Cleveland: Landlord closes Public Square nightclub

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 29 Juni 2013 | 10.49

CLEVELAND -- Patrons planning to spend a Friday evening at Lounge 75, a nightclub just off Public Square, were greeted by signs announcing the club's out of business there.

Last Saturday morning after closing time, 23-year-old Demario Warren was gunned down and killed near a parking lot close to the club. A 21-year-old girl was shot in the ankle.

Early this week, a memorial of stuffed animals and artificial flowers seemed out of place on a downtown sidewalk.

Police claimed trouble that started inside the club exploded outside.

Landlord Dan Dzina decided to cancel the club's lease.

He told Channel 3 News that while the club may not have been directly responsible for the shooting, it was drawing a young trouble-making crowd.

Dzina claimed the club had an off-duty policeman working outside and security guards inside the night of the shooting.

He says security cameras inside and outside the club showed no fights or violence.

There was a shooting near the same location two years ago.

It was a different club with a different name. Three men were wounded.

The club closed down last weekend after the shootings because of water problems.

City Councilman Joe Cimperman had vowed to go after the club's liquor license and use whatever means necessary to close it down.

City officials and downtown businesses have bad memories of violence in the Flats and other Warehouse District locations and wanted to clamp down on trouble before it got out of hand.

They know one nasty incident can do great damage to downtown's image despite the fact that crime statistics show it's a safe place.

Police have made no arrests in Warren's killing.

Tick population explodes in Northeast Ohio

SUMMIT COUNTY -- The Summit County Public Health department says this may be the worst year ever for ticks, and summer is prime season.

Since May, the environmental health supervisor says over a dozen tick specimens have been brought in for examination and testing.

Usually, the health department receives one or two samples a year.

At Cuyahoga Valley National Park, tick alert signs are posted, reminding visitors to protect themselves from the blood sucking bugs.

"Ticks have been expanding their ranges northward, and they're into Canada now. Northeast Ohio was a nice haven where we didn't have to deal with ticks forever, and I think our world has changed," says Lisa Petit, Chief of Science and Resource Management at Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

The most common species of tick in Northeast Ohio is the American dog tick, which can carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

While not all ticks carry the disease, Petit says everyone needs to be checking themselves, their children and pets after a day outdoors, even in the backyard.

"The climate change is happening, and we are getting warmer temperatures that are more conducive to the survival of ticks," Petit says.

She recommends long pants tucked into socks or boots, and long sleeves.

Repellant with the ingredient DEET or Permethrin is useful for keeping ticks away.

The CDC has a list of recommendations on how to identify ticks, safely remove them, and what warning signs of illness to look for.

Blog: Paula Deen will survive this 'fall from grace'

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

Between her cookware line, TV shows, furniture and books, Paula Deen's empire is estimated at $100 million annually and financial experts say she's lost half that at this point.

This only a week after court records were released where she admitted using a racial slur in the past and two days after she made a tearful apology on NBC's Today Show. Personally, I think what happened to Deen is an over-reaction.

The Food Network won't renew her show after the end of the month, Target and Home Depot are pulling her merchandise, Caesar's removed her buffets at its casinos...and the list goes on.

But what is not being reported nationally is that Medina, Ohio-based Sandridge Food Corporation says it's proud to provide unwavering support for Paula Deen.

In a release Wednesday, the company stated that in response to her appearance on the Today Show, it is even more evident that Paula Deen embodies a profound commitment to fairness for all.

"We are very pleased with Paula Deen's interview this morning offering her heartfelt apologies," said Mark D. Sandridge, CEO, Sandridge Food Corporation. "She reaffirmed what we already knew to be true -- her equality for all."

As a family company with strong core values, Sandridge says it will continue to stand behind Paula Deen through this controversy. Sandridge will forge full speed ahead on present projects with the Paula Deen Foods team.

The Paula Deen empire is huge. Forbes magazine ranked her as the fourth highest-earning celebrity chef last year, bringing in $17 million. (She's behind Gordon Ramsay, Rachael Ray and Wolfgang Puck, according to Forbes.)

