AKRON -- The absence of the University of Akron's star point guard was felt on the court and in the stands at James A. Rhodes arena.
The final score against rival Kent State: Zips - 64, Golden Flashes - 68.
21-year-old Alex Abreu was arrested by Akron Police on Thursday.
Police charged Abreu and another man with trafficking and possession of marijuana.
Abreu posted bond Friday evening but is suspended from the basketball team.
Fans say his absence was noticed in the final game of the regular season.
"I thought we were definitely going to take a hit," University of Akron student Evan Gannon says. "Losing Abreu was a big loss, but I think the Zips can pull together. We're a pretty good team."
Alums Kathy and Kurt Davis are disappointed with Abreu and what it could mean for the team's morale.
"I was shocked, first of all. I can not believe that someone with that much opportunity would screw it up for himself and the team going into the post-season," Kathy Davis said.
Abreu has a court appearance on March 22.
Before that date, the Zips will have to win the MAC Championship next week in Cleveland if they hope for a bid to the NCAA tournament.
