Akron: Boil alert issued after water main break

AKRON -- Akron police, fire officials and dive team members responded to a major water main break in the area of North Valley and West Market Streets.

Fire officials told Channel 3 News that the water has caused the foundations in some of the houses in the area to collapse. One home was completely destroyed.

The high levels of water forced rescue crews to evacuate people from their homes.  The Red Cross is helping those families who are currently without a place to sleep.

Because of the water main break there is a boil alert in effect until further notice for West Akron residents who have experienced low water pressure. There is also a precautionary boil alert for people living in Fairlawn and Copley who are experiencing low water pressure.  It is advised you boil you water for two minutes.

Constructions crews are expected in the area Friday morning to survey the damage.

Medina: Residents protest before school board meeting

MEDINA, Ohio -- Residents in the Medina School District protested outside Medina High School 30 minutes before today's 5 p.m. school board meeting.

There is talk that the board may vote to take the proposed school tax levy off the May 7 ballot, despite the fact that early voting began April 2.

On Jan. 29, the board unanimously voted to put a 5.9 mill 10-year emergency levy on the May 7 ballot.

In November 2012, the last levy failed 11,519 (52.16 percent) against and 10,566 votes for it (47.84 percent).

It would have brought in $4.6 million over 10 years.

The money generated from the November levy would have made up for the loss of funds from the state-approximately $4.4 million-to the district.

Regarding tonight's protest, residents say they are angry about how the school board is spending their money and over benefits received by Superintendent Randy Stepp.

Medina City Schools Outrage Page on Facebook

Posted on the Facebook page, it asks residents to attend the protest "...prior to the board's outrageous approval of more than $20,000 of our tax dollars to a crisis communications firm....the school board is not getting off the hook just because they put the monster they created on paid administartive leave...."

Read Stepp's letter to Medina community

The school board put Stepp on paid administrative leave Monday and board president Dr. Karla Robinson said in a press release that "The administrative leave is part of a standard investigatory procedure and is not a disciplinary action or adverse employment action or finding of wrongdoing on his part."

State Auditor Dave Yost agreed to conduct a review after questions arose about a district fund at the Medina County Schools' Educational Service Center.

According to the school board, the findings of the probe may not be released until the end of May.
