Medina: Facebook support for Sandy Hook gunman leads to arrest

MEDINA -- As the nation continues to mourn last week's shooting tragedy in Connecticut, a local man finds himself in trouble with the law all over a post on Facebook.

Joseph Resovsky, 20, says he wanted to make a point with this Facebook post but it could cost him a $1,000 fine and 30 days in jail.

This case promises to test the limits of free speech and answer the question: At what point do hurtful words become criminal?

Joe Resovsky is now rethinking last Saturday's lunchtime Facebook post. He wrote, "I'm so happy somebody shot up all those little (expletive). Viva la School Shootings!!!!"

So what did he mean by his poison post? WKYC confronted Resovsky to find out.

What in the world were you thinking?

"I don't know. Honestly, like I say, mainly to prove a point," Resovsky said.

Do you own a gun?

"Ah, no."

Resovsky was asked why he hesitated answering the question.

"I used to own one. I don't anymore," Resovsky said.

Had you entertained thoughts of such things or violence?

"No."

Anything in your past?

"No. I'm not a violent person," Resovsky said.

Resovsky says he was testing the theory that, no matter how outlandish the post, it would soon be forgotten.

It had the opposite affect.

Medina police were inundated with complaint calls and emails. They charged him with inducing panic.

"This is the modern day equivalent of yelling fire in a movie theater. He just does it through the internet," Medina Police Lt. Dave BirkBichler said.

Many communities across the country went on high alert after the Sandy Hook school massacre.

Concerned about copycats, Medina has reassigned a half dozen police officers to its elementary and middle schools. They've been guarding the campuses since Monday and will remain until the Christmas break.

Police say Resovsky made no direct threat but the timing and the fear in the community pushes the comment to a criminal level.

Resovsky says he apologized to the people who responded to his post.

The reaction was such that he deleted his Facebook page altogether.
