Strongsville: Teachers vote to ratify new contract

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 28 April 2013 | 10.49

STRONGSVILLE -- Members of the Strongsville Education Association (SEA) met at Strongsville High School where they voted to ratify a contract.

One teacher says they're expected to return to school Tuesday, allowing substitute teachers a day to gather their things from classrooms.

SEA President Tracy Linscott says the vote in support of the deal was "overwhelming."

The meeting lasted just over 2 hours Saturday evening.

After eight weeks on the picket line, the tentative deal was reached Friday between SEA and the Strongsville Board of Education.

"The past eight weeks have been difficult, but the healing process begins today," said David Frazee, BOE president after negotiations Friday.

The Strongsville School Board is expected to take a vote Sunday to finalize the deal.

Tracy Linscott, President of SEA, was confident teachers would accept the deal prior to the vote.

Details of the deal have not been released.

SEA represents nearly 385 highly qualified classroom teachers, guidance counselors and special education interventionists in the Strongsville City School District.

Sheriff: Bodies in Lake Erie appear to be missing kayakers

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 27 April 2013 | 10.49

MARBLEHEAD --  The Erie County Sheriff's Office says it appears two bodies pulled from Lake Erie today are those of a father and daughter last seen kayaking earlier this month.

The coroner will have to perform tests to positively identify the remains.

The man's body was pulled from the lake Friday afternoon near the Cedar Point breakwall.  The girl's body was found mid-morning about six miles offshore from the City of Huron.

Petty Officer Lauren Laughlin says the Coast Guard station at Marblehead was called at 11 a.m. and located the girl's body. It was brought ashore at the Shelby Street Pier.

Deputy Chief Jared Oliver with the Erie County Sheriff's Department says they believe the body is that of 12 year old Viola Francis based on clothing and jewelry on the body.

Viola and her father Jonathan were last seen when they went kayaking in Sandusky Bay on April 6.   The kayaks washed ashore in Ottawa County the next day.  The two did not have life jackets.

The Erie County Coroner says that early indication on the cause of death is drowning with secondary hypothermia.

Browns draft cornerback in 3rd round

Berea -- After not having a second round selection the Browns went defense with their only pick on Friday night.

With the 68th overall pick in the 3rd-round of the NFL Draft the Browns selected Leon McFadden, a cornerback out of San Diego St.

The 22 year-old is a three-time all-Mountain West Conference first-team selection.  At 5-10, 193lbs with just average speed he is considered by many to be a talented all-around athlete that could make an immediate impact in the NFL.

McFadden was recruited as a wide receiver but moved to cornerback where he made 188 career tackles, 3 sacks, 47 pass breakups and 8 interceptions while starting 45 of the 51 games in which he played in college.

Many Cleveland fans were disappointed when the Browns passed on CB Dee Milliner in the first round, because the Browns have such a need at cornerback.  With the pick of McFadden they have addressed the position.  The Inglewood, California native will have to work on his consistency and technique as a tackler at the next level.

Browns General Manager Michael Lombardi said McFadden has starting ability but it will be up to the coaches.  He can play inside and outside.  McFadden said he was surprised the Browns drafted him because he did not have much contact with the team before the draft.  Lombardi said the Browns didn't consider a Quarterback with their 3rd-round pick because they are more focused on trying to improve their secondary, defensive-line and offensive line.  The Browns have not selected an offensive lineman yet, so that could be a hint of what is to come tomorrow.

Senate deal reached on FAA furlough bill

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 26 April 2013 | 10.49

The Senate has passed a bill to end furloughs that have disrupted air travel across the USA.

Approval of the measure came without dissent. The House could take up the measure as early as Friday. The legislation allows the Federal Aviation Administration to shift $253 million from other accounts to eliminate the furloughs and avoid closing 149 towers at small airports.

The FAA warned travelers about staffing challenges around en route centers at Cleveland, Washington, New York, and in regional control centers for Chicago, San Antonio, Southern California and Tampa, and specific towers for the New York-area and in Southwest Florida. Delays are expected in the New York area, Chicago O'Hare, Tampa and the regional Southwest.

The FAA says about 40% of flight delays nationwide this week can be blamed on furloughs.

RELATED: Furlough-fueled delays frustrate passengers
READ MORE: Flight delays and finger-pointing follow furloughs

On Wednesday, there were 863 flight delays based on staffing, and another 2,132 for weather or other reasons, according to the FAA, which tracks traffic delays but not taxiing and other airfield delays. The worst hit areas on Wednesday were New York, Washington, Cleveland, Jacksonville and Los Angeles.

On Tuesday, 1,025 delays were blamed on staffing and 975 on other causes, according to FAA. On Monday, 1,200 delays were blamed on staffing, with 1,400 on weather and other causes, according to the FAA.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, had suggested shifting money from an estimated $400 million in unused funds from a grant program for airport construction to fund the controllers.

She said taking $253 million from the fund would avoid "disastrous" furloughs and would allow 149 towers to remain open rather than closing June 15, as the FAA plans.

"The program has sufficient money to support this effort," said Collins, who serves on the Appropriations subcommittee that funds the FAA. "Our bill should be recognized as a one-time solution in order to avert these serious national impacts."

Momentum has been building to fix the FAA, even if a compromise for the rest of the government remains unclear.

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., each supported a solution for the FAA, at a breakfast organized by the Christian Science Monitor. McCain said resolving funding for the military is also important.

"I'm glad to see all the focus on whether we have to wait longer or whether there's flight delays, but I wish to God the Congress of the United States would focus on the threats to our nation's security," McCain said.

"I certainly would be open to an FAA solution because the Transportation Department is under an undue amount of immediate squeeze," Schumer said.

The White House signaled Wednesday that a remedy just for FAA was possible, even though the administration would prefer a solution for all government spending.

"Now, if Congress wants to address specifically the problems caused by the sequester with the FAA, we would be open to looking at that," White House spokesman Jay Carney said. "But that would be a Band-Aid measure."

The FAA must save $637 million by Sept. 30, under federal budget cutting. About $220 million would come from furloughs, $25 million from tower closures and the rest from curbing training, travel and information technology spending, according to the department.

US Airways CEO Doug Parker said he's "hopeful" that the outcry from the traveling public on the controller furloughs has begun to prod lawmakers to find a solution.

"It appears to be having some effect on our elected officials," Parker said Wednesday afternoon at US Airways' media day event in suburban Phoenix.

"This is a situation that is highly unfortunate," he adds. "It's untenable. It makes no sense. It's not fair to flying public. It's not fair to our employees."

Parker said his own flight from New York to Phoenix this week was delayed by about an hour in fallout from the controller staffing issue.

Parker says he was particularly dismayed upon hearing a deplaning passenger blame US Airways for the delay despite what Parker called a "heroic effort" by the flight crew to get back on schedule.

"That's not right," Parker said. "Our people did their job. Our government needs to do its job. Hopefully they've gotten the message now" and will resolve the problem.

Frustrated passengers also called for a solution to be agreed on in Washington.

