Items removed from Ariel Castro's house

CLEVELAND -- As Ariel Castro begins a life sentence in prison, the effort to tear down the house where he held three women captive is moving forward.

This morning family members, lawyers, and police were on the scene of the house on Seymour Avenue to begin removing items from the house.

Under the plea agreement, some personal items will be turned over to Castro's family. The house will then be demolished.

WKYC's Kim Wheeler reports from the scene that family members found old photographs from when Castro's children were little in the house. They also took guitars and bicycles. Relatives say it's part of the healing process for them.

"It's sad and hard but it is necessary for us to move on," said Anthony Castro, Ariel Castro's son.

Castro's attorney, Craig Weintraub, told WKYC at the scene the house will be torn down Wednesday.   The space left by the house will be turned over to the community to be re-used, possibly as a park.

Castro pleaded guilty on July 26 to more than 900 counts including rape, kidnapping and aggravated murder in the abductions of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight. The three women were held captive for a decade before being rescued on May 6.

A judge sentenced Castro to life in prison plus 1,000 years. Under the plea deal, Castro signed over the house, most of its belongings and other property  to the county.

Gina DeJesus also came to the scene today, looking at the house from inside a van. She never left the van, and did not want anything from the house. This was the first time she had been back since her rescue.
