CANTON -- The Perry Township fire department and Stark County Coroner's Office responded to an industrial accident at the Timken Plant on Faircrest Street.
According to the Coroner's office, the incident happened around 12:50 p.m. and the two workers were declared dead at 1:20 p.m.
The two men, employees of Beaver Excavating, were working on a new caster construction site in the back of the plant.
They were rigging a load to be lifted off the ground when something caused the arm of the crane to malfunction and the crane collapsed, instantly killing Brian Black and Mark Tovissi.
OSHA officials have been contacted regarding the incident, according to Timken official Dan Minnich. All work on the site has been suspended until further notice.
This isn't the first time OSHA has paid a visit to Timken. This past December, the U.S. Labor Department fined Timken Co. over $170,000 after an inspection found 12 safety violations. Five of the violations were repeat offenses.
Since 2007, Timken has been cited by OSHA 27 times. Conversely, Beaver Excavating recieved a 1st place award just 2 months ago for excellence in safety.
