Associated PressCharles "Chip" Kelly, the reported frontrunner for the Cleveland Browns coaching job, has a long and successful college coaching career.
Kelly started coaching in 1990 at Columbia University as a secondary and special teams coach for the freshman team. The following year Kelly coached the outside linebackers and strong safeties for the varsity team.
Kelly was the running backs coach in 1992 at the University of New Hampshire. He left there for Johns Hopkins University for one season as defensive coordinator. In 1994 Kelly returned to the University of New Hampshire as the running backs coach (1994-1996) and offensive line coach (1997-1998). Kelly was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1999 and continued there until 2006).
In 2007 Kelly was hired as offensive coordinator at Oregon and led the Pac-10 in scoring (38.15 ppg) and total offense (467.54 ypg) his first year. In 2008 Kelly improved the offensive output of his team to lead the Pac -10 again. In March 2009 Oregon Head Coach Mike Bellotti was promoted to athletic director and Kelly became head coach on March 30, 2009.
In 2009 Kelly's Oregon Ducks would win an outright conference championship in his first season and a Rose Bowl visit for the first time since 1995. The Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Oregon Ducks 26-17 in the Rose Bowl. Kelly was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year.
In 2010, Oregon achieved the #1 spot on the USA Today Coaches Poll, followed by a #1 BCS ranking. Oregon won their second consecutive outright Pac-10 title with an offense that averaged 49.3 points and 537.5 yards per game during the regular season. Oregon was selected to play in the BCS National Championship Game against a Cameron Newton lead Auburn Tigers team. The Ducks lost 22-19, but despite the loss Kelly was recognized for his accomplishment. Kelly received the Eddie Robins Coach of the Year award, his second consecutive Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Walter Camp Coach of the Year and AP Coach of the Year honors.
2011 would bring similar successes including a Pac-12 championship. The Ducks defeated Wisconsin to win the Rose Bowl-Oregon's first Rose Bowl win since 1917. Following the season Kelly would get one interview for an NFL head coaching job from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He turned down the offer.
In 2012, Kelly helped lead the Ducks to a 12-1 season and a trip to the Tostitos Fiesta bowl where Oregon defeated Kansas State 35 -17. Oregon senior quarterback Collin Klein was a Heisman Trophy finalist.
