Berea -- After not having a second round selection the Browns went defense with their only pick on Friday night.
With the 68th overall pick in the 3rd-round of the NFL Draft the Browns selected Leon McFadden, a cornerback out of San Diego St.
The 22 year-old is a three-time all-Mountain West Conference first-team selection. At 5-10, 193lbs with just average speed he is considered by many to be a talented all-around athlete that could make an immediate impact in the NFL.
McFadden was recruited as a wide receiver but moved to cornerback where he made 188 career tackles, 3 sacks, 47 pass breakups and 8 interceptions while starting 45 of the 51 games in which he played in college.
Many Cleveland fans were disappointed when the Browns passed on CB Dee Milliner in the first round, because the Browns have such a need at cornerback. With the pick of McFadden they have addressed the position. The Inglewood, California native will have to work on his consistency and technique as a tackler at the next level.
Browns General Manager Michael Lombardi said McFadden has starting ability but it will be up to the coaches. He can play inside and outside. McFadden said he was surprised the Browns drafted him because he did not have much contact with the team before the draft. Lombardi said the Browns didn't consider a Quarterback with their 3rd-round pick because they are more focused on trying to improve their secondary, defensive-line and offensive line. The Browns have not selected an offensive lineman yet, so that could be a hint of what is to come tomorrow.
