CLEVELAND -- Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine pledges an all out effort to get the facts behind the Cleveland police chase and shooting incident that has rocked the community.
"We have one mission and that is to find out what the truth is and what the facts are...We are going to take as much time as it takes do it right, but we're going to do it as quickly as we can," he said.
DeWine appeared with Mayor Frank Jackson at a Friday morning event about funding to demolish abandoned buildings.
The two did lengthy interviews about the probe.
Jackson spoke about an emotional Thursday night meeting where activists and family members claimed police should be charged with murder and claimed the shooting was racially motivated because victims Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams were black and 12 of 13 officers firing were white.
"I never run from the people. They needed to talk to me and we needed to talk to them...We heard it. The community needed to say it and we listened to it," Jackson said.
DeWine said a record 18 BCI agents plus lab technicians are on the case and more will be assigned if needed.
DeWine's report will go to new Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty who will make the call on any possible criminal charges.
Police and the City of Cleveland are focusing on whether officers followed regulations about chases and use of deadly force.
Jackson said, "Once we determine that, we will take appropriate action with each of the police officers on whether there is culpability or not."
