of life in America, whether in schools, churches, or workplaces.

"Most of the victims, most of the locations, one thing we have found out they all say is, it couldn't happen here," Dimoff says. "And we have to stop thinking it won't happen here and start saying if it does, how do we prevent, how do we react, how do we minimize the damage."

Both security experts encourage parents to become active members of the school community.

The next court date is a pretrial at 9 a.m. Dec. 19 and Studer's trial has been scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 29 before Stark County Common Pleas Court Judge Frank G. Forchione.

Studer, 46, of Massillon, formerly the head freshman basketball coach and building aide at Jackson High School, is accused accused of secretly video recording his players and student-athletes as they showered nude.

As of late November, the total number of victims had risen to 74.

Prosecutors say that the cameras in the locker rooms' shower areas had been recorded as far back as 2005.

He remains in the Stark County jail, so far facing eight felony charges of illegal use of a minor in nudity oriented material.

Studer is well known in the community, and was well liked by the students at Jackson High School.

He had coached basketball for 27 years and is an alumnus of Jackson High School. He resigned Nov. 14, the day he was arrested.

Studer also had access to security cameras at the school.

Jackson Township Police assisted U.S. Postal Inspectors in serving a search warrant at Studer's home Nov. 14, in a separate investigation of child pornography.

Inside the home, they discovered media, containing footage from inside the basketball locker room shower area. Upon questioning Studer, police learned Studer had assembled and disassembled hidden cameras in the locker room as he went in and out of the facility over the years.

Police believe more charges are pending, on a state and federal level. Investigators are not sure how many hours of footage Studer recorded, or exactly how many students he filmed over the years.

High school parents who found out about the investigation through their children instead of school officials were angry that the district did not notify parents first.

Studer is represented by attorney James Haupt.

If convicted, he faces a sentence ranging from probation to 64 years in prison.

Exclusive: Chardon shooting survivors on TJ Lane's upcoming trial

This is a story of hope and perspective from two boys who survived the Chardon school shooting.

In a story you'll only see on Channel 3, both Nick Walczak and Nate Mueller tell their stories of survival and what they expect in the upcoming trial of accused shooter TJ Lane.

WKYC's Monica Robins has been following Nick's recovery since a month after the February shooting.

Nick says he's hoping for a "normal" Christmas.

"I've already been given everything I could ever want in my life," Nick says. He adds he plans on doing the giving this year.

The only thing he truly wants is independence, so we connected him with a dog trainer who can provide a service dog.  Nick and the Golden Retriever named Turner have about nine months of training before they'll be working together.

Nick and Nate are both preparing themselves for the January trial of TJ Lane. Both expect to testify.

Nate is hoping it won't be necessary.

"I hope it doesn't go to trial, I hope he takes a plea deal," Nate says.

They saw Lane in court for the first time since the shooting last Saturday.

"I thought I'd see this big, tough teenager. He just looked like a little kid to me," Nick says.

"He looked pretty beat up and that made me happy, to see that he's not happy," Nate added.

The two seniors are also helping Chardon High School prepare and plan for the one-year anniversary of the shooting, but they're not sure how the event will be observed yet.

Northeast Ohio's own 12-12-12 phenomenons

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 13 Desember 2012 | 10.49

CLEVELAND -- The 12-12-12 phenomenon is being celebrated all over the world and right here in Northeast Ohio.

Twelve is a number associated with harmony as many couples confess their love for one another.

"To have your wedding on a day where there is perfect harmony, I don't think you can ask for better luck than that," said Judge Kathryn Michael.

But before they were able to say I do, Emily Grace was born at 12:25 a.m. Wednesday morning, getting the best of what Cathy Fender calls "both worlds."

"It's like the day of Christmas 12:25 12-12-12, I thought that was actually better."

And if being born on the 12th day of December in 2012 wasn't enough, meet Hannah Ginley. She got 12 roses for her 12th birthday. It was a day she has been waiting for her whole life.

"I just think it's really cool because it won't happen for another hundred years," said Ginley.

Still want to know where that baby was born at 12:12 on 12-12-12?

It happened Wednesday afternoon at Hillcrest Hospital. Her name is Forever Cierra but she only has 10 fingers and 10 toes.

Fairport Harbor: PUCO fines Dominion East Ohio for explosions

COLUMBUS -- The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio is requiring Dominion East Ohio to pay a fine of $500,000 and to take steps to ensure compliance with federal natural gas pipeline safety standards.

The penalties are based upon the PUCO staff's investigation of a January 2011 series of fires in Fairport Harbor in which 11 homes were severely damaged and 150 homes required appliance repair or replacement, causing an estimated $1.3 million in property damage.

In its investigation, the PUCO staff reported that two low pressure regulating devices at the High Street regulator station in Fairport Harbor had failed on Jan. 24, 2011 due to the presence of pipeline fluids in the devices, which caused the pressure in the system to increase.

PUCO staff concluded that Dominion East Ohio had violated several sections of the Code of Federal Regulations, as well as provisions of the company's standard operating procedures and guidelines.