Evan Shenkin, a New York resident, was scheduled to fly from Boston Logan Airport to JFK on Wednesday at 4:35 p.m. He boarded the plane but at 6:10 p.m. the captain informed the passengers that there would be another 2 and 1/2 delay and that they would have to disembark.

He switched over to an 8 pm flight from Boston to LaGuardia. At 7:30 p.m., that flight was pushed back to 9 p.m. He switched flights for a second time to one that had been scheduled to take off at 7 p.m. but was delayed to 8:30 p.m.

The Delta crew blamed the delays on the furloughs, he said.

"This is one of the worst flying experiences ever," he said.

Deborah Riegel, a motivational speaker, was also trying to get home to New York Wednesday night on a Delta flight. But there was a ground stop at LaGuardia so she sat on a runway at Atlanta's airport for an hour. That was after a 30-minute delay before boarding.

"It was inconvenient," she said. But more importantly, "air traffic controllers provide a critical public safety service," she said.

2013 NFL Draft: Browns select Barkevious Mingo with first pick

A player whose name starts with "bark" will now play before the fans of the Dawg Pound.

The Browns have selected linebacker Barkevious Mingo from LSU with their first pick (6th overall) in the NFL Draft.

The Browns chose Mingo over Alabama CB Dee Milliner who was still on the board at the time of the pick.  Milliner went three picks later at number nine to the New York Jets.

Mingo skipped his senior year to enter the NFL Draft.

A short time after being selected, Mingo talked to reporters.  He said being drafted was a lifelong dream and he hoped to have a career that would take him to Canton and the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day.

He also told reporters he had a great visit with the Browns and he fell in love with the City of Cleveland.

He also sent out these tweets:

2013 NFL draft: Pick-by-pick analysis

Pick-by-pick results and analysis for Round 1:

Pick in Round 1; (overall pick); team; selection

1 (1) Chiefs: Eric Fisher, OT Central Michigan

Analysis: The new MAC daddy, Fisher becomes the highest-drafted player ever from the Mid-American Conference and first non-quarterback at No. 1 since T Jake Long went to the Miami Dolphins in 2008. Though he didn't typically face top-shelf competition, he more than held his own against Iowa and Michigan State last season before wowing scouts at the Senior Bowl. He might have just a bit more upside and nastiness than SEC-trained Luke Joeckel. If the Chiefs keep franchise-tagged OT Branden Albert, they'll enter the season with a solid set of bookends. If Albert is dealt, Donald Stephenson could step into the lineup unless Kansas City pursues a free agent such as Tyson Clabo.

PHOTO GALLERY: Every pick in the first round

2 (2) Jaguars: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M

Analysis:New Jags GM Dave Caldwell seemingly takes the best player on his board - and two tackles top the draft for the first time ever - rather than addressing an anemic pass rush or spotty play under center or any number of areas on a deficient roster. Joeckel becomes an immediate friend to embattled third-year QB Blaine Gabbert and RB Maurice Jones-Drew, who's coming off a season-ending foot injury. With experience in pro-style and spread offenses for the Aggies, Joeckel should have no problem adjusting to whatever new Jacksonville offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch throws at him. The former bodyguard of Ryan Tannehill and 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel will likely start on the right side in 2013 but could switch to the blind side at any time, perhaps in 2014 if LT Eugene Monroe isn't re-signed.

3 (3) Dolphins (from Raiders): Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon

Analysis: Oakland GM Reggie McKenzie ships out the first Round 1 pick of his tenure - Oakland lost last year's first first rounder (and this year's second rounder) in the 2011 Carson Palmer deal made by ex-coach Hue Jackson - to stockpile some much needed picks to replenish his roster. And with five of the top 82 selections at the start of the night, Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland had the ammo to move up and gave McKenzie the 12th and 42nd choices in return. Miami had the ammo to move up. Miami spurns the opportunity to replace departed Jake Long to take Jordan, a rangy pass rusher who used to play tight end. He could stand to add a little weight, but he should be able to focus his talents as a pass-rush specialist out of the chute - much as Aldon Smith did for the 49ers in 2011 - behind starting defensive ends Jared Odrick and Cameron Wake, who will be happy to see fewer double teams with Jordan on the opposite flank.

4 (4) Eagles: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma

Analysis: A converted tight end and quarterback, Johnson has rare athleticism for his position and may wind up as the best tackle of this draft in a few years. He should fit seamlessly into new coach Chip Kelly's high-velocity offense, which demands great movement skills from its linemen. In Johnson and Jason Peters, the Eagles probably have the most mobile tackle tandem in the NFL provided Peters' Achilles' is fully healed. Expect RT Todd Herremans to shift back to guard, his primary position from 2006 to 2010.

5 (5) Lions: Ziggy Ansah, DE, BYU

Analysis: The Lions lost both of last season's starting tackles (Jeff Backus, retirement/Gosder Cherilus, free agency) and defensive ends (Kyle Vanden Bosch, released/Cliff Avril, free agency) but don't get a shot at one of the draft's elite tackles. So they take Ansah to bolster their pass rush. It helps that the Detroit coaching staff worked with the Ghana native during Senior Bowl week. He's extremely raw and has a very limited football background. But he enters a situation where he shouldn't see very many double teams if Lions DTs Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley continue to crush pockets from the inside. But D-line guru Jim Washburn has a big job molding Ansah into an NFL-ready player.

6 (6) Browns: Barkevious Mingo, DE, LSU

Analysis: The Browns opt for a pass rusher rather than upgrade their secondary. Mingo also needs to bulk up, and AFC North teams will doubtless run at him at every opportunity in 2013. But he'll also put some stress on Joe Flacco, Ben Roethlisberger and Andy Dalton and gives Cleveland a nice young duo of edge players along with free agent addition Paul Kruger. If the Browns keep the heat on enemy QBs, their shortcomings in coverage won't be as glaring. However, Mingo better pan out since the franchise's new regime opted for him rather than a deal that might have recouped the second-round pick lost when WR Josh Gordon arrived via last year's supplemental draft.

7 (7) Cardinals: Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina

Analysis: Arizona needed tackle help, but Cooper is a very nice consolation prize and should solidify an O-line that will also be better with T Levi Brown back from a triceps injury that cost him the 2012 season. Cooper ought to keep new QB Carson Palmer fairly clean while providing daylight for recently signed RB Rashard Mendenhall.

8 (8) Rams (from Bills): Tavon Austin, WR West Virginia

Analysis: The Rams clearly entered the night needing wideout and safety help but weren't in position to get a prime prospect at No. 16 or 22. So they jump up to Buffalo's spot to get Austin. The dynamic playmaker only weighs 175 pounds, but typifies a new NFL which puts a premium on speed, versatility and the ability to play in space. Austin should immediately fill the shoes of departed Danny Amendola and serve as QB Sam Bradford's top target. Austin can work out of the slot, backfield or in the return game. He should be a terror in the Edward Jones Dome. The 49ers and Seahawks won't be the only tough outs in the NFC West.

