Three women held by monster Ariel Castro for years and years saw unusually swift justice just 87 days after they escaped from his Seymour Avenue house of horrors in Cleveland.
It's hard to believe that Ariel Castro, who held three women against their will for 11, 10 and 9 years, respectively, is already on his way to prison for the rest of his life, less than three months after the women escaped from his house.
Most heinous crimes are discovered, a search is made for the suspect or suspects, an arrest is made, arraignments and pre-trials are held, then a trial, and then the verdict is rendered. This usually takes months and months, sometimes years and years.
It's almost unfathomable that -- from start to finish -- the kidnapping/rape/torture of the three women was discovered, an arrest was made, the suspect was indicted on 977 charges, and he reaches a plea deal of guilty to 937 of the charges, and is sent away to prison for life PLUS 1,000 years -- all in less than 90 days.
The swiftness in no way diminishes their previous suffering and it certainly won't give them back the years that they lost but it does help bring a quick end to an horrific -- almost unbelievable -- story.
On May 6, three, long-missing Cleveland woman emerged from the Seymour Avenue house into the arms of police. Amanda Berry, Georgina "Gina" DeJesus, and Michelle Knight were rescued after Berry managed to kick open part of the front door and scream for help.
Knight had disappeared in Cleveland in April 2002 at age 21, Berry in 2003 at age 16, and DeJesus in 2004 at age 14. During that time, their captor also fathered a child by Berry, a girl who is now 6 years old.
Their loved ones held frequent vigils, never giving up hope that some day, sometime, they would be found.
Who knew that they weren't taken out-of-state as part of a sex-trafficking ring but were being keep in a boarded up house several blocks from where they lived?
Who could imagine that -- in these modern times -- a man would chain them up, bind them with duct tape, repeatedly rape them -- all the while working as a bus driver for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and often times playing in a band?
It's almost too much to comprehend, the days and weeks and months and years they spent locked up in that house. Equally incomprehensible is how quickly justice was meted out.
Think back to April of 2002. What were you doing?
Imagine that you were going about your day and were whisked off the street by a man you barely knew and kept locked up until three months ago? What would you have missed?
It took only four and a half hours on Thursday to bring it all to an end. Let us now forget about Ariel Castro forever and say a prayer for the three women and the child who will start their lives over again.
Ariel Castro does not deserve one more minute of their time nor our time.