Experts say that, by the beginning of 2014, she will likely have lost 80 percent of her revenue. That will leave her with about $20 million annually.

But her book sales are soaring, which may mean that the average American can forgive and forget her use of a slur so many years ago. It's the companies who fear association with her will hurt THEIR image that were quick to drop her.

Deen is a fighter, though. She grew up in Albany, Georgia and was grappling with a failed marriage, the death of her parents and a prolonged battle with agoraphobia when she started her home-based catering business called The Bag Lady in June 1989, according to her company's website.

Then a mother of two teenage boys, Jamie and Bobby, and on the verge of homelessness, she used her last $200 to start the catering business. That blossomed.

According to her website, it was five years later that she opened her first restaurant called The Lady and Sons in Savannah, Ga. Her first cookbook, "The Lady and Sons Savannah Country Cookbook," came out in 1998.

Soon after, she had her first TV appearance on QVC. But it was when "Paula's Home Cooking" began airing on the Food Network in 2002 that she started to hit stardom, according to her website.

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting her several months ago when she stopped by our station for a promotional event for an advertiser who carries her furniture line. She was gracious and friendly and, if I may say it, a bit shorter than I thought she would be.

This is a woman who has faced the devil before and is facing the devil again. As the saying goes, "the South will rise again." Paula Deen is not a quitter.

Surprise! Who is creeping on your medical records?

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

The days of doctor/patient privacy are dwindling as more agencies and companies wield technology to peer into your medical records.

Privacy advocates are now bracing for full implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act, which calls for more electronic record keeping and more opportunities for database mining of health records by marketers, credit agencies and law enforcement.

The latest example of this is the FICO medical adherence score. The credit rating company started collecting prescription information in 2011 and applying proprietary algorithms to determine who is most at risk for misusing their medication.

The company said it uses the information to help health professionals identify those at risk for under-using or over-using medicine.

Privacy advocates argue this information can easily be used to set health care costs or determine creditworthiness.

HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, was supposed to put our medical information under lock and key.

Privacy attorney Lee Tien, of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said the boundaries aren't strong enough.

"Loophole might be too strong a word," Tien said. "But there are channel flows of data to the government that are not sufficiently protected."

HIPAA is supposed to protect us.

But bill collectors, law enforcement, Homeland Security, attorneys, auditors, accountants, storage facilities, employers and clearing houses that process insurance payments all get varying degress of access to our medical records, according to the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse.

Currently, the Medical Adherence Score is not accessible to the public. Tien said people should think carefully before revealing medical information on the internet via symptom checkers or health assessment tests.

"That data is no longer just in your hands, it's in their hands," Tien said. "There is a lot of free stuff on the internet that we love, but there is a catch, and it's usually your privacy."

If you would like to reclaim some control over your medical information, check out the links listed below:

Akron | Food trucks look for a place downtown

AKRON -- Food trucks are popping up in cities all over the country and as the trend grows, so does the friction.

Akron is the latest place for the food truck debate. It's truck operators against brick and mortar restaurants, and city leaders are mediating, looking for some common ground.

The lunch rush in downtown Akron has lots of choices for workers looking for a bite. What's not on the menu? Food trucks.

It's almost a 30-year-old law on the books that prevents anybody from selling anything of value from a vehicle.

Jeff Winer co-owns "The Orange Truk" food truck. He and his crew frequent Western Summit County -- Fairlawn, Copley, Bath, Norton and Richfield.

The Orange Truk Facebook page

They offer their cuisine to office workers who may have limited time for lunch. Food trucks targeting Akron have some restaurant owners worried.

Suzie Graham is with Downtown Akron Partnership. "Sometimes, although it's exciting and fun, that vibrant food truck operation can be an immediate threat to brick and mortar restaurants," Graham said.

Winer says his customers are different than customers going to a sit-down establishment, citing Cleveland's food truck success.

Winer says "Come up to Walnut and 12th in downtown Cleveland on a Wednesday and see all of the people that come out to the street to eat off the trucks and then look at all the restaurants within a block, block and a half and see how busy they are."

Downtown Akron Partnership is open to food trucks, with some protections.