9 (9) Jets: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama

Analysis: Though they had two first-round picks, the Jets missed out on Austin and the top pass rushers, who all would've filled obvious gaps. But they had another void after dealing all-pro CB Darrelle Revis to the Buccaneers, and coach Rex Ryan can never have enough corners. Milliner will team with Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson to give the Jets another tough trio to combat Tom Brady, and also a revitalized Dolphins passing game in the AFC East. On the downside, Milliner will be saddled with unfair comparisons to Revis from the moment he dons green and white.

10 (10) Titans: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama

Analysis: Support QB Jake Locker's development or address the worst defense in franchise history? The Titans opt for the former, and Warmack - regarded in some circles as the draft's best pure football player - should only flourish under the tutelage of head coach Mike Munchak, a Hall of Fame guard himself. The additions of Warmack and free agent Andy Levitre (along with all-pro caliber LT Michael Roos) immediately thrust Tennessee's O-line into the league's upper echelon. Perhaps it again makes Chris Johnson a 2,000-yard back.

11 (11) Chargers: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama

Analysis: A once-stacked San Diego roster fell into disrepair in the final years under deposed general manager A.J. Smith. None of the draft's elite blockers fell into the hands of new GM Tom Telesco, but Fluker is no slouch. He probably doesn't have the feet to protect QB Philip Rivers' blind side, but he should hold down the fort on the right side for a decade. Rivers has committed 47 turnovers over the past two seasons, and former coach Norv Turner laid much of the blame at the feet of a subpar O-line.

12 (12) Raiders (from Dolphins): D.J. Hayden, CB, Houston

Analysis: The initial first-round call of the McKenzie era finally reaches the podium, and the GM goes with the fast-rising Cougar. Hayden ran a sub-4.4 40 at his pro day after he was nearly killed by a practice collision last year that sheared a blood vessel in his heart. He joins a secondary that hasn't been the same since Nnamdi Asomugha left after the 2010 season. Hayden is charged with defending Peyton Manning and Rivers as a rookie, but you can bet he's more than happy to be alive for such opportunities.

13 (13) Jets (from Buccaneers): Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri

Analysis: This is the only selection the Jets acquired from the Bucs in this draft as part of the Revis swap (they'll likely pick up a third rounder in 2014). And new GM John Idzik makes a Mike Tannenbaum-esque move as New York takes a defensive lineman in Round 1 for the third consecutive year (Muhammad Wilkerson, 2011; Quinton Coples 2012). Richardson seemed to project as a better fit in a 4-3 defense, and this could signal more four-man fronts for a unit that will be more closely monitored by head coach Rex Ryan after the loss of coordinator Mike Pettine to Buffalo. The bigger takeaway could be the decision by Idzik not to add offensive firepower for regressing QB Mark Sanchez, who watched his top tailback, tight end and both starting guards leave in free agency.

14 (14) Panthers: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah

Analysis: The Carolina D-line is suddenly scary with pass rushing demons Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy flanking Lotulelei, who could also suck up blocks in front of defensive rookie of the year MLB Luke Kuechly. Matt Ryan, Drew Brees and Josh Freeman won't like this pick as the heat will be coming from every direction. Had Lotulelei's heart been pumping at full efficiency at the combine, he might've gone off the board much earlier.

15 (15) Saints: Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas

Analysis: A year after gaining an NFL record 7,474 yards, the Saints surrendered a record 7,042 in their Bountygate-besmirched 2012 season. But rather than tinker with a front seven that's converting to a 3-4 scheme, New Orleans goes for the draft's best safety in Vaccaro. He has range to cover tight ends like Tony Gonzalez and Greg Olsen and won't be afraid to put a lick on the Steven Jacksons and Doug Martins of the world. The Saints seemed set at safety with former first-rounder Malcolm Jenkins and two-time Pro Bowler Roman Harper. With no Round 2 pick - more bounty fallout - Vaccaro will probably be the only immediate starter New Orleans gets in the draft.

16 (16) Bills (from Rams): E.J. Manuel, QB Florida State

Analysis: Manuel becomes the first passer off the board, bypassing the more-hyped Geno Smith and Ryan Nassib, the former Orange quarterback who seemed a natural to reunite with ex-Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone in Buffalo. But Manuel has all the skills a modern offensive coordinator would want: arm strength, mobility and smarts. But other than RB C.J. Spiller and WR Stevie Johnson, the Bills don't have many weapons to assist Manuel, though that could change Friday given they now own two second rounders. GM Buddy Nix might have more time to expand the arsenal before Manuel even plays given Buffalo can roll with Kevin Kolb this season while the rookie adapts to the pro level.

17 (17) Steelers: Jarvis Jones, LB, Georgia

Analysis: This seemed like a natural fit assuming the Steelers were comfortable with Jones' poor offseason workouts and medical (stenosis) issues, and apparently they were. Jones had 14.5 sacks for Georgia in 2012 but will now be charged with replacing James Harrison. Jones should enable LaMarr Woodley to remain effective on the left side assuming he rebounds after a disappointing 2012 season.

18 (18) 49ers (from Cowboys): Eric Reid, S, LSU

Analysis: The Niners entered the night with a league-high 13 picks but couldn't possibly use them all on a roster already laden with talent. So they surrender a third-rounder to Dallas in order to jump for the LSU star, who will try to take over at free safety after all-pro Dashon Goldson took the money and ran to Tampa in free agency. A great scenario for Reid, who merely has to play within himself on one of the league's toughest defenses.

19 (19) Giants: Justin Pugh, OT, Syracuse

Analysis: Maybe not a buzzy choice, but it's hard to question the track record of GM Jerry Reese. Pugh played tackle for the Orange but may start out at guard in New York. The Giants' O-line has been getting long in the tooth, and Pugh offers a long-term (if not immediate) solution. He'll have excellent mentors in OL David Diehl and OG Chris Snee, either of whom might be eventually displaced by Pugh. Starting LG Kevin Boothe, who recently got just a one-year deal, should also have his antennae up.

20 (20) Bears: Kyle Long, OG, Oregon

Analysis: Another member of the Long clan enters the NFL. Kyle is the son of Hall of Famer Howie Long and brother of Rams DE Chris Long. Kyle eschewed football for baseball as a youngster before resurfacing on the gridiron with the Ducks. Jay Cutler's protection issues - 148 sacks suffered in 56 regular-season starts with the Bears - could be a thing of the past since Chicago has also signed LT Jermon Bushrod, G Matt Slauson and TE Martellus Bennett, who's also an excellent blocker.

BEDFORD -- Cleveland Browns linebacker Quentin Groves has apologized following his citation on a soliciting charge stemming from what police called a prostitution sting.

Groves said in a statement Wednesday that he let a lot of people down, starting with his family, and he told fans, the Browns and the city of Cleveland he was sorry for putting himself in this situation.

Groves entered a no contest plea to disorderly conduct in Bedford Municipal Court Tuesday following his citation by police in neighboring Orange on April 17.

Court records show Groves also paid $365 as part of the case. The Browns declined comment.

Police say Groves was taken into custody at a hotel after arranging in a phone call for sex acts with an undercover officer.

Crews dismantle tavern wall in search for Jimmy Hoffa

OLD BROOKLYN -- The mystery of Jimmy Hoffa's disappearance has captivated many for the past 38 years. Is there a chance the former Teamsters boss has been buried in Cleveland all this time?

