AKRON -- Alex Abreu, the starting point guard for the Zips, has been released from jail.
Abreu and his co-defendant left the Summit County Jail late Friday afternoon.
Earlier Friday morning, Abreu faced a judge via video arraignment on drug charges. The judge set a $5,000 bond for Abreu.
The 21-year-old was arrested Thursday and charged with possession and trafficking in marijuana after police say he allegedly accepted a package containing five pounds of marijuana.
Abreu has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Zips have indefinitely suspended Abreu pending the outcome of the police investigation.
Akron (24-5, 14-1) secured its second consecutive Mid-American Conference title when it beat Miami of Ohio 72-58 on Tuesday night. The Zips host Kent State on Friday night in their final regular-season game.
Abreu, who is from Puerto Rico, has been the team's floor leader during a memorable season. The Zips recently won 19 straight games and will be the No. 1 seed in next week's Mid-American Conference tournament. The MAC tourney winner receives the league's automatic NCAA bid.
Abreu is averaging 10.3 points and six assists per game. The 5-foot-10 junior also shoots 81 percent from the foul line.