As part of the Order approved by the Commission, Dominion East Ohio will continue to conduct a physical inventory of all regulator stations in its Ohio pipeline distribution systems and will modify its SOP to require an inspector to perform an internal inspection that exceeds federal law of a regulator when pipeline fluids are suspected.

The company has also agreed to develop a written fluid mitigation program to detect and remove fluids in its pipeline system.

In addition, Dominion must pay the $500,000 fine to the Ohio General Revenue Fund within 10 business days.

"The PUCO is committed to ensuring the safety of consumers," said Chairman Todd A. Snitchler. "By requiring operators of gas pipelines to comply with pipeline safety law, the PUCO seeks to ensure that pipeline operators take all reasonable steps to provide necessary safeguards. Today's Order represents just the second time this Commission has rendered a fine of this magnitude further emphasizing the PUCO's position in these matters and we fully expect Dominion's compliance to prevent a future event of this nature."

The Commission's opinion and order in case number 12-380-GA-GPS will be available online at www.PUCO.ohio.gov.

Middlefield: Ohio Amish say there's no 'Amish Mafia'

MIDDLEFIELD -- Amish culture is known for its simplicity and its mystery. Now that a new reality show promises to show a wilder side, some local church members say that's not reality.

Discovery Channel's Amish Mafia preview shows guns, violence and criminal dealings. It's far from the accepted image of old-world Amish life.

But show producers says -- despite re-enactments -- this story is true.

"Never. Never heard of an Amish Mafia," said James Miller, who lives in Middlefield.

"Kind of like an oxymoron. An Amish Mafia. They aren't Amish anymore at that point. If they have Mafia in their head, they are probably excommunicated or are not Amish."

Miller keeps his face off camera for his religion, part of the same Christian teachings that keep life simple, family oriented and low profile.

"Kind of puts chills up your back. It's not really what we're standing up to be, as a Christian," he said. "Mafia just doesn't belong in our vocabulary, or even belong named to us."

The Church denies the Amish Mafia's existence, but the show presents an organized religion that shares characteristics with organized crime.

"It's just a lot of propaganda," Miller said.

Convicted beard-cutter Sam Mullet and his crew, who carried out their own punishments on other Amish, are featured in week two.

"He's not an example of the Amish at all. He's excommunicated, as far as I know, from most of the Amish churches," Miller said, of Mullet. "It's just not, it's not the way you do."

While it's true the Amish are self-reliant, Miller says his community abides by outside, or "English" law.

"They're not better than anybody else. If they get in trouble, they need to do the time," he said.

Miller wants the Amish to be known for their work ethic and Christian behavior.

"Known as good people, not Mafia and gangsters and stuff like that."

The show Amish Mafia premieres Wednesday at 9 p.m. on the Discovery Channel.

Investigator: City officer lives with career criminal

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 12 Desember 2012 | 10.49

CLEVELAND -- A city corrections officer is living with a career criminal who's currently on probation after being accused of shooting at a mother and her son, then threatening to kill a police officer, a Channel 3 News undercover investigation found.

Jennifer Korb has been a city corrections officer since 2009, while the man she lives with, Tracy Bunch, has racked up 20 convictions that include grand theft, drug trafficking and aggravated assault, according to court records.

In all, Bunch has spent more than five years in state prison as a result of his crimes.

Bunch denied the two are dating or living together, despite the fact that the address listed in court records matches Korb's Warrensville Heights home, as well as undercover video shot by the station that shows the two walking arm in arm while shopping.

Korb refused to comment, telling the Investigator Tom Meyer, "Do you think you should be here bothering a hard-working city worker that has put in her full eight hours today?"

Under most correctional facility policies, a guard is prohibited from living with or fraternizing with someone involved in the justice system, said Cuyahoga County Sheriff Bob Reid.

In Cuyahoga County, ex-offenders have to be out of the system for a year before county officers can get involved them. State prisons have similar provisions.

Policies against unauthorized relationships protect the integrity of officers, who might bring contraband into the facility or pass notes to an accomplice on behalf of the offender.

"It's common sense driven and it's just a bad, bad idea," Reid said. "You're held to a higher standard (as a corrections officer) and the standard is of character and honest."

No such policy exists at the Cleveland House of Corrections, where Public Safety Director Marty Flask said that "people are held accountable for their actions, not their relationships."

"If an employee, however, engages in inappropriate or illegal activity with an arrested suspect or inmate, that employee will be held accountable," Flask said, in an email.

The relationship between Korb and Bunch goes back at least a year to November 2011, Channel 3 News found. That's when Bunch is quoted in a police report as threatening a woman by telling her, "I'm (expletive) with the police now and she's gonna (expletive) you up, too."

He invoked his relationship with Korb a second time this March while threatening the same woman, police files indicate.

Bunch has used his relationship with Korb to avoid prison time after pleading guilty to a felony gun charge and misdemeanor aggravated felony for the July shooting.

The shooting occurred on East 144th Street when Bunch mistakenly thought a 21-year-old man was badmouthing him, according to the man's mother.

Bunch came out of a house and fired four to five times at the man and his mother, who tried to hide behind a tree to avoid being shot, she said.