Over the years there have been frequent searches for Hoffa including one as recent as last fall in the Detroit area.

Today the search turned to the site of Wexler's Tavern on State Road in Cleveland's Old Brooklyn neighborhood where the new owner and now possibly the FBI may be interested.

In the tavern's basement, a wall is being dismantled in an effort to determine if this was Hoffa's final resting place.

With every swing of the sledgehammer, Doug Graziano hopes he is getting closer to solving the mystery. "This is the claim and if its Hoffa that would be right on," said Graziano.

Wexler's previous owner, Lou Gentile, and his then business partner found bones wrapped in red-butcher paper inside the wall 25 years ago when they were renovating the tavern.  The bones were neatly wrapped in seven football-shaped packages.  Gentile says he called police but officers instructed him to throw the bones away.

"I'm thinking, wow. These are human bones. And then all the history of the tavern came flooding back, that there was a connection with Jimmy Hoffa, and the people who were around the tavern at the time," Gentile said.

When Doug Graziano, the new owner heard the story he was intrigued. He was even more fascinated when while cutting out a panel in the wall he found a a matchbook from the Palm Desert Lodge in California. The lodge was dubbed  "the house Jimmy Hoffa and the Teamsters built."

During Wednesday's search, two bone fragments were found. They will be tested to determine if they are of human origin.

Jimmy Hoffa disappeared in 1975.

Hackers compromise AP Twitter account

LONDON  --  Hackers have compromised the main Twitter account of The Associated Press, sending out an erroneous tweet about an attack at the White House.

The tweet, which said that there had been two explosions at the White House and President Barack Obama was injured, came after hackers made repeated attempts to steal the passwords of AP journalists.

The AP said Tuesday that its Twitter account had been suspended following a hack and said it was working to correct the issue.

The cyberattack is the latest in a string targeting international media organizations.

The tweet put out by hackers briefly sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average sharply lower.

Cleveland Weather: Weather tease

April can be such a tease.

After the doldrums of the typical March chill, April's peeks at warmer weather can certainly do a lot to perk up spirits ... until the next front blasts through.

Yet another strong cold front will be coming through tomorrow morning.  This means temperatures will be in the 50s in the morning, but will quickly fall into the 40s for much of the day.

A chance like that doesn't come easily, so rain (and even some rumbles) will be with us as well.

Don't worry... since it is April, the change back to warmer weather will be following quickly.

Tonight:  Clouding up with rain moving in.  Rumbles of thunder possible.  50s

Wednesday: Rain showers. Windy.  50s early, falling into the low 40s by late morning and staying cool for the rest of the day.

Thursday: Partly sunny with scattered showers. Low 50s

Friday: Mostly sunny. Upper 50s/low 60s

Saturday: Partly sunny.  Low 60s

Sunday: Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain showers.  Mid 60s

Monday: Partly sunny to mostly cloudy with isolated showers.  Upper 60s

Tuesday:  Partly sunny.  Near 70

Akron: 'Too fat to tan' results in refund

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 23 April 2013 | 10.49

AKRON -- Told she was too fat to tan, Kelly McGrevey says she's received an outpouring of support for big girls and everyone fighting discrimination.

On Monday, Aloha Tanning confirmed the salon refunded McGrevey's credit card. An employee told Channel 3 News that the Norton salon processed a refund Sunday.

Related article: Akron: Woman told she's 'too fat to tan'

McGrevey said a credit has not yet shown up on her account, but she's glad to hear the salon changed its response. "Ultimately, that's what I wanted, was my money back," said McGrevey.

McGrevey had taken steps to file a discrepancy report with her credit card company. Now she'll wait while a refund may be issued.

She said she's been overwhelmed by the international attention her story has received. She had the few negative responses have been far outnumbered by others who praise her efforts to stand up herself.

"I'm not really the person to stick up for yourself anyways. That was like totally out of character for me to do that," said McGrevey. "I've heard from quite a few people that have thanked me because they have had bad experiences."

"I kind of feel good that I spoke up, not just for myself, but for other people that maybe weren't so brave," she said.

"I just want to say thank you to all my friends and my family, and all the people that I don't know that have been so supportive. All the facebook messages that I've received, the phone calls that I've gotten, I just want to say thank you so much," she said.

Another salon saw Channel 3 News and reached out to McGrevey through facebook, offering to honor her month-long tanning package at Tanner's Tanning in Akron. She can use any bed she chooses there, the owner said.

"It's just disgusting. It's discrimination," said Jackie Gamble, who operates three tanning salons. "I've busted an acrylic on the bed and I weigh 120 pounds. It really just depends where you put pressure."

"Seventy dollars, it's a lot of money to somebody, and if it made her feel better that I could give her something, than I'd like to make her feel better," said Gamble.

A contract attorney Channel 3 News contacted says the Ohio Revised Code allows you three days to rescind certain contracts, like those for gyms, dating services, weight loss programs or health spas under the Prepaid Entertainment Contracts Act.

You are entitled to a pro-rated refund if you've used the service.

Joseph Triscaro with DeMarco & Triscaro, Ltd., a Solon based law firm, says the best advice is to read the contact you're signing.

If you are signing a contract, pay special attention to provisions, like the right of rescission. It should outline how to void your contract and get your money back.

Default provisions should tell you what happens if the business can't hold their end of the bargain. Read this, and you'll know your options.

McGrevey says she never signed a contract with Aloha Tanning.

RTA Red Line S-Curve Project begins

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 22 April 2013 | 10.49

CLEVELAND -- The Greater Cleveland RTA will begin a $7 million restoration project on the Red Line's S-Curve today. The project is expected to be completed on June 7, 2013.

Until then, the Red Line will be closed near the restoration site. Buses will serve customers in the area between the West 117th Street Rapid Station and the West Blvd.-Cudell Rapid Station.

"This is a vital upgrade to our Red Line rail system focusing on infrastructure, drainage, rails, ties, ballasts and overhead power system," said Joe Calabrese, CEO & General Manager, RTA.

If headed downtown from the west side, riders will exit the Red Line at West 117th Street, and take a bus to the West Blvd.-Cudell Station to continue along the Red Line route.

RTA says the work may delay riders' commute time by a few minutes.

The section of track being upgraded is nearly 3,000 feet long. It was originally built in 1955 as part of the Windermere to the Airport Red Line.

Much of the drainage system in that area of the track is not doing its job. It will be cleaned and, parts of it, replaced

For more information on the work being done, visit www.riderta.com.

He did not address his ownership of the Browns.

He did not address issues regarding ESPNCleveland.com's report that the NFL may require Haslam to step down from day-to-day operations of the Cleveland Browns as the investigation continues.

Haslam anounced in advance that he would not take any questions from the media at this press conference.

But when a reporter asked if he was going to take the Browns to the Super Bowl, Haslam laughed and said "Eventually, yes."

Home video: Rapid gunfire leads to manhunt's end

Darren McCollester/Getty Images

BOSTON  -- A neighbor in Watertown captures on video the rapid volley of gunfire that would eventually send the daylong manhunt toward its rapid conclusion.

