GEAUGA COUNTY -- Geauga County Sheriff Dan McClelland advises drivers what to do if the snowy conditions trap you in your car.

Today's major traffic accident on Interstate 90 in Lake County is an example of the predicament of being stuck in your vehicle for hours unexpectedly.

This bitterly cold weather can also affect your car's performance. It's always a good idea to make sure you have plenty of gas in your car for the trip and then some.

We checked with McClelland for do's and don'ts for drivers to follow in that predicament. He stresses that all travel in this kind of weather requires pre-planning.

  • Drivers sould have blankets and extra-warm clothing stashed in their cars.
  • Most importantly, they should have a working cell phone as, even with no service, an older cell phone can still place a 911 call that lets dispatchers know your exact location
  • It's crucial that you remain in your car. Hypothermia, frostbite and disorientation can happen very quickly outside
  • Drivers should also conserve gasoline and their car battery by only using the heater sparingly.
  • Put on your car's flashers and make sure your tailpipe is snow-free, to avoid the dangers of carbon monoxide.

McClelland recalled one case of finding a lost driver wandering aimlessly with a winter ski mask frozen to his face.

McClelland repeated that drivers should stay in thir cars, be patient and help will arrive.