They are looking for ways and areas and zones where they can create a balance and have all the vibrancy and excitement of introducing these trendy food trucks to Akron, as well as maintaining or brick and mortar reataurant businesses.

Akron City Council is forming a committee of city leaders, representatives from food trucks and downtown restaurants, hoping to forge a path to compromise.

New concerns about safety in downtown Cleveland

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 25 Juni 2013 | 10.49

CLEVELAND -- There's lots of concern Monday about a couple violent incidents downtown over the weekend.

Two people shot, one killed after a crowd spilled out of a Public Square nightclub. And a police officer shot and wounded a man during a traffic stop.

Understandably,  violent crime and a homicide downtown gets lots more media coverage because of where it happened. And political and business leaders know one incident can do lots of public relations damage.

They are restating their case that downtown is a safe place and turning up the heat on the nightclub apparently involved.

A memorial for Demario Warren, 23, in an unlikely spot just off Public Square.

Lamont Weakley is a regular at Lounge 75, the nightclub off Public Square where police think trouble turned violent outside.

There's a "no guns allowed" sign, even though the law doesn't allow them in bars and clubs.

Lamont doesn't blame the club. "When you get fools and guns, people with guns, that's type of stuff happens. This is a nice club. It's just the riff raff in the parking lot. Two years ago same location, different club here," Weakley said.

Police says trouble that started inside came outside.

"I'm not happy with the events," landlord Dan Dzina said. Dzina claims his inside and outside security cameras showed no fighting inside and club owners had an off-duty police officer and security guards on duty.

But he wants to stop the trouble "If it's not bringing the right crowd, not working, I'll talk to my attorney to see what we have to do."

Damage control is a big part of downtown's chief promoter Joe Marinucci's day.

When the convention center opens, downtown will be busier.

But more police and more cameras can't stop everything. City Councilman Joe Cimperman says he is going to do whatever it takes to shut down this night club, including targeting its liquor license.

City Hall has bad memories of what happened in The Flats and earlier, ugly chapters in the Warehouse District.

They want to do anything and everything to keep downtown and its image safe.

Nick Walczak meets his future service dog behind bars

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

MARION --  For the past several months, Turner's been an inmate at the North Central Correctional Complex

Behind barbed wire he's learning skills to carry him through life.

But Turner doesn't have a prison number. He has four legs and fur and soon he'll be Nick Walczak's friend to freedom. Walczak survived the Chardon High School shootings back on Feb. 27, 2012.

Turner is a Golden Retriever who is being trained by inmates specifically for Nick's needs.

Related story: WAGS 4 KIDS Inmates with time training service dogs

He's one of six dogs in the program where 11 inmates rotate the dogs and train them for WAGS 4 Kids -- an organization that trains and matches service dogs that provide therapeutic, emotional and physical support for children with disabilities and their families.

Each dog is specially chosen as a puppy to be trained for a child. WAGS 4 Kids is a non-profit organization that survives solely on donations.

Each family is asked to have a fundraiser to help "Pay it Forward," not for their dog, but for the next one to go to a child in need.

These animals can cost up to $16,000 to train and care for.  Each inmate approved for the program is trained by a professional.

Training the dog can take nearly two years. WAGS 4 Kids covers the cost of all veterinary needs, food, supplies and training. The professional trainers often travel two hours or more to the prison to meet with the inmates and help train the dogs.

The dogs are rotated through the inmates so they learn to take commands from different types of people. It's also to help prevent bonding between inmate and dog.

To donate to WAGS 4 Kids, including specifically for Nick's fund, click HERE.

The organization is also having a charity fundraiser Wednesday, June 26.

Working Animals Giving Service 4 Kids (WAGS 4 Kids) is calling all of Cleveland's fun, single, charity-minded men and women to attend Cleveland "Have a Heart" Charity Bachelor Auction at Wilbert's in downtown Cleveland on Wednesday, June 26 from 6 p.m.-10 p.m.

This fun and unique event will introduce 25 of Cleveland's most eligible, single men being auctioned off for a custom date.

Bedford says 'no fireworks' after unruly 2012 crowd

BEDFORD -- Fireworks and the 4th of July go hand in hand. It's a tradition most Americans don't do without.