Below is a timeline of key moments related to the search for the Boston Marathon bombing suspects as the ordeal unfolded.  It is based on reports from the Massachusetts governor, the Middlesex County district attorney, Massachusetts State Police and Boston police.

- At 5:10 p.m. Thursday, investigators of the bombings release photographs and video of two suspects. They ask for the public's help in identifying the men.

- Around 10:20 p.m., shots are fired on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, just outside Boston.

- At 10:30 p.m., an MIT campus police officer who was responding to a disturbance is found shot multiple times in his vehicle, apparently in a confrontation with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects. He is later pronounced dead.

- Shortly afterward, two armed men reportedly carjack a Mercedes SUV in Cambridge. A man who was in the vehicle is held for about a half hour and then released unharmed at a gas station on Memorial Drive in Cambridge.

- Police soon pursue the carjacked vehicle in Watertown, just west of Cambridge.

- Some kind of explosive devices are thrown from the vehicle in an apparent attempt to stop police. The carjackers and police exchange gunfire. A transit police officer is seriously injured. One suspect, later identified as Suspect No. 1 in the marathon bombings, is critically injured and later pronounced dead.

- Authorities launch a manhunt for the other suspect.

- Around 1 a.m. Friday, gunshots and explosions are heard in Watertown. Dozens of police officers and FBI agents converge on a Watertown neighborhood. A helicopter circles overhead.

- Around 4:30 a.m., Massachusetts state and Boston police tell people living in that section of eastern Watertown to stay in their homes. They identify the carjackers as the same men suspected in the marathon bombings. Overnight, police also release a photograph of a man believed to be Suspect No. 2 wearing a gray hoodie-style sweatshirt. The image apparently is from surveillance video taken at a gas station.

- Around 5:50 a.m. authorities urge residents in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge, Arlington and the Allston-Brighton neighborhoods of Boston to stay indoors. All mass transit is shut down.

- Around 6:35 a.m., The Associated Press reports that the bomb suspects are from a Russian region near Chechnya and lived in the United States for at least a year.

- Around 6:45 a.m., The Associated Press identifies the surviving Boston bomb suspect as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, who has been living in Cambridge.

- Around 8 a.m., Boston's police commissioner says all of Boston must stay in their homes as the search for the surviving suspect in the bombings continues.

- Around 8:40 a.m., a U.S. law enforcement official and the uncle of the suspects confirm that the name of the slain suspect is Tamerlan Tsarnaev, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's older brother.

- Around 10:20 a.m., Connecticut State Police say a car believed to be linked to Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been recovered in Boston. They initially call it a Honda CRV, but authorities later say it was a Honda Civic.

- Around 10:35 a.m., the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth says it closed its campus and ordered an evacuation after confirming that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is registered there. The school says it closed the campus "out of an abundance of caution" as the search continued.

- Around 11:30 a.m., Massachusetts State Police explain that the brothers suspected in the bombings were in the Honda when they carjacked the Mercedes SUV. For a while, each drove one of the two vehicles, but then ditched the Honda and reunited in the Mercedes.

- Around 12:35 p.m., state police in Watertown say officers are searching door-to-door but still have not found the bombing suspect.

- Around 6:30 p.m., Massachusetts Gov. Patrick Deval announces that mass transit is resuming and the "stay indoors" order is being lifted even though one suspect remains on the lam. State police say that suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, fled on foot and there is indication he has a vehicle. They believe he is still in the state because of his ties to the area.

-Around the time the order is lifted, a flurry of gunfire breaks out in the same community that was being searched. Law enforcement officials locate Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in a boat parked behind a home.

-Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is taken into custody by police at approximately 8:45 p.m. Spontaneous applause breaks out among police and onlookers surrounding the scene and residents take to the streets to cheer police.

Boston bombing suspect captured alive

WATERTOWN, MA --   Police cornered and captured Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Friday night.

The Boston Police Department tweeted they had arrested the 19-year-old at about 8:45 p.m.

Tsarnaev's arrest came two hours after Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick ended a Boston-area lockdown early Friday evening after a massive, day-long search of suburban Watertown, which seemingly failed to flush out the teenager.

At about 7 p.m., gunshots erupted in a Watertown residential neighborhood, with Tsarnaev founed in a covered, trailered boat parked along the side of a two story, clapboard home on Franklin Street. He may have been wounded in a early Friday morning firefight with police that killed older brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev - was sitting up in the boat.

Police may have been tipped off by a resident who saw blood on the boat, climbed up a ladder to open the tarp cover, and saw a man. Hundreds of police on the scene surrounded the area, but were approaching the boat with caution because Tsarnaev is believed to be wearing or holding explosive devices.

For most of the day, hundreds of police conducted a methodical, house-to-house sweep in Watertown for Tsarnaev. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26 died after a dramatic car chase and shootout with police during which the more than 200 rounds of ammunition were fired. As they were pursued, the brothers threw several pipe bombs and a grenade at police as they attempted to flee in a carjacked SUV.

Tamerlan, badly wounded, was left at the scene by his younger brother, who apparently backed over him as he sped away in a carjacked Mercedes SUV.

State Police Superintendent Timothy Alben said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev later abandoned the stolen vehicle in Watertown and fled by foot.

Authorities no longer believe there are other accomplices.

"This is a dangerous person, people need to be extremely careful if they even suspect this individual,'' Alben said.

During the overnight and early-morning pursuit of the brothers, a federal official familiar with the case said authorities recovered a handful of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), including one in the possession of Tamerlan Tsarnaev. All of the devices appeared to be homemade explosives, including pipe bombs. Several were detonated by police Friday afternoon.

Police took Tamerlan Tsarnaev to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center following the exchange of gunfire with police at about 1:20 a.m. Friday. Dr. David Schoenfeld said medical personnel tried to revive him. He had multiple gunshot wounds and burn and gaping blast wounds that appeared to have come from an explosive device strapped to his body.

The brothers' acts continue to befuddle authorities, family and friends that know them. Students at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where Dzhokar was a student, say they saw him on campus following Monday's bombings.

lnvestigators have not found any formal links so far to an international terror group.

Dzhokar's escape prompted Gov. Patrick to order the city of Boston and its surrounding suburbs locked down and its residents to remain in their homes for much of Friday. The Boston Red Sox and Bruins postponed Friday night games. Businesses in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge and the Alston and Brighton neighborhoods of Boston were requested to remain closed and residents to remain indoors until the suspect is caught. Massachusetts shut down all mass transit, including buses and trains, in Boston and surrounding suburbs, Kurt Schwartz, director of Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency said.

The Tsarnaev family is believed to have moved to the USA in 2003. They had lived in Kazakhstan for several years after fleeing war-torn Chechnya. Tamerlan attended Bunker Hill Community College in nearby Charlestown as a part-time student for three semesters from 2006 to 2008. He studied accounting.

In an telephone interview from Russian with the Associated Press, the brothers' father, Anzor Tsarnaev, said Dzhokhar is "a true angel" and "an intelligent boy." In subsequent media interviews, he said his sons had been framed for Monday's bombings.

