PENINSULA -- The federal government shutdown that closed the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is having a widespread ripple effect.

The town of Peninsula is surrounded by the park. Many of its 600 residents work at businesses that depend on park visitors.

Century Cycles rents bikes for $9 an hour to riders on the Towpath Trail. The stretch of trail that runs through the park is closed.

Visitors are being warned by rangers that they could get citations for using the path.

Kevin Madzia, a spokesman for Century Cycles, says the business has suffered a significant hit. He says laying off workers is a possibility.

It's the same story at Elements Gallery. It sells pottery and creations of local artists. It depends on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad to deliver customers to its door. But the railroad is also not running. Gallery business is at a standstill.

Debra Bures, the gallery's co-owner, says Congress needs to know the shutdown is hurting real people.

The shutdown comes at a particularly bad time. The fall foliage season is about to start and many of the park's 2.5 million annual visitors come during the weeks ahead.