But some communities in Northeast Ohio are cutting out their fireworks displays and the reason isn't always lack of money.

"It's the event everybody looks forward to," says Chris Bulanda, who grew up in Bedford. And ever since he was a kid, he and his family would go to the 4th of July fireworks.

Except for last year.

"Last year was the first year that we didn't go. We actually watched them from our backyard because it was just crazy, the amount of people," says Bulanda.

The quaint town of Bedford all of a sudden became one of the hottest spots to be because they were one of the only ones in the region shooting off a fireworks display.

Ten people were arrested. Eight were not Bedford residents.

"I don't fault people for going to whereever the fireworks are. Our concern is the increased cost that we could possibly use the money for better things," says Bedford City Manager Hank Angelo.

Angelo says to control the crowd, the city would need to hire extra officers to ensure everyone's safety. And instead of risking another troublesome event, he and the City Council voted to not have fireworks this year.

While cities stop offering the necessary tradition, people are also taking fireworks into their own hands.

More states, including Michigan and Kentucky, opened up sale of consumer fireworks in the past 3 years.

And at-home use is up 100 percent since 1994.

Bedford isn't ruling out a fireworks display for 2014.

Weekend shootings a concern for businesses, tourists

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CLEVELAND --  A weekend of violence in one of the most popular areas of downtown Cleveland has both business owners and visitors on edge.

"We're staying at the Renaissance and then we heard gun shots," explained a woman visiting from California. "It's terrifying... and we will not come back, I'm sorry to say."

It's an alarming response Bar Louie manager Jamar Deanes is hoping will not become a trend among customers.

"We're at the equator of fun, as I like to call it," said Deanes, whose business is located at the corner of West 6th Street and St. Clair Avenue.

It is prime real estate for one of the hottest areas in downtown Cleveland, however it was also the scene of a crime Sunday when a police officer was forced to open fire during a traffic stop.

"I'm not surprised, but at the same time I'm disappointed... I just hope things turn around soon," said Deanes, in response to the shooting.  "It could turn into another flats situation where businesses are closing down one at a time and then soon they have to wipe it out."

The police involved shooting at W. 6th Street comes on the heels of another just the night before in Public Square.

Investigators say a fight inside Lounge 75 spilled into the street, leaving a 23-year-old man dead and a 21-year-old woman injured.

Sgt. Sammy Morris, with the Cleveland Police Department, says there's always a strong police presence downtown and these recent shootings should be viewed as isolated incidents.

"I hope things turn around because I love it down here and I have cause for concern, not just for my employees and myself, but all the other businesses as well," said Deanes.

DAYTON, Ohio -- Authorities say a plane carrying a wing walker has crashed at an Ohio air show, killing the pilot and stunt walker.

Dayton International Airport spokeswoman Linda Hughes and Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Anne Ralston confirmed the deaths to The Associated Press on Saturday.

The crash happened early Saturday afternoon at the Vectren Air Show near Dayton. No spectators were injured.

The show has been canceled for the remainder of the day. The names of those killed weren't released immediately.

A schedule posted on the event's website had Jane Wicker scheduled to perform.

A video posted on WHIO-TV shows the plane turn upside-down as Wicker sits on top of the wing.

The plane then tilts and crashes to the ground, exploding into flames as spectators scream.

North Olmsted mayor makes life or death decision

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 22 Juni 2013 | 10.49

NORTH OLMSTED -- Last 4th of July, while all of us were celebrating our country's independence, North Olmsted Mayor Kevin Kennedy was losing his.

The mayor said, "I just had a horrible fever.  It was 103 or 104. I had sweats, I was dizzy, I knew something was wrong."

The mayor checked into Fairview Hospital where an MRI showed he had a staph infection on his spine. He was rushed into emergency surgery to save his life.

The surgery was successful, but then came the next hurdle. Doctors gave the mayor only a ten percent chance of walking again.

That's where the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute came in.  They work with 900 patients a year. The mayor went through intense rehab for three hours a day. While learning to walk again, he ran the city and held meetings from his hospital room.