Ruslan Tsarni, an uncle who had not spoken to his brother's sons since December 2005, urged Dzhokhar to turn himself in to authorities. Meeting with reporters Friday outside his home in Montgomery County, MD., Tsani said he believed the brothers may have been recently "radicalized." Tsarni says he was unaware of any military or weapons training they may have received. Tsarni called the brothers "losers" and said they had brought his family shame.

Their names were not known to law enforcement officials before the bombings, which killed three people and wounded 176. Authorities are reviewing the brothers' possible ties to Chechnya - an area of Russia plagued by Islamic insurgency - a law enforcement official who is not authorized to comment publicly told USA TODAY.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is believed to have dropped a backpack laden with explosives at the site of Monday's second explosion. He was pictured wearing a white baseball cap in video images released by the FBI Thursday. His page on the Russian social networking site Vkontakte says he attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, graduating in 2011, the year he won a $2,500 college scholarship from the city of Cambridge. On the website, his world view is described as "Islam" and he says his personal goal is "career and money."

Larry Aaronson, a neighbor and retired history teacher at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, got to know Dzhokhar while taking photos of the high school wrestling team and other school activities.

"It's completely out of his character," Aaronson said of Dzhokhar's alleged role in the bombings. "Everything about him was wonderful. He was completely outgoing, very engaged, he loved the school. He was grateful not to be in Chechnya."

Dzhokhar was not overtly political or religious, Aaronson says. "He spoke and acted like any other high school kid."

Aaronson says he can't reconcile the young man he knows with the characterizations he's seeing in the media. "I cannot do it," he says. "I mean this from the deepest part of my heart: It's not possible it's the same person. It's just not possible."

The manhunt for the marathon bombing suspects turned into hot pursuit late Thursday evening. MIT campus police officer Sean Collier was shot multiple times as he was sitting in his car.

Collier, 26, was later pronounced dead at Massachusetts General Hospital. He had been a campus cop since January 2012 and previously, a civilian employee at the Somerville Police Department.

The suspects carjacked a Mercedes SUV between 12:15 and 12:30 a.m, holding the driver at gunpoint for a half hour before he was shoved from the car unharmed. A federal law enforcement official, who was not authorized to comment publicly, said the men allegedly told the driver that they were the Marathon bombers.

The official said the suspects' allegedly acknowledged their roles in the Marathon bombings to both intimidate the driver and brag about the bombings.

Police found the car and the suspects in Watertown, and pursued them into a residential neighborhood where gunfire was exchanged.

A transit police officer, Richard H. Donohue Jr., 33, was shot once during the firefight. He underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition at Mount Auburn Hospital.

Witnesses report hearing many gunshots.

Massachusetts State Police Superintendent Timothy Alben said Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot by police in a gunfight following a pursuit that began late Thursday night in Cambridge and ended a short time later in Watertown.

Alben said the suspects also threw explosives from the car. The elder Tsarnaev, with an explosive still in his possession, was hit by gunfire, prompting his younger brother to flee in the vehicle. During his getaway he drove over his brother.

Residents, witnesses and media in the area heard at least two large booms.

"I heard sirens, then a ton of gunshots,'' said Adam Healy, 31, a behavioral specialist for autism who lives less than a mile from the scene. "And then I heard an explosion amid the gunshots. After the explosion, the sky lit up."

Dan MacDonald, 40, sitting in a second-story Watertown apartment, said he first heard sirens, then gunshots.

"It was about 10 to 15 shots. then there was an onslaught," he said. "There were 25 to 60 shots within 45 seconds. Then the shots stopped and boom. It was like dynamite."

Alvi Tsarnaev, another uncle of the suspects, said Friday that Tamerlan phoned him Thursday night at about 7 p.m., the first time they had spoken in about two years.

"He said, 'I love you and forgive me,' " said Alvi Tsarnaev, who lives in Montgomery Village, Md. He wasn't seeking forgiveness for the bombing, but asking for forgiveness because he hadn't spoken to him in so long.

"We were not talking for a long time because there were some problems," Alvi Tsarnaev said without elaborating. "We were not happy with each other."

They spoke for about five minutes, he said. Tamerlan, who is Muslim, started out by saying, "Salam Aleikum," an Arabic greeting meaning "peace on you." He then praised his uncle for keeping up with his Muslim prayers.

"He told me he was happy," he said. "He was asking, 'Did you pay your mortgage?' I told him I was trying to pay. I asked him what he was doing. He said, 'I fix cars, I got married, got a baby.'

"Killing innocent people, I cannot forgive that," Alvi Tsarnaev said. "It's crazy. I don't believe it now even. How can I forgive this?"

The Lowell Sun reported that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was a Golden Gloves boxer who told the newspaper that "I like the USA" after winning his first fight in 2004 in Lowell. He fought in the 178-pound novice class.

According to the Sun, Tamerlan and his family moved to the USA in 2003, hoping to start a new life. "America has a lot of jobs. That's something Russia doesn't have. You have a chance to make money here if you are willing to work," he told The Sun.

Haslam: Statement on Pilot Flying J search warrants released

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 19 April 2013 | 10.49

KNOXVILLE -- Federal officials have unsealed the search warrants and affidavits used in Monday's raid on Pilot Flying J headquarters in West Knoxville and filed them in court.

The documents, a 120-page report and a 55-page affidavit, were the items filed. In the affidavit for the search warrant, Robert H. Root, a special agent with the FBI, said the investigation started on May 4, 2011.

It is alleged that a rebate fraud scheme at Pilot Flying J occurred with the knowledge of top executives, including CEO Jimmy Haslam.

Federal agents raided the company headquarters on Monday.

The affidavit says a Pilot Flying J employee told authorities that Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam knew about rebate fraud at the truck stop chain his family owns.

It identifies the employee only as a confidential source. Haslam issued a statement saying the foundation of the company is integrity and pledged to cooperate with the investigation.

The company headquarters was raided Monday by FBI and IRS agents. Pilot Flying J is a private company mostly owned by Haslam, his brother Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and other family members.

It is the nation's No. 1 retailer of diesel fuel, and its customer rebate program with trucking firms is at the center of the investigation.

In response to the court filings, Pilot Flying J CEO/Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam released the following statement Thursday evening:

"I've read the affidavits.  I now understand more clearly the questions the federal investigators are exploring.   "I maintain that the foundation of this company is built on its integrity and that any willful wrongdoing by any employee of this company at any time is intolerable."

"We will continue to cooperate with the federal investigation and continue our own investigation in these allegations."

"I value the relationships we have with our customers, our vendors and our team members across this country and regret that they have to go through this with us, but I trust and believe their faith in this company and its principles has never been misplaced."

Reporter Bobby Allyn with Gannett's The Tennessean, also filed the following story in Knoxville:

Pilot Flying J CEO Jimmy Haslam was in sales meetings where a rebate fraud scheme was discussed, according to a federal search warrant affidavit, which was made public on Thursday.

The affidavit outlines the investigation by the FBI and was filed to obtain the search warrants that allowed the raid on Monday at the Knoxville company.

