Parma: Betty Sutton celebrates her campaign

PARMA -- Representative Betty Sutton says she's here to celebrate a campaign, not just to hope for a win.

But that doesn't dispel any anxiousness for dozens of supporters waiting for final numbers in the race for Ohio's newly created 16th Congressional District.

Voters and volunteers are gathered at the Sheet Metal Workers Hall in Parma. They're socializing, listening to upbeat music, enjoying wings and punch and throwing out some good cheers when winning numbers for Sutton, President Barack Obama, and other Democrats flash on the big screens.

Incumbent Sutton faces Representative Jim Renacci, also an incumbent. New district lines mean 80 percent of the area is new to her, while only about half is new to Renacci.

Ohio's 16th Congressional District includes Wayne County and parts of Portage, Summit, Stark, Medina and Cuyahoga counties.

Sutton has served three terms in the House. Renacci is in his freshman term.

Despite this 16th Congressional District race being one of the most competitive and some might say even nasty this election, Sutton called the campaign an amazing effort. "I feel proud of the campaign that we have run," she said, in an interview with WKYC's Sara Shookman.

"The numbers, even though it is early in the evening, we don't know how that will ultimately bare out, but the truth is we've already won a winning campaign because people here have given their heart and their soul," said Sutton.

"The deck was a little stacked against us, but you know what, we're tough in Ohio. We don't give up, and that's more than just a slogan, that's who we are," said Sutton.

"And so I feel, as I said, good going into the night, but it has been such a privilege, a privilege to run, a privilege to serve."

When asked about attack ads in this red hot race, Sutton said she is as frustrated as she feels voters are about that.

"People were subjected to a lot of outside money coming into this state," she said.

Sutton pointed out her campaign chose to run two positive ads, and said she hopes that decision will pay off tonight.

Even if this race doesn't go her way, Sutton says jobs need to the priority for our leaders.

"I hope that no matter what the results are tonight, we have to work on getting people back to work, strengthening our economy, and we have to find a way to do that. And that's one thing that doesn't change regardless of where the lines fall or who is elected and what initial happens to be after their name, D or R."

Sutton spent Tuesday campaigning in Summit, Stark and Cuyahoga counties after voting in her precinct in Copley Township.
