WKYC Web StaffWILLOUGHBY HILLS, Ohio -- Willoughby and Willoughby Hills police are investigating a car crash, robbery and stabbing that all appear to be connected.
The suspect attempted to rob a CVS/Pharmacy at Som Center and Ridge roads in Willoughby. He also stabbed the store clerk in the hand.
At approximately 2 a.m. Thursday, the Willoughby Police Department received a call from a female cashier at the CVS Pharmacy that a man had attacked her with a knife and ran off when she screamed.
She said she had suffered a cut to her hand but was not seriously injured. Co-workers followed the man out of the store and were able to advise dispatch that he left in a Ford Escort heading eastbound on Maplegrove Road towards Willoughby Hills.
The Willoughby Hills Police Department spotted the suspect vehicle southbound on River Road traveling at 70-80 mph and initiated a traffic stop.
The suspect vehicle, a 1998 Ford Escort, tried to drive away and ultimately crashed. The crash occurred on River Road near the Gates Mills border.
The driver, later identified as Albert D. Rose, 57, of Cleveland, was ejected from his vehicle. Rose was taken to Hillcrest Hospital for injuries suffered from the crash.
A knife and clothing similar to that worn during the robbery was recovered from Rose. Officers speaking with the cashier and reviewing surveillance video learned that Rose entered the store and waved to the cashier.
Rose then selected cough syrup from the pharmacy department. Rose proceeded to the checkout area and placed the cough syrup on the counter.
According to the cashier, Rose mumbled something to her as she began ringing up the sale. When she asked him what he said, Rose pulled out a knife and tried to grab her collar.
The cashier screamed and was knocked down.
The cashier, a 21-year-old, Willoughby woman, suffered a small cut to her hand while attempting to pull away from the suspect.
She was treated by the Willoughby Fire Department and released on scene.
Albert Rose is facing charges of aggravated robbery, a felony of the first degree, and felonious assault, a felony of the second degree.
Warrants for his arrest have been issued and will be served when he is medically clear.