The affidavit stated that the FBI's investigation was into a potential "conspiracy and scheme to defraud...to deceptively withhold diesel fuel price rebates and discounts from Pilot customers ... without the knowledge or approval of the customer, for the dual purposes of increasing the profitability of Pilot and increasing the diesel sales commissions of the Pilot employees..."

The employees, according to federal officials, were deliberately charging some customers a higher price than what was contractually agreed upon. The FBI said in its affidavit that one of its confidential sources within the company said the rebate, or discount, fraud was discussed in sales meetings where Haslam and company President Mark Hazelwood were present.

Cathy Giesick, a former regional sales manager for Pilot, told federal investigators that she was "encouraged to participate in this fraudulent conduct," according to the affidavit. She said she eventually left the company because the illegal behavior made her uncomfortable. The affidavit also stated at least one company had complained to Pilot that it had been shortchanged in diesel rebates.

FBI releases photos, video of Boston bombing suspects

Investigators have released images of two men who were at the sites where twin bombs were detonated at the Boston Marathon.

The FBI is asking for the public's help in identifying the men.  A web site has been set up for tips: https://bostonmarathontips.fbi.gov/

Anybody with information is asked to call 1-800-CALL-FBI.

The official said investigators want to question the men in the bombings - which killed three and injured 176 near the finish line of the Marathon Monday afternoon. The official cautioned that it is unclear whether they are suspects or merely witnesses.

Photos: Boston Marathon attack suspects

At one of the bomb sites, several law enforcement officials told USA TODAY, surveillance video shows a man putting down a bag. The bag appears to be similar to the black nylon pack described earlier as possibly used to carry the explosive devices, the officials said.

The blasts killed 8-year-old Martin Richard of Dorchester, 29-year-old Krystle Campbell of Medford, and Lu Lingzi, a 23-year-old Boston University graduate student from China.

At a service for victims in Boston Thursday, President Barack Obama vowed the attackers would be caught and prosecuted. "Yes, we will find you -- and, yes, you will face justice," Obama said.

In Washington, Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday that the "full resources'' of the Justice Department were being deployed in the investigation and to guard against any future attacks.

Holder, the nation's top law enforcement officer, told a Congressional committee Thursday that the "individual or group that carried out this heinous act'' would be held accountable... "by any means available to us"

Holder's comments came after Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a House panel that the responsibility for the attack has yet to be linked to individuals, international or domestic terror organizations.

"We don't know,'' Napolitano told a congressional panel, as investigators in Boston continue to pursue a number of promising leads.

Authorities continue working to identify individuals at both sites as well as a number of other people in video and photographs near the explosions.

More than 50 people remain hospitalized, with 7 listed in critical condition, down from 14 Wednesday. They include a 10-year-old boy at Boston Children's Hospital whose leg was amputated and a nine-year-old girl with a leg injury. Brigham and Women's Hospital had four people in critical condition and Boston Medical Center had one. At Tufts Medical Center, five bombing victims remain under care, but none are listed as critical.

Meanwhile, families of a newlywed couple who both suffered a leg amputation below the knee are thanking supporters for an outpouring of donations.

The families of Patrick and Jessica Downes said Thursday that the generosity from friends and strangers has restored their faith in humanity. Over 4,400 people have donated more than $246,000 to the couple through GiveForward.com.

The families say they don't want the couple to worry about paying for prosthetics and modifications to their home during the recovery process.

Thirty-year-old Patrick and 32-year-old Jessica are in stable condition and recovering from surgery. They were married in Boston in August. Jessica is a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, one of several area hospitals treating bomb victims.

Akron: 4 bodies found inside house

AKRON -- Akron police are on the scene after four bodies were found in the basement of a home.

The discovery came at a home on Kimlyn Circle off Independence Avenue in eastern Akron.

According to police, there were multiple shots fired in the shooting that killed two women and two men, all believed to be in their early twenties.

Police were called to the house at 2:39 p.m. The 911 call came from a neighbor, after another person discovered the bodies inside the apartment on the basement level.

Police say they have no suspects or any theories of the motive for the shootings.

While police have not confirmed the identities of the victims, family members of one of the men killed say the apartment belongs to his sister, who was not home at the time.

April Roberts Gilbert says police told her that her son, 24-year-old Ronald Roberts, is among the victims.

"My son would not have hurt anyone. My son would have gave the shirt off his back. Whoever did this needs to be found," said the mother.

Neighbors recall seeing Roberts early Thursday morning, taking out the trash.  However, no one reported hearing any gun shots later in the day.

Investigators are hoping surveillance video, possibly from a nearby building or street, may have captured a clue.

"At least for the victims and families that we gather enough information to find out who's responsible for this," said Lt. Rick Edwards, of the Akron Police Department.

Autopsies are scheduled for Friday morning, at which time official identifications of the bodies will be made.

The home is located near Chapel Hill Mall.

Keep it here for additional details as they become available.

Aliza Sherman's mother: "I want an answer"

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 17 April 2013 | 10.49

CLEVELAND -- Loved ones are devestated and scared three weeks since the mysterious murder of Aliza Sherman.

Her family and friends have reached out to Channel 3 News for help as the days pass and there are no answers. They say they're growing more discouraged and desperate for justice.

Her loving memory in the minds of her four children seems so far from her brutal death.

Sherman was stabbed 11 times in the head, back, neck and right arm outside of her divorce attorney's office in downtown Cleveland on March 24, a Sunday afternoon.

Cleveland Police say they have made no arrests and have no suspects.

Her mother, Doris Czinn, herself a Holocaust survivor, asked us to share a video plea.

"I am the mother of Aliza Sherman," said Czinn in a taped statement. "I want to know what the chief of police and the mayor is doing about finding my daughter's killer. I want an answer."

Cleveland police are saying nothing. On Tuesday, Chief Michael McGrath told us that detectives have nothing new that can be released to the public.

A spokesperson for the department clarified there was no image of Sherman's killer seen on surveillance video known to have captured the attack.

The investigation is still open.

Cuyahoga County Crime Stoppers have received only a handful of tips since announcing a $25,000 reward, funded by friends and family.

If you have any information that might be helpful, you can share it anonymously with Crime Stoppers online or by calling 216-252-7463.

Friends say the Cleveland Clinic infertility nurse had no enemies.

Her two-year divorce proceedings were the only struggle in an otherwise happy life. She was killed just two days before the trial was scheduled to begin.

Now her children and close friends tell Channel 3 News they fear for their own safety. They say nothing will help until her killer is caught.

Pressure cooker bombs suspected in Boston blast

BOSTON -- Federal agents zeroed in Tuesday on how the Boston Marathon bombing was carried out -- with kitchen pressure cookers packed with explosives, nails and other lethal shrapnel - but said they still didn't know who did it and why.

An intelligence bulletin issued to law enforcement and released late Tuesday included a picture of a mangled pressure cooker and a torn black bag the FBI said were part of a bomb.

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies repeatedly pleaded for members of the public to come forward with photos, videos or anything suspicious they might have seen or heard.

"The range of suspects and motives remains wide open," Richard DesLauriers, FBI agent in charge in Boston, said at a news conference. He vowed to "go to the ends of the Earth to identify the subject or subjects who are responsible for this despicable crime."

