Police: Women outside just twice in 10 years; Castro charged

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 09 Mei 2013 | 10.49

Ariel Castro is one of three brothers arrested in the case.

CLEVELAND --   Police have announced charges in the disappearance of three Cleveland women and revealed the three were kept inside a home for nearly 10 years straight.

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight escaped the home on Seymour Avenue on May 6.  Police say based on interviews the three only recall being allowed outside twice--for a short time--during their entire time in captivity.

In those two instances, police say the women were forced to wear disguises and only were taken from the house into the garage.  They never left the property.

Police say Ariel Castro has been charged in the women's disappearances.

Castro has been charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. Investigators say the kidnapping charges are for Amanda, her daughter, Gina, and Michelle.  The rape charges involve Amanda, Gina and Michelle.

He's due in court tomorrow for an initial court appearance.

Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba said a paternity test on Castro was being done to establish who fathered the now 6-year-old child of captive Amanda Berry.

His brothers Pedro and Onil Castro are not being charged in connection with the women's cases.  Police say they found no evidence linking them to the women or that they had any knowledge of what was going on.  Police say most of their investigation is based on interviews with Amanda, Gina and Michelle.

They are being held on outstanding warrants and are due in court tomorrow on those warrants.

Police say the three women knew the others were in the house but were not kept in the same location.

Police say ropes and chains were among evidence take from the house on Seymour Avenue.  A councilman says the three women were subjected to prolonged sexual and psychological abuse.

Cleveland: Investigators check Castro/DeJesus link

CLEVELAND -- Is it more than a coincidence that the last person to see Gina DeJesus before she vanished is a daughter of the suspect whose house she was found in?

Investigators are checking that connection to see if perhaps it gave Ariel Castro the opportunity to abduct Gina DeJesus.

An old episode of "America's Most Wanted" show's Arlene Castro being interviewed, describing her parting moments with Gina before she disappeared.

Gina gave Arlene money for a phone call, then had to walk home instead of taking a bus because she lacked the fare. Investigators wonder if she knew and was comfortable around Ariel Castro.

Many in the neighborhood where three women apparently were held in Castro's house are buzzing about the connection, thinking it's more than happenstance.

Castro's Uncle Julio watched a video of the segment, telling WKYC's Tom Beres, "It's very incredible...I didn't know the girls knew each other..It makes you think."

Former neighbor Ernest Bargain watched the video and said, "That's deep. I wonder how many people knew."

Canton: Timken crane accident kills 2

CANTON -- The Perry Township fire department and Stark County Coroner's Office responded to an industrial accident at the Timken Plant on Faircrest Street.

According to the Coroner's office, the incident happened around 12:50 p.m. and the two workers were declared dead at 1:20 p.m.

The two men, employees of Beaver Excavating, were working on a new caster construction site in the back of the plant.

They were rigging a load to be lifted off the ground when something caused the arm of the crane to malfunction and the crane collapsed, instantly killing Brian Black and Mark Tovissi.

OSHA officials have been contacted regarding the incident, according to Timken official Dan Minnich. All work on the site has been suspended until further notice.

This isn't the first time OSHA has paid a visit to Timken. This past December, the U.S. Labor Department fined Timken Co. over $170,000 after an inspection found 12 safety violations. Five of the violations were repeat offenses.

Since 2007, Timken has been cited by OSHA 27 times. Conversely, Beaver Excavating recieved a 1st place award just 2 months ago for excellence in safety.

Police: Lice-infested women went 'shopping' at Walmart

BRIMFIELD -- Police here said two women from Akron went on a late-night "shoplifting" trip to Walmart.

Police said that, as the items in one cart were being scanned and bagged, one of the women pushed a full cart of merchandise out of the store.

Then the other woman ran out after her. Police say a witness snapped some pictures on his smart phone, "which is always great when the suspects give us the old 'that wasn't me' speech," Police Chief Oliver said.

The women drove off but police tracked them to their home in Akron, and in conjunction with Akron police, found over $1,300 worth of stolen merchandise.

But there was another problem, police said. The women's house was infested with bed bugs and lice, "the double whammy of itchy," Oliver said.

