WKYC Web StaffNearly 400,000 Ohioans face a tough reality this holiday season -- being unemployed.
Turns out, December is a good time of year to ramp up a job search, says career consultant Robin Raybuck.
"[A lot] of hiring gets done in December. Sometimes there's budgets that need to be filled by the end of the year," she says.
According to Raybuck, job seekers fall prey to common myths about looking for a job during the holidays. Some believe it's a good time to take a break from looking for a job.
"January is essentially the biggest hiring month of the year, and if you put your job search on hold in December, you're going to be back to square one in January, when you want to be ready for interviews," she says.
Raybuck says it's important to make the most of this month. She suggests:
- Find new channels of networking such as job group events.
- Use holiday parties to find out about possible job leads. Making contact is the first step -- be sure to follow up.
- Set up meetings with employers during the holidays as they are less likely to be on the road.
- Exercise to manage stress and boost your mood.
- Consider volunteering to meet new people and do good in the community.
- Reflect on what's going well in your life and where you see yourself in the future.
Above all, stay positive.
"Believe in yourself, and you will be back in a new job that is probably going to be a better job," says Raybuck.