President Barack Obama branded the attack an act of terrorism but said officials don't know "whether it was planned and executed by a terrorist organization, foreign or domestic, or was the act of a malevolent individual."

Scores of victims remained in hospitals, many with grievous injuries, a day after the twin explosions near the marathon's finish line killed three people, wounded more than 170 and reawakened fears of terrorism. A 9-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy were among 17 victims listed in critical condition.

Heightening jitters in Washington, where security already had been tightened after the bombing, a letter addressed to a senator and poisoned with ricin or a similarly toxic substance was intercepted at a mail facility outside the capital, lawmakers said.

There was no immediate indication the episode was related to the Boston attack. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the letter was sent to Republican Sen. Roger Wicker, of Mississippi.

Officials found that the bombs in Boston consisted of explosives put in ordinary 1.6-gallon pressure cookers, one with shards of metal and ball bearings, the other with nails, according to a person close to the investigation who spoke on condition of anonymity because the probe was still going on. The bombs were stuffed into black duffel bags and left on the ground, the person said.

DesLauriers confirmed that investigators had found pieces of black nylon from a bag or backpack and fragments of BBs and nails, possibly contained in a pressure cooker. He said the items were sent to the FBI laboratory at Quantico, Va., for analysis.

The FBI said it is looking at what Boston television station WHDH said are photos sent by a viewer that show the scene right before and after the bombs went off. The photo shows something next to a mailbox that appears to be a bag, but it's unclear what the significance is.

"We're taking a look at hundreds of photos, and that's one of them," FBI spokesman Jason Pack said.

Investigators said they haven't determined what was used to set off the explosives.

Pressure cooker explosives have been used in international terrorism and have been recommended for lone-wolf operatives by al-Qaida's branch in Yemen.

But information on how to make the bombs is readily found online, and U.S. officials said Americans should not rush to judgment in linking the attack to overseas terrorists.

DesLauriers said there had been no claim of responsibility for the attack.

He urged people to come forward with anything suspicious, such as hearing someone express an interest in explosives or a desire to attack the marathon, seeing someone carrying a dark heavy bag at the race or hearing mysterious explosions recently.

"Someone knows who did this," the FBI agent said.

The bombs exploded 10 or more seconds apart, tearing off victims' limbs and spattering streets with blood, instantly turning the festive race into a hellish scene of confusion, horror and heroics.

The blasts killed 8-year-old Martin Richard, of Boston, 29-year-old Krystle Campbell, of Medford, and a third victim, identified only as a graduate student at Boston University.

Doctors who treated the wounded corroborated reports that the bombs were packed with shrapnel intended to cause mayhem.

"We've removed BBs, and we've removed nails from kids. One of the sickest things for me was just to see nails sticking out of a little girl's body," said Dr. David Mooney, director of the trauma center at Boston Children's Hospital.

At Massachusetts General Hospital, all four amputations performed there were above the knee, with no hope of saving more of the legs, said Dr. George Velmahos, chief of trauma surgery.

"It wasn't a hard decision to make," he said. "We just completed the ugly job that the bomb did."

Obama plans to visit Boston on Thursday to attend an interfaith service in honor of the victims. He has traveled four times to cities reeling from mass violence, most recently in December after the schoolhouse shooting in Newtown, Conn.

In the wake of the attack, security was stepped up around the White House and across the country. Police massed at federal buildings and transit centers in the nation's capital, critical response teams deployed in New York City and security officers with bomb-sniffing dogs spread through Chicago's Union Station.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said that the stepped-up security was a precaution and that there was no evidence the bombings were part of a wider plot.

Pressure cooker explosives have been used in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan, according to a July 2010 intelligence report by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. One of the three devices used in the May 2010 Times Square attempted bombing was a pressure cooker, the report said.

"Placed carefully, such devices provide little or no indication of an impending attack," the report said.

The Pakistani Taliban, which claimed responsibility for the 2010 attempt in Times Square, has denied any part in the Boston Marathon attack.

Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen gave a detailed description of how to make a bomb using a pressure cooker in a 2010 issue of Inspire, its English-language online publication aimed at would-be terrorists acting alone.

In a chapter titled "Make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom," it says "the pressurized cooker is the most effective method" for making a simple bomb, and it provides directions.

The tightly sealed pot makes easier-to-obtain but weaker explosives faster and stronger, amplifying the blast and the carnage.

Naser Jason Abdo, a former U.S. soldier, was sentenced to life in prison last year after being convicted of planning to use a pair of bombs made from pressure cookers in an attack on a Texas restaurant frequented by soldiers from Fort Hood. He was found with the Inspire article.

Investigators in the Boston bombing also are combing surveillance tapes from businesses around the finish line and asking travelers at Logan Airport to share any photos or video that might help.

"This is probably one of the most photographed areas in the country yesterday," said Boston police Commissioner Edward Davis. He said two security sweeps of the marathon route had been conducted before the bombing.

Boston police and firefighter unions announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to arrests.

Cleveland: Council delays redistricting map votes

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 16 April 2013 | 10.49

CLEVELAND -- The drama over Cleveland City Council redistricting continues.

On Monday night, Council did not take an expected vote on a final version of the city's redistricting ward map.

Council President Martin Sweeney decided tha complicated legislation and the last-minute map changes required more time for members to review them.

Some groups still upset by the last-minute changes -- Hispanic leaders still concerned that Ward 14 does not have a high enough Hispanic population to elect an Hispanic council member.

And some Tremont residents are upset with how their neighborhood is split into different wards.

Council plans on voting at the April 22 meeting.

Council needs to meet a May 6 deadline for the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

Former medic: "more like Baghdad and Bombay than Boston"

BOSTON -- A former Army medic says the scene at today's Boston Marathon was "more like Baghdad and Bombay than Boston."

Bruce Mendelsohn was attending a post-race party in an office building just above the blast site when an explosion knocked him to the floor.

He rushed outside and found blood, glass and debris everywhere, and began applying pressure to what he calls "gruesome" wounds.

One of the runners describes a gruesome scene inside a medical tent near the finish line, as bombing victims were brought in "with no limbs." He says he tried to shield his children's eyes, but says "they saw a lot."

Three people were killed and more than 140 injured, including 17 critically, when two bombs exploded almost simultaneously about 100 yards apart.

There's no word on who may have carried out the attack or why.

Cleveland Marathon steps up its security

CLEVELAND -- Today Boston reminded us how quickly things can change. Runners went from crossing the finish line to running for their lives in a split second.

Cleveland Marathon executive director Jack Staph says they'll step up security on the day of the race, but especially on the days leading up to it.

In light of what happened Monday in Boston, he's called a meeting Tuesday with race organizers to discuss measures they can take.

"I feel we have a fairly good protocol for security...we'll talk to other races that will occur between now and our race, namely Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, and see what they're doing," Staph said.

Staph went on to say that he's confident the city will show their support for the annual race, in spite of what happened today.

Officials say the officer brought target posters depicting an image of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old who was shot to death by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida last year.

Later, Sergeant Ron King reportedly apologized to the Martin family in a YouTube video and said he created the poster as a way of getting officers to think before firing too quickly.