Seven months later, he conquered one mountain and went skiing at Lake Tahoe. Now he's always on the go, attending this luncheon and running into old friends.

And if you want to see what is driving this mayor on his road to recovery, just look at the wall of his office, and see the smiles of his four children.

The mayor said, "As you're laying there staring death in the eye, you realize the most important thing you hand down to your kids is your character and your values and in order to do that, you need to be around.  So there's no way in the world I was going to let them down."

The mayor says he kept this as a secret so the entire city would not be worried about what was going on at city hall. Now his goal is to run for re-election this fall, and maybe run 5K and 10K races down the road.

Judge: Ohio coin dealer Tom Noe shouldn't get new trial

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 21 Juni 2013 | 10.49

TOLEDO -- A federal magistrate judge is recommending against a new trial for the former Ohio coin dealer and Republican fundraiser at the center of a state investment scandal.

The recommendation filed Thursday says Tom Noe didn't sufficiently prove his arguments that he was denied a fair trial in several ways, including that the trial was not moved out of Toledo.

The court says any objections to the recommendation must be filed by early July.

Noe was convicted of stealing from a $50 million rare-coin fund he oversaw for the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation.

He is serving an 18-year prison term.

Noe's attorney didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comment after business hours Thursday.

Blog: No summer solstice celebration for Jimmy Dimora

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

Investigators can't find Jimmy Hoffa's body but we all know where to find Cuyahoga County's Jimmy Dimora.

According to his records, Dimora celebrates his 58th birthday Friday, which is also the first day of summer -- the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

Dimora will be spending his second birthday in a row in federal prison as he appeals his conviction on bribery, racketeering and corruption charges.

After living and dining well as the county's most visible and convivial commissioner for years, while also serving as the county's Democratic Party chairman, prison fare on Friday will likely be oatmeal for breakfast, fruits and vegetables and a sandwich for lunch, and a sandwich for dinner.

Quite a change from the steaks at Delmonico's in Independence or fine dining at the Las Vegas steakhouse during an infamous trip there in 2008. And as far as beverages? No Crown Royal whiskey for the former commissioner, only soft drinks, juice or water.

He can visit the prison commissary for candy, cookies and other sweets but he's likely on a diet to try and bring his weight under control. On the day of his arrest, he weighed in at about 360 pounds on his six-foot frame.

He also has a host of medical problems, not the least of which is phlebitis, which made walking even during his trial difficult.

If his appeal fails, Dimora will likely spend the next 27 birthdays in prison, emerging at the age of 85.

Dimora was taken into federal custody on March 9, 2012, just minutes after he was found guilty on 33 counts. From then until Feb. 5, 2013, Dimora was housed in the minimum security federal facility outside Youngstown.

Since then he's been in FCI Gilmer, in Glenville, West Virginia. It has one of the top medical facilities in the prison system so he is likely well-cared for, just not in the way he had become accustomed to.

And if he looked out his window or strolled through the prison yard on Thursday, he might have seen fireworks in the sky, as the state of West Virginia celebrated its 150th birthday Thursday.

While federal authorities again searched for Hoffa's body, the Jimmy best-known in Northeast Ohio needs no one to look for him.

James Riddle Hoffa was 62 when he was last seen outside the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Detroit on July 30, 1975, made a phone call, and vanished. The former Teamsters boss just vanished into thin air.

As you celebrate the summer solstice, maybe with a bonfire outside in the warm summer night in Northeast Ohio, savor your freedom.

Life is a gift and no one lives forever. Don't waste another day not enjoying it with the one or ones you love.

Cleveland | Elderly couple beaten, woman kidnapped

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 19 Juni 2013 | 10.49

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

CLEVELAND -- Police are searching for two possibly three men wanted in connection with a violent home invasion in which an elderly couple was beaten, robbed and the elderly woman kidnapped.

From the outside of their home on Victory Avenue, there's no sign of the struggle that Richard and Margaret Kovachik faced Monday night. Even neighbors can't make sense of the violence.

"You gotta wonder what goes through people's minds, what compels them to terrorize somebody, break into their house, bound them, take them away just because they want to get some jewelry or a few bucks?" said Joseph Stanley, who works nearby.

