Cleveland: City defends snow removal effort

CLEVELAND -- Snow removal efforts often  bring many commuter and resident complaints to Cleveland City Hall.

Tuesday morning's rush hour still found many snow- and slush-covered streets downtown and many commuters said their rush hour got slower and longer once they left suburban routes and got into Cleveland.

Tom Lombardi said, "It was pretty poor around East 9th Street. It was still covered like they hadn't done much."

Cassidy Skonieczny commuted from Mentor.

She said, "It took me an hour and a half to get to work. It was fine where I was coming from. I hit MLK (Martin Luther King Boulevard ) and it was not so good...I had to drive around the block at my garage downtown because it was blocked."

Public Works Director Michael Cox said, "I think we've done an excellent job."

He said downtown streets were cleared two or three times before the morning rush hour hit and blamed blowing and drifting snow for quickly recovering plowed streets with snow.

The city had convoys of police cars escorting multiple plows to clear main intersections and streets.

It strives to clear main and secondary arteries first and get to all sidestreets within 24 to 36 hours after that.

The city's had 48 truck/plows on the street around the clock.

A few commuters had praise.

Sylvia Kuchenmeister said, "I was creeping along on I-90. When I got off on East 9th Street, it was the fastest I went."

The city hopes more commuters say that in Wednesday morning's rush hour.