Bunch continued to threaten the two as he was being placed in a police cruiser, according to a police report. Then, on the way to the station, Bunch told the arresting officer that his "life is on the line now. When I get out, someone is gonna die."

But during the sentencing hearing last month, Bunch apologized to the judge for his actions and said it was the result of substance abuse.

Bunch said he was getting treatment at a rehabilitation center and living in a supportive environment with Korb.

Korb stood up during the hearing and acknowledged that Bunch was living with her. She did not say anything, nor was she identified as a city corrections officer.

In the end, the judge sentenced Bunch to two years on probation. If he violates the terms of probation, Bunch will be sentenced to 6 months in the House of Corrections where Korb works.

With more than 25,000 arrests in Cleveland each year, Flask said it is inevitable that a police officer, guard or prosecutor will have a relationship with an offender.

The city does have rules in place that prohibit illegal or inappropriate activity, including conduct that diminishes the esteem of the House of Corrections, Flask said, and "violation of the law or those policies will result in sanctions."

Cleveland Weather: Seasonable & sunny

High pressure brings us fair weather, as a rule.  This is especially true when the high is "dynamic" or reaches through many layers of the atmosphere.

We have a large, dynamic high setting up over the eastern half of the country that will keep sunshine in our forecast for a few days.

Now, another rule... when a dynamic high is in place, you need something rather 'significant' to break it down.  A strong area of low pressure will be developing in the Plains on Friday.  This will work on the back side of the high to bring us clouds and eventually showers this weekend.

Tonight: Gradually clearing.  Colder!  Mid/upper 20s

Wednesday: Mostly sunny and seasonable. Upper 30s/low 40s

Thursday: Partly cloudy and warmer.  Mid 40s

Friday: Partly cloudy.  Upper 40s

Saturday: Partly to mostly cloudy. Scattered showers arrive late day into the evening. Upper 40s

Sunday: Cloudy with scattered rain showers. Mid 40s early falling into the upper 30s in the afternoon (change to scattered snow showers Sunday night)

Monday:  Early flurries, then partially clearing.  Upper 30s

Tuesday:  Mostly cloudy.  Upper 30s

Indians trade 4 players including Shin-Soo Choo

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Indians have confirmed that they made a three-way trade with the Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Indians received RHP Trevor Bauer, RHP Matt Albers and RHP Bryan Shaw from the Diamondbacks as well as OF Drew Stubbs from the Reds in exchange for popular fan favorite outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, Infielder Jason Donald, LHP Tony Sipp, and INF Lars Anderson along with cash considerations.

Choo, Donald and cash are being sent to Cincinnati while Sipp, Anderson and INF Didi Gregorius (from CIN) are going to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Following today's transactions the Indians 40-man roster remains at 40.

The deal was announced Tuesday night. There are reports that another deal could be brewing involving shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera.

Choo has been Cleveland's primary right fielder for the Indians since 2006. He should play centerfield and bat leadoff for the Reds.

Dealing Choo was seen as a necessity for the Indians. He was entering the final year of his contract and will be eligible for free agency in 2013.

The Indians have not been able to work out a deal with agent Scott Boras, who has turned down several extensions in recent years.

The 30-year-old Choo batted .283 with 16 homers and 67 RBIs in 155 games last season.

Geauga County: 'Thumper Trucks' take to the road

CHESTER -- Some residents thought it was a mini-earthquake shaking their Geauga County homes Sunday morning.

Phil Lowry, who lives on state Route 306 near Cedar Road, said the rumbling and shaking began about 10 a.m. Sunday and did damage to the inside and exterior of his house.

"There was small, little breakage of the windows, cracked glass in the house, the marble top across my fireplace is broken," Lowry told WKYC. "Small things like that."

The vibrations were actually caused by a team of three giant vehicles called Thumper Trucks. The technical name of the truck is a "virboseis vehicle" because it creates powerful vibrations that can resonate up to two miles beneath the surface of the ground.

"When they come in and do this kind of testing, I'm concerned because it's only a matter of time, based on the shale beds that we live on, that our whole area is going to be compromised," said Chester Township Trustee Judy Caputo.

She is especially concerned that if seismic tests show recoverable stores of natural gas or oil, and if so-called fracking wells are used to extract those resources, the water wells of township residents could be affected.

"With 11,000 people here, you ruin our well water, you're going to have lot of issues and a lot of problems and a lot of illness, I think is the next thing," she predicted, "because of what they use when they frack these wells."

Carl Eykyn was in his basement Sunday morning when he heard the vibrations rumbling his house on Route 306 just south of Cedar Road. His concern was also for what might happen in the future, should landowners decide to lease their property to exploration companies which use the hydraulic fracturing, or fracking method of drilling.

"From what I've heard further out east, they've had problems with wells and it's been in the news.  So, yeah, I'm a little concerned, so I'm hoping it's not me."

Chester residents told WKYC they were not expecting the Thumper Trucks on Sunday morning, which over the last few months had also been on Route 44 and on Auburn Road in Munson Township.

They indicated they would have appreciated better and more timely notification that the seismic tests, which cause very noticable vibrations and rumblings, were going to take place.