Cleveland police say Richard Kovachik opened the door and two or three men pushed themselves inside, beat the 83-year-old man and his 80-year old wife, and then duct taped them up while the suspects robbed the couple for a bank card.

Then the suspects fled the scene, taking the couple's Chevy Malibu, with Maragart Kovachik in bound in the trunk.

"It's sad, it's a shame," said Cheryl McCoy, who lives around the block. "We all look out for each other, we have a lot of elderly ladies that live on our street, we help out, and we watch each other."

The police report says they tracked the men trying to use the card at an east side Marathon ATM. A block away, outside Wolf's Den, police found the stolen car near East 83rd Street and Cedar Avenue and a shaken, but stable woman still inside.

"It was such a horrible thing, I thought that it was a vengeance thing," said their neighbor and church friend Joanna Somerville. Members of their church family at Blessed Trinty Parish say they've visited the couple at Fairview Hospital, where they're badly beaten, but they worry those won't be the only scars.

"Emotionally it's hard to get over those sorts of things. I'm on my way out to pick up a couple of cards," said Somerville. "Just to let them know that we truly love them."

Friends tell Channel 3 News it's hard to say when the Kovachiks might be released. They say the couple is active for their ages, and would never be described as "feeble."

Cleveland police are still investigating, using evidence from a witness to help them find the men responsible. No arrests or detailed suspect descriptions have been released.

'Ding-dong-ditch' prank turns into alleged assault

SHAKER HEIGHTS -- What started out as a teen prank turned into a vicious attack. Now, a Shaker Heights man could face assault charges.

"Ding-dong-ditching" is when someone runs up to a door, rings the doorbell, and then runs away.

That's what police say a group of teens was doing Sunday night, when one of the neighbors on Cheshire Street decided to fight back.

"It was very unfortunate to see because this doesn't take place here," says Pam Cox, who lives on Cheshire.

On Sunday night, she had her front door open when she heard commotion.

"I came out to the front but that's when I discovered a group of kids and that's unusual here on this street," says Cox.

Cheshire is typically quiet. But that night, police say a group of teens were running up to certain homes and ringing the doorbell.

When the teens stepped onto one particular porch to ring a man's doorbell, he was ready and waiting for them.

"I noticed a young lady going up to the porch to speak with him," says Cox, "And the next thing I seen, him just swinging some object at her and her face is just covered in blood."

Bloodstains still spatter the sidewalk.

"She was hit in the bridge of her nose and I believe it was with an air pump," says the 14-year-old girl's father.

The father -- who didn't want to be identified -- tells us she's out of the hospital but has to have surgery for her injuries on Wednesday.

"She still has swelling in her face and pain in her nose," he tells us.

The man -- who police aren't identifying until official charges are filed -- told them he was assaulted by the teens.

Shaker Heights Police handed the case over to the prosecutor. He will now decide who will face charges and which charges to file.

To the girl's father, the incident should have never gotten this far.

"Even if they did ring a doorbell, it's still no excuse to hit a young girl."

Blog | Is your Starbucks a high-calorie "bomb"?

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

You can get black coffee from Starbucks and drink a few calories or one of their "frou-frou" drinks and have a caloric meal.

I don't drink coffee but you will see me in Starbucks almost daily getting a mocha frappuccino a "frou-frou" drink. It's what's for breakfast/lunch, considering my working hours.

I have no interest in stoking a Starbucks versus Dunkin' Donuts coffee war here, although I must admit I prefer Krispy Kreme donuts to Dunkin' Donuts. But I was amazed to hear that the difference between the coffees is not so much the price but the taste.

That battle aside, I always knew my Starbucks addiction -- now full-blown since I went cold-turkey on my Mickey D's Sweet Tea addiction in January -- was calorie-laden. But until now, I never wanted to know exactly how many calories I was consuming.

Well, I looked, as the announcement that Starbucks will start posting its calorie counts on its menu boards June 25.

You will see how many calories are in your favorite drinks. For some, it will be sticker shock.