Officers had to be decontaminated and the evidence was treated and triple-bagged. Police also decontaminated the women before they were given their orange jumpsuits.

Stark County: Adult daycare at risk with sequester cuts

STARK COUNTY -- Trinity United Church of Christ is where there's an adult daycare inside.

It helps seniors and those with disabilities but now, because of Washington cuts, some are being told they can't come here.

Joyce French loves meeting friends at the J.R. Coleman adult daycare center. They exercise, play games and keep busy. Joyce has trouble seeing because of macular degeneration but has no trouble smiling.

Joyce used to come five days a week. Now it's down to two, half-days because of that bad word out of Washington -- sequester.

Sequester means they have to cut services.

Back in March, Executive Director Tom Thompson found out federal funding was being cut, a loss of $26,000 for the rest of the year.

When federal money is in place, seniors spend less than $1,000 a month to come here. Now some may have to go to a nursing home at $6,000 a month. Thompson feels that's unfair.

Cleveland: Church roof collapses in fire

CLEVELAND -- Nearly 70 firefighters responded to a multiple alarm blaze involving a church, thrift store and restaurant on Kinsman Road Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Cleveland Fire Department says the fire began inside St. Jude Church of God in Christ at East 142nd Street and Kinsman Road.

The church's pastor and another minister were praying inside the building just before the fire broke out.

"We heard something said boom," explained Bishop Jessie Brown.  "The ceiling then was on fire and we got out in time before everything really went to chaos."

Investigators are still trying to determine the source of the blaze, however Cleveland Fire Department Lt. Larry Gray says there is reason to believe it could be suspicious.

"It's a blessing that nobody in the community got hurt and everybody else got out safe from each one of the buildings," said Tyrone Willis, an associate minister with St. Jude.

Haslam's Pilot Flying J faces long investigation

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 01 Mei 2013 | 10.49

KNOXVILLE -- It could be months before Pilot Flying J employees or Jimmy Haslam face indictments in an alleged rebate fraud scheme.

But that doesn't mean they aren't already preparing their defense.

WKYC's Sara Shookman is in Knoxville.

She says that, for most people, Pilot Flying J is not just a truck stop and Jimmy Haslam isn't the only name they know inside these buildings.

Four class-action lawsuits in four states are already filed. So the next piece of the puzzle is fallout for those who work there.

Knoxville criminal defense attorney Dennis Francis calls it "getting to be first on the bus."

If several, maybe dozens of Pilot employees believe they could be facing charges, they might be the first to line up to make a deal with federal attorneys to bolster the government's case.

It's not clear if Pilot Flying J could foot the bill for lawyers for lower level employees. What's likely is defense attorneys are meeting to figure out a common scheme and sign joint defense agreements to prevent these possible defendants from implicating each other.

What is clear is that the government isn't likely to spend two years on an investigation to this extent and not plan to file charges.

The U.S. Attorney's Office here in Knoxville told WKYC today that the investigation is ongoing.

They seized documents, hard drives, entire images of these computers -- quite a bit of information to wade through.

Aubrey Harwell, Jimmy Haslam's attorney, says they know this can take quite a long time.

McGrath says those being disciplined were not involved in the communications during the chase that night.  He characaterized the twelve facing disciplined as failing to provide leadership.

McGrath says all 12 showed a lack of leadership during the 19-mile chase in November that went through downtown Cleveland and other neighborhoods before ending in gunfire that killed teh driver Timothy Russell and his passenger Malissa Williams.

Both had cocaine in their systems but neither was armed. An internal police review showed that officers and supervisors broke policies.

McGrath says a review is continuing into whether any officers will be disciplined. The county prosecutor is conducting a separate grand jury investigation into possible criminal wrongdoing.

The announcement at a Tuesday news conference comes a week after the city reviewed its internal investigation into the chase and shooting.

The city's review focused solely on whether departmental procedures and rules were followed. It did not touch on the use of deadly force.

The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Office is leading the criminal review into the chase and shooting and that investigationg is still ongoing.

The city will next review whether any patrol officers failed to follow department procedure and whether any will be disciplined.

The Nov. 29 chase left Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams dead.  The two died after a lengthy chase involving dozens of police vehicles.  The chase ended in a shootout during which officers fired 137 shots.
