Cleveland Weather: Well west of the blizzard

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 08 Februari 2013 | 10.49

Two smaller storm systems will be merging near the East Coast tomorrow and will become one massive winter storm.

The cold component of the storm is going to come right through northern Ohio tomorrow morning.  The warm and incredibly moisture laden part of the storm will be coming from the Gulf and moving up the East Coast.

While our forecast is not easy, it is a bit "safer" than the more than 30 inches of snow and near hurricane strength wind that is expected in the very densely populated areas of New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine.

So, here in northern Ohio, clouds will continue to increase tonight.  In the pre-dawn hours (think 3 or 4 AM) we could have some scattered rain (maybe some type of icy mix in there too) move in before a larger swath of rain (which could be heavy) moves in for the morning commute.

Just after the work day really gets into full-gear, the temperatures will drop and the rain will transition to snow as a strong cold front plows through.  The snow could be heavy at times and will linger into the afternoon before tapering off in the evening.  A general 1" to 2" of snow is expected for most areas, but those farther northeast could have a little more thanks to some help from Lake Erie.

After a little lake effect lingers Friday night for the snowbelt areas, we'll be off to a gorgeous weekend.

The next storm system to come our way will be here for Monday.

Tonight: Clouds increase.  A chance for scattered rain will develop in the early morning, which may have some icy mix in areas where temperatures may flirt with freezing (but I think most everyone will have just scattered rain).  Temps will be in the 30s

Friday:  Rain likely in the morning, with a quick change to snow expected before midday. Snow could be heavy at times, with 1" to 2" accumulation possible for all areas.  Accumulations could reach up to 4" for areas east of Cleveland if the Lake gets involved.  30s falling into the 20s by afternoon

Saturday:  Partly cloudy.  Upper 20s/low 30s

Sunday:  Partly sunny skies.  Low/mid 40s

Monday:  Rain likely, tapering off in the afternoon.  Partly sunny late day.  Mid 40s early, falling into the 30s

Tuesday:  Partly sunny.  Mid 30s

Wednesday:  Mostly cloudy with snow showers.  Near 30

Thursday:  Partly cloudy.  Low 30s