For example, a grande, black Pike Place roast coffee has five calories. A grande Sweetened Iced Coffee with 2 percent milk contains 120 calories. And a grande Skinny Mocha has 140 calories.

A grande Iced Caffe Mocha contains 320 calories and a grande Vanilla Bean Creme Frappuccino has 400 calories.

And my drink? Just under 500 calories for a venti mocha frappuccino.

Double yikes!

I guess "Americans" are demanding more healthful options, even as they eat out more often. Americans amass about one-third of their calories from eating out -- roughly twice as many as in the 1970s, says Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Now, I am certainly American but when I want to pick up food from a take-out or sit down for a quick meal in a restaurant, I am not looking for healthy but for tasty.

I almost always resist the pastry cases at Starbucks, except once in a very great while I will get a slice of banana/chocolate chip pound cake.

And despite my crazy work schedule, I don't indulge in fast food or take-out as nearly as much as other people I know.

I am also the "Splenda Queen," having given up sugar in my cups of hot tea. But they don't make Starbucks mocha frappuccinos with Splenda.

But for those of us who indulge at Starbucks, we'll just have to drink less if we want to cut back on the calories. I will start with ordering only a grande size on Wednesday.

Investigator: Cops on Castro's block 1,099 times

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 18 Juni 2013 | 10.49

CLEVELAND -- Police responded to Ariel Castro's block on Seymour Avenue about twice a week, on average, during the decade Castro is accused of holding three women and his young daughter hostage, according to call logs.

From the time Michelle Knight went missing in August 2002 until her discovery, along with Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Berry's daughter in May, police received 1,099 calls from people living on Seymour Avenue.

Thirty-five of those calls concerned the home directly next door to Castro, the logs show. Another 37 calls came from another house three doors down.

Police responded twice to calls at Castro's home. Cuyahoga County Sheriff's deputies also knocked on his door three times, trying to serve domestic violence papers.

Castro was not home during those visits. He has pleaded not guilty to a 329-count indictment charging him with aggravated murder of a fetus, rape, kidnapping and other crimes.

"We do have calls relative to domestic violence, smash-and-grabs for cars, thefts," said City Councilman Brian Cummins.

There were also a good number of calls for fights and shootings, the logs show.

Cleveland Police have fiercely defended their investigation of the missing women, saying they searched just about everything they could search, legally.

Police also say they never received any calls of anyone reporting suspect activity at Castro's home.

City utility workers also visited the Seymour Avenue block on numerous occasions.

Cleveland Public Power normally checks residential power use monthly, meaning employees would have visited Castro's home about 120 times over 10 years.

The Cleveland Division of Water reads meters every three months. That means they would have checked Castro's meter about 40 times.

Both of those readings can be done from the outside of the home.

But Channel 3 News has learned that a cable television worker went inside Castro's home within the last two years. A technician told the Investigator Tom Meyer that they had to switch out Castro's cable box.

Aurora Marti has lived on the street for 47 years.

"She doesn't blame the police for not finding out these women were there earlier because she feels there wasn't evidence or reason police would believe that he would have done this," said Cummins, interpreting for Marti, who speaks Spanish.

No. Ridgeville | Protests at council over kitten shootings

DOWNLOAD OUR FREE WKYC APPS

NORTH RIDGEVILLE -- Animal rights groups Rescue Me Ohio, Ohio SPCA and Alley Cat Allies peacefully protested at Monday's North Ridgeville City Council meeting.

Rescue Me Ohio protested the shooting deaths of five feral kittens a week ago by the North Ridgeville Police Department's Humane Officer.

The police chief said the humane officer "acted appropriately" and he will not be disciplined.

Alley Cat Allies, the nation's largest advocacy group for cats, will present a petition with more than 27,000 signatures calling for an immediate end to all "euthanasia" of cats in North Ridgeville.

The petition to Mayor G. David Gillock calls on the mayor to issue an immediate order halting the "euthanasia" of cats by Humane Officers and to meet with Alley Cat Allies to discuss more humane measures for feral cats, including community-supported humane alternatives, like Trap-Neuter-Return.

Paul Berry, executive director of Alley Cat Allies, led the protest.
