CLEVELAND -- Federal civil rights observers will monitor polls in Cuyahoga County during the upcoming primary election to make sure bilingual ballots are used under a 2010 agreement between the U.S. Department of Justice and the locality.
The Northeast Ohio Media Group (http://bit.ly/186orlr ) reports observers on Tuesday will record activities at the polls in Cuyahoga County, which includes Cleveland.
This is not the first time elections in that county are monitored. The media group reports the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections in 2010 agreed to offer bilingual ballots to avoid a Justice Department lawsuit under the Civil Rights Act.
The department had been pressuring the county to provide voting access for citizens educated in Puerto Rico and with limited ability in English.
